Speeding up weight loss on MJ, any ideas?

Hi everyone,
I am due my fifth dose of MJ on Friday. I'm still on 2.5mg because it's quietened the food noise for me really well.

I'm on MJ because I need to lose as much weight as possible for surgery in two months time. I told my consultant that I'd likely use WLI to do it and he said 'however you can, just get the weight off', which was quite blunt but I appreciated. I am doing a VLC diet using MJ to help keep me on track.

I started at 94.2kg and need to get to a minimum of 70kgs. I lost a lot of weight in the first week, but since then it's slowed down to just over 1kg a week. I currently weigh 86kg.

Ordinarily I would be delighted at losing a kg a week, but I need to get as close to my healthy BMI as I can and only have 8 weeks left to do it!

I'm eating 800- 1000cal a day, I eat very decently (porridge brekkie, lentil and chickpea stew for lunch packed with veg and then veggie stir-fry with a protein of some kind for dinner). I drink lots of water and herbal tea. No booze, sweets or junk at all. I am also working out four times a week with an average activity level of 500-600cals.

Any ideas on how to double my loss from 1kg to 2kgs a week? It's only for two months to lose as much as possible. Then I can be a bit more sensible afterwards and keep going to goal in a slower more steady way.

Thank you!

What are your portion sizes like?

I would speak to your consultant again to make sure he really meant you to lose that fast. I wouldn't fancy going for surgery when my body was trying to cope with the effects of extreme weight loss. It doesn't bode well for your post surgery recovery.

Good luck with your weight loss and surgery

What are your portion sizes like?

I have one Quaker oats porridge sachet with water for breakfast, and a small bowl (around 300g) of the stew for lunch. Stir-fry dinner is about 400g and then the protein. Salmon is around 80g, gammon was 100g etc.

I should add that I religiously weigh and track everything, because I really want my surgery and don't want any more delays.

The clinical research trials showed greater weight loss with higher doses, which is probably not what you want to hear if you are happy to stay on 2.5mg. Those results were over many weeks though, not such a short period as you are looking at.

There's nothing else really you can do with your diet/exercise, if you are already only eating 800 - 1000 calories a day and doing exercise 4 times a week. You really want to avoid becoming malnourished and putting strain on your body in the lead up to an operation.

I do the Fast 800 Keto diet and people of your size tend to lose up to 2kg a week, certainly at first. It's similar to what you're already doing but much lower carb and higher protein. You can't really lower your calories any further so I'd be looking at macros

I’d recommend moving up the doses as per the guidelines.

JoanCollinsDiva · 28/01/2025 20:22

Well you certainly can't drop your calories any more. I'm sure that the fact you've made a good loss and shown you a serious about it will go in your favour for the surgery - and if they decide you need to lose more for the surgery to be safe then you'll have to accept that (as annoying as it may be). Starving yourself isnt the right way to go about this.

Maybe if you can tell us what your surgery is more people with experience of it can help?

I would ask your surgeon. I was put on the Newcastle Diet years ago as I needed life saving surgery, but it needs doing under medical supervision. Is it weight you need to lose, or fat? A daily sauna would lose water and hence weight.

Thank you everyone for your comments so far.
I know that regardless of what happens, I am trying my very best, and it's probably unrealistic to expect to get to 70 in 8 weeks. It's just, I don't want to miss my opportunity to get back to having a normal life because I didn't try my best.
I need to be healthy and not haggard, so it will have to be what it is. Thank you for your input everyone. I need to give my head a wobble.
