For those petrified of puking, nervous of nausea or scared silly of sulphur burps

Thought I’d start a thread for the trepidatious among us. I’m so scared of feeling nauseous or being sick. Can’t say I’m overly thrilled at the prospect of diarrhoea or sulphur burps either.
If you’ve been one of the unfortunate ones, post here what you ate (or didn’t eat!) beforehand.
I realise everyone reacts differently but I’ve convinced myself that avoidance can be true with the right food choices so let this be your guide and fingers crossed it works!
I just had a teaspoon of spicy kimchi from a local farmers market type place. I think I may have tipped the scales of favour in the opposite direction. Praying not!

I don't think it is all because of what you eat.

Sulphur burps are because of very low gut motility - food literally starts fermenting because it has been in the digestive tract for too long without being digested. Slowed gut transit is one of the effects of MJ - not side effects, but one of the main ways MJ acts to create the feeling of having eaten enough.

I eat at least 2 red peppers a day (love them, sweet, crunchy, full of vitC) which get blamed all the time, eat kimchi both shop bought and home-made, put olive oil on most things as I eat mostly raw veg and salads etc etc. Never had diarrhea, never had sulphur burps, never been sick.

The only times I have felt nauseous was trying to drink whey protein and those god-awful UPF protein shakes and bars when I was a newbie and thought I should. Apparently many people cannot digest casein and whey proteins. I personally am amazed that people drink them and then blame bolognese or cheese or cabbage or whatever else they ate.

The good news is that in most people you build up a tolerance of MJ and all side effects eventually go away. That includes that curious sensitivity to anything spicy - it really just disappears after about 4-5 months.

Interesting to hear your experience @IrisPallida . Personally I’m eating whole foods, avoiding packaged and processed foods (which I was doing before WLI anyway) and really don’t want to become a slave to the protein intake. I like eating grains and vegetables and pulses so if that means my carbs are ‘high’ and protein average then so be it, although I will be more conscious of protein as I don’t want to lose muscle.
I hear what you say about gut transit but surely that’s amplified by eating foods that are more likely to ferment while they make their (slower) journey? I also googled low sulphur diet but gave up that train of thought as pretty much everything in the history of food seems to make that list!

I’m interested in this. I no longer have young kids to run around after, and I WFH on 2 of my 4 working days, so any negative effects wouldn't be as debilitating for me as they would be for others. But I’d rather avoid ‘em!

I am not a vegetarian but I eat a mainly veggie diet. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. Very reliant on bread.

I initially want to lose about 30lbs/13.5 kgs to get my BMI down to 27.

Thing is, it is bacterial fermentation that causes the sulphur gasses, not the food type.

I mean, yes sure some veg etc contain sulphur, but why is it that this happens only when you take MJ and not every time you eat a sprout? Logically it isn't the food itself but the way food is transiting the digestive system. If it is slow enough then bacterial fermentation will occur before it is digested and eliminated. Food is actually composting like silage in our guts. It is as if we have turned into ruminants! I don't know if eating larger meals would make this more likely on MJ or would make no difference.

Hmm. Actually that makes me ponder something... There are things that can speed up transit time/gut motility. Certain types of laxatives for example. Now no-one should take actual laxatives regularly because they can really deregulate your metabolism and mess up kidneys etc. But some things are naturally a bit laxative. Sugar free chewing gum for example.

Something that I do take quite (very, actually) regularly is magnesium as I am prone to both muscle cramps and to insomnia, and magnesium is magic for both of those. I take Solgar chelated magnesium which is mostly magnesium bisglycinate and meant to not have a laxative effect. But it contains a bit of magnesium oxide as well, and all magnesium compounds veer towards the laxative end of the spectrum. So maybe that is why I don't ever get v slow gut motility and therefore sulphur burps? I wish there were two of me so that I could test this out.
