Niche question about stopping MJ to get pregnant and then restart it 18-24 months later?!

Basically that - anyone thinking they may be in the same boat as me? And anyone know a good supplier that would be open to such a break and then restarting medication again?

For context:
I’ve been on MJ since end of May, I have lost over 5 stone and I’m about 1 lb away from a healthy BMI. My goal is mid-range healthy BMI, before starting to titrate down the doses and then coming off MJ completely (probably around May-June). I then will be off it for 2-3 months before trying to conceive and until it happens, pregnancy and breastfeeding so basically off MJ for anywhere between 15-24 months. I plan to focus on maintaining my new healthy and active lifestyle etc but I know I will feel so much more calm and at peace knowing that I can eventually when ready jump back on it to lose any extra weight gained during pregnancy or for a helping hand with maintenance. For the record, if I was not planning a pregnancy, I would not be planning to be fully coming off it, very happy to continue on a low dose indefinitely.

Just wondered if anyone else has the same thoughts/questions and also anyone know of a supplier with a flexible and supportive view on long-term maintenance like this??

I am happy to be corrected but I will be amazed if you can find a prescriber who is willing to let you take a two-year break and then resume. I suspect that at present you would need to meet the prescribing criteria as if you were a new patient; who knows what the rules will be in two years?

It's not a given that pregnancy weight gain will be permanent. I lost weight with both of my pregnancies in the first trimester due to nausea and then found that breastfeeding burned a huge amount of calories.

Shrinkingrose · 17/01/2025 16:21

This will not be permitted by anyone op. You can’t stop for two years and start again, you can only start again if you meet the prescribing criteria again.

mamy now offer long term maintenance, but this is not long term maintenance.

I imagine it will be a very different market in 2 years anyway. It may be that you can be prescribed a maintenance tablet. Congratulations on your weight loss. That's a fantastic achievement.

Thanks all!

I just figured, how is this different than Oushk’s maintenance plan where you pay a monthly fee to “stay on their books” and they support you with coaching as you come off the MJ? Isn’t that the same? You support me as I’m off and then if I feel I want to jump on again, I can (obvs from 2.5), but I don’t have to wait to become obese again! Maybe not, I will book a consultation with them to talk this through anyway. And yes, who knows, in another 2 years the landscape and criteria may look completely different!

Op, I think maybe you have not taken the time to read their plans? They do a max of 12 months without medication.

3wDavid · 17/01/2025 17:36

my thinking is, I was obese, and have been on MJ for a year, lost all the weight and ideally want to stay on for maintenance. But obviously, you can’t do that if you want to have a baby, so a break is required. However, that doesn’t change the fact I was obese and had this disease, I am prone to gaining all that weight, and actively want to maintain my weight loss with MJ’s help long-term/indefinitelly.

Yeh, I haven’t read them properly, that’s why I want to speak with someone and evaluate

We all get your thinking and understand the ask. The point remains you cannot take up to two years off and restart, no one offers this, now in two years that maybe different, but right now, no one, including oushk offer this,

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 17/01/2025 19:08

As @Shrinkingrose says, we do understand where you are coming from. The fact remains that I can’t think of any drug for a chronic condition where you could take a 2 yr+ break and then go straight back on it without a proper medical assessment. Perhaps this will be in place for GLP1 medications in two years.

I would also, gently, add that you are working on the assumption of the shortest possible window of time. I very much hope that you will conceive quickly once you are ready and have a smooth pregnancy and birth but as I am sure you know the path is not quite so straightforward for many couples. It would be considered within the range of ‘normal’ to take a year for you to conceive. You might then find that you want to continue breastfeeding beyond six months, for example. My point is that it wouldn’t take much for the gap to extend to three or even four years.

Of course this is only a guesstimate, I am loosely basing off of how my last pregnancy and bf went.

Also totally fine to have another medical assessment before being re-prescribed again. I don’t expect someone to blindly give me medication after a 2 year break of it, just hoping to find someone who is open to reassessing when the time comes and taking me on, without having to be obese again to qualify

That would take a crystal ball, OP. Sorry. All the best to you.

Snugglemonkey · 17/01/2025 20:50

I don't think you can plan this. I remember, pre baby, thinking of when was the best time of year to concieve. Then I became so desperate for a baby, those things seemed laughable.

It took me 6 years and several rounds if ivf for baby 1. 7 years and triple the rounds for baby 2. Pregnancy is not predictable.

You have no idea how long it will take to get pregnant. What you might feel like if you are breastfeeding. I thought maybe a year. Ended up 3 1/2 years baby 1, still going with baby 2.

I absolutely appreciate that you have lost so much weight and do not want to regain. But if you really want a baby, you are going to need to go for it and work out afterwards, afterwards.

I was slim pre baby. I want to loose 6 stones now. When I finish breastfeeding, I will go for mountjaro.

Shrinkingrose · 17/01/2025 20:52

Op, how long it takes to conceive a first child is often very different to a second.

habe your call with oushk, I think they will simply tell you they can only keep you on the books for 12 months and to get back in touch when the time comes.

good luck op.
