Mounjaro side effects - positive experiences?

I'm looking to start Mounjaro in February but I am emetophobic and a little terrified of side effects. I will normally avoid any pills that list nausea / sickness as a side effect, so Mounjaro feels rather daunting.

Looking for truthful accounts of how your experience has been, how manageable side effects have been, when they were worst, any tips, etc.

I was one of the unlucky people who had quite severe side effects related to dose escalation. I was having good results on 2.5, but the second dose at 5mg triggered awful gastro side effects (oddly the first one was fine). I skipped a week, did a week at 3.75, and then back to 5mg. This time the second 5mg shot caused one bout of vomiting, and the third caused 24 hours of it.

I ended up having a month off, starting back at 2.5 and am now happily on 3.75.

I was doing the right things, eating high protein and small portions, I was just unlucky. Reading these boards suggests I’m vastly in the minority, and I’m very happy with my weight loss.

I think 99% of people who actually vomit on MJ (as opposed to feeling a little bit sick which is probably more common but still not everyone) fall into one of two groups:

  • either they find they can't eat, get very low blood sugar and that makes them sick. This happened to me twice on 7.5mg, primarily because I was travelling and busy and didn't prioritise eating. Had I been at home I would have eaten little and often (ie a few grapes, a
a bit of satsuma every so often) and that would have controlled the nausea. As a result I dropped back down to 5mg and all has been well since, or
  • they carry on eating and drinking as normal- lots of alcohol or fatty food, and then their body says "no", not least because their digestive system has slowed massively. The key is to change your diet as necessary to reduce fat, increase veg, protein and fibre and not overdo the booze.

Obviously there are a small number of people who just react badly but I do think these are probably few and far between.

This sounds very similar to metformin (which I’m already on) when you go overboard on fatty foods and alcohol. So I’m used to adapting diet in that sense anyway.

just to clarify on the emetophobia, for me it’s not just fear of being sick, it’s an obsessive anxiety and avoidance of anything that could trigger nausea.

The thought of more hypos makes me anxious, too. I routinely have them anyway and always have since I was a teen (I guess due to PCOS and insulin resistance maybe). And they are horrible! Usually in the middle of the night and I can’t move without fainting, and usually being sick.

But I guess I could worry about it forever or just try it and see how I get on. Metformin has been really helpful for levelling blood sugar and joint inflammation, if Mounjaro also aids this, it should be great for me.

I've been on MJ since late September and have lost 2st. I haven't had any bothersome side effects. The things I have noticed have been minor and well worth it for the revolution in my eating habits. I also have PCOS.

I feel like you hear the horror stories about the side effects so much more than the positive ones because people tend to seek help and advice when things go wrong. Not many people are going online to write positive and optimistic stories. And also the negative stories seem to stick more. I personally didn't have too many side effects and all the issues were manageable and I never considered stopping because of it. Hopefully if you decide to go for it, you'll have an easy ride. I was also worried about side effects bud decided to buy 1 pen and see how I go. I would have stopped if it made me really unwell but luckily it didn't happen.

Agree, even where the op was very specific about positive stories, and why, her fear of being sick, someone felt the need to post and tell her how they were sick.

I’ve just taken my twelfth dose. Never been sick, no nausea, a tiny bit of indigestion/heartburn to start with but not for weeks now. I’ve got IBS so have had a few days of diarrhoea, but that’s actually pretty normal for me, so it might be nothing to do with the medication. Main side effect has been feeling cold after each jab! I’ve lost 21 lbs.

In your shoes I'd give it a go. If you hate it, just stop, but my joint pain was gone within a few weeks, and the positive impacts on blood sugar are well documented. Any negatives have been very much outweighed by the positives for me, and not just the weight loss.

To be fair, I said both positive and truthful, so I wasn’t being very helpful there 🤣 I’d rather hear it all than only what people think I want to hear.

I think I was just hoping for an idea of the average experience, which I feel this has given me. I have lurked in the Mounjaro threads but they move so quickly it a bit information overload

I've been taking Mounjaro since the end of June last year, not had any side effects. Currently on 12.5mg and not so much as a twinge. I haven't had the strong suppression that others describe, but it quietens the food noise and allows me to reduce portion sizes without feeling hard done by.

I have diabetes too and have been on a continuous glucose monitor for a year. I haven't had a hypo since being able to replace insulin with GLP-1 injections, my Time in Range is normally between 98 and 100%. (When I was given the continuous monitor I was told that 55% in range would be an acceptable result for someone my age who had already lived with diabetes for 40 years),

I eat all my calories between 10 am and 4 pm, leaving an 18 hour gap for my guts to rest and recuperate. So if Mounjaro artificially depressed blood glucose there would be plenty of time for my glucose levels to plummet. That doesn't happen on Mounjaro, glucose levels remain steady between 5.5 and 6.5 until just before breakfast when they start to climb in anticipation. I've had zero hypos since replacing insulin with GLP-1 injections, and the only time postprandial spikes have gone above 10mmol/L is either when my body has been struggling to fight off a nasty infection, or after a packet of Welsh cakes and a jar of jam have taken advantage of me.

I’ve only had constipation at the beginning but now I’ve learnt to manage it well and have had no side effects at all since week 9. I don’t even know I’m on it most days.
I didn’t just go up the doses unless it was needed. I’m 17 weeks in and did 5 weeks on 2.5, one week on 3.75 and the rest has been on 5mg. I’ve lost 41lbs now with just a few more to go and lose steadily every week so no reason to move up the doses. I also eat clean as much as I can.
People will more likely post for advice on managing side effects , etc than otherwise so that all explain why you see lots of posts on side effects
