Weight loss surgery sleeve with mental health meds

Hello there

I Never used to be overweight until I started taking meds for OCD (antipsychotic medication) and went from a size 12/14 to a size 22.

im confident relatively with myself and have got to a size 18/20 losing 4 stone myself. Still more to go.

i engaged with a weight loss nhs team for a year and now I have a upcoming appointment with a nhs bariatric team for potential weight loss surgery.

bit nervous and even though am around 17 stone now, I am fit and cycle regularly, hoping to do London to Brighton bike ride too.

has anyone had surgery and it been ok and successful? Even maybe with mental health meds - which if you didn’t know are notorious for weight gain (antipsychotics)

many thanks

Have you thought about weight loss injections (you posted on the board for them so guessing so?)

You can take them with the MH meds and wouldn't have the risk of surgery?

I agree about the weight loss injections rather than a sleeve. That is incredibly drastic.

The injections aren’t really working for me tbh

I wouldn't consider bariatric surgery in this day and age when injections are a reasonable option. There are people using them who have had the surgery, and over time put the weight back on anyway. The success rate over longer term isn't great.

How long have you been on the injections and what are you on (if you don't mind me asking) I'd definitely want to avoid surgery where possible

It is a weight loss injections/treatments board not just injections, Op is in the right place to discuss surgery as a treatment too.

Op you might get some posters here who can share experiences, but as the board is relatively new and heavily WLI users you might be worth trying the Weightloss chat board too to catch more posters. I have seen a few posters who have had the surgery and now trying WLIs, hopefully they will see your post here and can offer their experiences of the surgery part of their story.

Good luck with the surgery and your ongoing journey ❤️

Is 17 stone really consideration for bariatric surgery? Gosh. I was 18 plus stone at 5 foot 4 BMI 42 and was told to join the gym by my surgery. I started Rybelsus instead, and then Mounjaro (self funded) and am now approaching 12 stone. I think it's wrong they are pushing surgery but won't fund injections. No disrespect to you, but that's wrong thinking

Good luck but sounds like you are doing quite well on your own

WeeOrcadian · 26/01/2025 10:17

I'm no HCP but I'd think they might need to tinker with the dose and possibly change to oral meds straight after surgery

You'd be best asking your consultant though
