Worrying about long term effects

Hi, I posted a couple of days ago about whether I'd be eligible for mounjaro without any other health conditions - I'm 17st with a bmi of 37.7.
Well I've been doing lots of reading up and research from various sources (including gov website, mounjaro official website, yellow card and various research studies. I can see the massive benefits and I just cannot lose weight on my own however I'm very prone to health anxiety and so scared I'll do myself damage in the long term. I'm really worried about thyroid cancer (seems to be a notable risk), pancreatitis and other things that we won't yet know about due to lack of long term data. I'm going round in circles but just not sure if I've got any hope of losing 6 stone without some intervention. I hate how uncomfortable I feel and how big I am. The urge to sabotage and keep eating too much is strong.
Has anyone else really worried about the long term effects and overcome it?

It really helped me to see my blood test results after 2 months of MJ - my cholesterol had halved, blood sugar and blood pressure all down.

The risks are rare that you mentioned, whereas the benefits seem to be near immediate.

Thank you so much.

I've never been worried about the long term risks, so I have not been in your position and overcome it.

I have been concerned about the actual effects on my body of being long term obese and morbidly obese. Those were what pushed me into starting Mounjaro. Being obese carries many additional risks, including increasing the risk of several types of cancers.

The increased risk of thyroid cancer with Mounjaro is not proven, it's based on one clinical trial on rats (mice?) and not replicated in any of the human trials.

No, I wasn't concerned about them, was heavier than you. BMI 42 when I started. I trusted my GP and pharmacist. My mum had pancreatitis 40 years ago and she's still alive and kicking. Oh and my Polish friend has thyroid impairment from Chernobyl and is married with two kids and manages just fine.

Thanks everyone. I do have terrible health anxiety!

I worked on the basis that being overweight /obese was more of a risk to my health

Hi @flipflop76, fellow health anxiety sufferer here but also now happily on Mounjaro (and feeling pretty relaxed about it.) I found Johann Hari’s book Magic Pill really helpful in making up my mind to start as although breaks down the risks it also gives some horribly sobering facts about the risks of obesity. Good to look at it from both angles.

Orangesandlemons77 · 29/01/2025 21:32

My anxiety improved with my blood pressure, that used to stress me out (and probably made it worse) it has got better now.

IHateMozzies · 29/01/2025 22:21

You need to look at the long term effects of being overweight. Which outweigh the other?

flipflop76 · 29/01/2025 22:23

Thanks everyone, really appreciate all the responses. So helpful.

For me, no , the very real risks associated with obesity worried me more.

have you spoken to your husband then, can you afford it now?

NoCarbsForMe · 29/01/2025 22:35

I'm also too concerned OP.
Thanks for this thread.

The long term known health risks in being six stone overweight should worry you more. Have you had a health check recently? Do you know whether you are pre-diabetic? Do you know whether your blood pressure is within normal range? This is what you should be worried about, these are real risks, not hypothetical.
