Was it the beef?

I did my first mounjaro jab last Monday evening. Love it. Had strong food suppression for 4 days then it's tapered off over the last 3 days.

Had some mild side effects, bit queasy and burpy at times. Nothing big or worrying.

This evening I've had spaghetti bolognese for dinner. Only about 50g of pasta and a spoonful of bolognese. Bit of cheese. Much smaller portion than normal and didn't feel like I'd overeaten.

I started with really bad stomach cramps about an hour after eating. Then diarrhea. Easing off now, thankfully! Bit of a stomach ache still.

I've read that certain foods can cause sickness and diarrhea but I thought spaghetti bolognese would be fairly safe?! That said, it was 20% fat mince, could that be it? Or something else in the bolognese?

Annoying thing was, it was lovely and I cooked loads so there's 3 more dinners worth of it in the freezer which I'm now scared to eat!

Oh and I'm supposed to be taking jab 2 tonight. Reckon I'll wait until tomorrow...

It could be, especially if you used a lot of oil. I remember a particularly unpleasant episode after having to eat lasagne someone served me. I think it was the fat in it. In time your tummy should settle its early days I can definitely handle some foods better now my body is used to it.

HousePlans · 27/01/2025 20:01

Ah thanks @Dairymilk99. Good to hear these things settle. Maybe I'll try a small amount again in a month or so, but not eat the leftovers in the fridge tomorrow.

Yes used a good splash of olive oil to fry the onions too. I suppose it was all just a lot richer than anything else I've eaten all week.

For me it was actually the tomato sauce that upset my stomach, if I ate it at dinner. Passata and tinned toms as well. Now (2 months in) I can eat it, but lunchtime only, and not a lot.

ThirdStorm · 27/01/2025 21:43

A bolognese would have been too rich for me in the early weeks. I had to eat very plainly ie meat/fish and veg. Fat, spice, any kind of richness didn’t agree with me initially.

EveryDayisFriday · 27/01/2025 21:49

Anything fried or oily doesn't agree with me on MJ.
I had loads of weird digestive issues at the start, they've cut down a lot now.

mashingwachine · 27/01/2025 21:55

It will be the fat, 20% is a lot of fat in mince.

JoanCollinsDiva · 27/01/2025 22:11

Try 5% mince in future and use fry light instead of glugs of oil. That's how I make mine and I haven't had any problems so far.

Interesting. Thanks all.

I did wonder about the tomatoes but I made tomato-heavy veg soup last week that I've had the last 3 lunches so I ruled tomatoes out as the culprit this evening. Interesting you noticed you could only eat it at lunch time...

Yes 20% is fatty, but cheaper than the leaner packs and I'm having to cut back somewhere to be able to afford mounjaro. 😆

Just trying to think if I've used olive oil any other time and I don't think I have. Butter in my eggs and for frying eggs. No issues with that. So may have been the oil too...

Lesson learned!

FWIW the bolognase would be no problem for me at all - the pasta would be the problem & cause what you describe!

MaloryJones · 27/01/2025 23:20

Hi OP

I saw this on Trending

I don't take any weight loss injections BUT I have had issues with beef lately too.
For all my nigh 60 years I ate beefburgers, bolognaise etc with no issues at all
Until Christmas Eve last Year that is .
I had a quarter pounder , cooked freshly and a while later threw it all up.
The same happened last night, oddly enough that was spag bol

Oh! That's interesting! It was the first time I'd had pasta since jabbing too... Hm. I'd prefer it if this was the case. I've a small portion of bolognese in the fridge for me to have today with some veg, not sure I dare risk it though!

Oh well that's really interesting MaloryJones. It's a long time since I made anything with minced beef as DS isn't a fan. But he recently had bolognese at my aunt's house and loved it so thought I'd try it here again. I'm 52 and the way my body, brain and everything else has changed since peri menopause kicked in, it wouldn't surprise me at all if my body had just taken against it.

Apparently, so I read, it's a protein or module in beef. The body immune system sees it as a threat in some cases. Intolerance can come at any age stage it seems

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 28/01/2025 08:32

20% fat beef mince is very fatty. It's what you would use for burgers so that they stick together better. Equally, as pp have said it could equally have been the pasta, or the tomatoes, or indeed the cheese.

You can drain the excess fat from the mince after browning it and before adding the other ingredients. I am not a fat-free martyr by any means but you don't need to add any additional oil at all.
