Would I be eligible?

I've been doing quite a bit of research about mounjaro and wonder whether I'd be eligible to buy it privately as I fit the bmi criteria but don't have any other related condition which it says you also have to gave. I'm 17 stone with a bmi of 37.5 but don't have high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes etc.

I never thought I'd consider it but I've been this size for over 5 years and I'm now so miserable. The urge to sabotage any weight loss attempts is so high that I need to reduce or eliminate the food noise so I can focus on healthy eating etc.

Of you have a bmi of over 30 that's enough.

Needing extra conditions is for those with a bmi of 27-30

hoarahloux · 26/01/2025 15:47

Yes, with a BMI over 30 you don't need additional conditions.

Sorry about my spelling mistakes. My fingers are so swollen these days, it's hard to type properly on my phone!

As everyone else has said, yes, you absolutely meet the criteria for a Mounjaro prescription.

ThatCoralShark · 26/01/2025 15:50

Yes, it’s 27 bmi you need health conditions, 30 if none. Go for it. It’s life changing,

Thank you so much. I'm keen but I'm currently paying for weekly counselling which I really need. I could afford it if my hubby helped me out but I'm not sure if he'll be funny about it. I feel like he'll say I just need to be more disciplined and willpower etc about diet and exercise. I might broach it with him though.

If you can somehow get the £25-30 a week it costs I’d say go for it. I’m spend8ng about £135 every 5 weeks and when you start it’s cheaper. Some people have also joined shemed and that’s cheaper but for a year- threads on here give you the low down on it . There’s very good price comparison sites that I use to switch to chase the price. I started at bmi of 40 and 6 months later I’m 4 stone down nearly and bmi of 32, but more importantly I’m so much fitter as I’m exercising much more.

ThatCoralShark · 26/01/2025 16:14

It is offset by how much less you spend on food. However I’m afraid being able to afford it, especially as yoy may need the higher doses, is the first step.

Yes, I have a high BMI and no other conditions. You only need a health related condition if your BMI is between 27 and 29. Goodness luck x

I asked my GP as I have a bmi of 40 with hypertension and have been declined for weight loss injections.

SilenceInside · 26/01/2025 18:55

@Landlubber2019 You would be able to get a private prescription though. The NHS turning people down is to do with cost and resources, not to do with the standard prescribing criteria which are the same whether via the NHS or privately.

Do some further research into obesity as a disease so you can make it clear to him you are not just fat/lazy/undisciplined. That with obesity disease will power long term is just not possible for some. It is impacting your long term health and shortening your life.

Also be aware yourself, WLI are not, for many, a short term fix. Once you have obesity it is possible you will need support from WLI longer term to ensure you do not regain.

No one is getting mounjaro from their gp for weightloss , roll out starts in the summer, but only via tier 3 weight loss clinics, there is a eight month waiting list if you get referred, then you need to engage on a one or two year program to try to lose it. GP’s are not permitted to prescribe for weight loss. It is due to cost. Even when roll out starts, gp;s will still not be able to prescribe for weight loss. They can for diabetes

Then you may be considered after completing the program with the clinic, but the roll out is very small, the nhs is saying 12 years to do everyone eligible . And first in thr queue is those in most need, who have serious conditions and been through the programs via the clinic, It is likely surgery would be offered instead.

everyone who is on it now for weight loss, buys it privately.

Definitely. I used to spend about £80 a month on deliveroo and probably an extra £40 or so on sweets and chocolates from the supermarket. So that is nearly the cost of a whole pen.
I’m finding it great in terms of meal planning because I can now actually properly plan how to cook the food I buy. Before I’d be at the mercy of my binge eating so the healthy food would go off and I’d chuck it because I’d not got round to eating it as it was a binge day and I preferred takeaway. So much easier now.
I have only been doing it for just under a week but it’s going well. I was BMI 30.4 when I started. I didn’t discuss it with my DP - he’s never had a weight problem and wouldn’t understand and it’s my journey.
