Mounjaro is wearing off

InkHeart2024 · 14/01/2025 05:54

I am now at the top dose. It worked great for the first 4 months but for the past 2 I've felt appetite suppression for a couple of days after injecting and it's wearing off quickly. I've always been less responsive to the WLIs - same happened with Wegovy though more quickly. I am just maintaining weight now despite having another stone and a half I could lose to be healthy. I can afford to keep taking the drug for maintenance though I did want to lose some more before maintaining. I'm a bit concerned that I'm at the top dose and only maintaining and that might not even last. I could try coming off it for a couple of months and going back on but I'd have to stockpile pens as I wouldn't weigh enough to start again at this point. What would people suggest? Has anyone else had this issue?

It doesn’t have an impact on 15 percent of people and it sounds like you’re in that 15 percent, likely any success has been driven by the mind,

id come off.

Any success has been driven by the mind? Where did I say that? That's just not the case. I was on Wegovy for 6 months and Mounjaro for 6 months and have lost 2.5 stones. I know the difference between being appetite suppressed and not. It's wearing off. That's why I said it's wearing off, not it doesn't work.

Sorry, as you said if wore off after a couple of days. A couple is defined as two. As such, it won’t even have hit peak effacy in your system at that point, so my conclusion is it did not work for you as you had the same on wegovy. Factually it should wear off a couple of days before re injecting, as that’s when effecy starts to decline.

apologies, it clearly does work for you.

I’m no expert but wondering if you titrate down for a couple of months and then titrate up again to try and lose the weight. What are your thoughts on maintenance? I wonder if you can help weight loss by changing the type or volume of food. Are you aware of any particular foods that you’ve found satisfying where you don’t gain weight and if you are plotting your calories so you know exactly how much you can eat without gaining? Just trying to think of others ways to help you aside from the jab. It is normal to feel hunger outside of the jabs and it may help to make peace with that. Has your weight loss stalled and are you giving in to hunger pangs? Have you sought pharmacy advice as to their recommendations. I know it’s complex and frustrating but if this is a means to an end maybe you need a plan earlier than a lot of people and it may be trial and error in finding what works for you.

A couple of days after injecting, after being on it for 6 months!

Thanks. Yes I'm tracking calories and have a pretty good diet - I'm now maintaining at around 1900 a day on average and that's where my hunger levels are. I'm not restricting calories as that is a trigger for bingeing. The beauty of Mounjaro is that it's easy to create a calorie deficit without triggering a binge so I'd rather maintain my weight with the aid of Mounjaro than lose more and go hungry by cutting calories further. But I take all your points about hunger and you're right. I am getting hungry before meal times but not snacking which is where my excess calories used to come from. Basically I think my problem is that my maintenance calories used to be 2400 and they are now 1900 😆 I could do more exercise but I've had a crap few months and lost motivation. Maybe titrating down or taking a month off and starting again at a low dose might help and also when the weather changes and days get longer I'm expecting more motivation to exercise.

OP talk to your prescriber. People on the internet give advice based on their very specific personal experience.

Onceachunkymonkey is trying to be helpful however it doesn’t sound like they have any medical experience; and even if they did they don’t know your individual circumstances in any detail.

they can’t give you advice on whether or to what extent the medicine is working, when it should reach peak efficacy for you or what step you should take.

kalokagathos · 14/01/2025 08:02

1900 is a lot of calories if you are middle aged, in the peri zone, are sedentary lifestyle with occasional exercise. To maintain, drop another 300 made up of good calories. I lost weight following Zoe app. Life changing !

InItToLoseIt · 14/01/2025 08:22

OP instead of coming off, you could go back down the doses and stay on each one for atleast a week or two before changing (counting clicks if you will) to the next lower dose.

Secondly, even if you decide to stop for a month, you can go back on if you're with providers that allow such like Cloud, Oushk Pharmulous. You won't need to stockpile if your provider is in agreement with your break.

Thirdly, how did you come to the number 1900 for calories? Did you recalculate your TDEE after losing weight to see how much calories you may need? Also, sometimes you may need to reduce even more than the TDEE calculator suggests you need so I'll look at your calories and/or diet again and see if there are any changes to be made.

Fourthly, speak to your provider so they can advise on what to do.

wineandagoodbook · 14/01/2025 08:34

I would be looking at around 1400cal for maintenance, and that's if active.

Have you recalculated your maintenace cals since you lost weight? You say that you would need to stock pile pens as you wouldn't be able to get them with your current weight.

Can you tell us your starting weight, current weight and goal weight? Plus height?

BackToWegovy · 14/01/2025 08:44

What percentage of your starting weight have you lost? If it is 10-20% then it has worked and you have now plateaued. That is what is supposed to happen not everyone will get the the weight they have in mind but will be a lot healthier than they were.

Yes, 1900 is correct for maintenance. I am still 12 stone and fairly active. 1400 would be low for me and not achievable.

@kalokagathos thanks for the response but I'm not looking to cut calories if it's going to leave me hungry. That is a trigger for bingeing for me. I'd rather maintain this weight indefinitely than go back to restricting calories beyond my tolerance. 1900 is my maintenance average. See attached screenshot of my Fitbit app which actually estimates my average calorie use as higher but trial and error tells me it's around 1900.

@InItToLoseIt thanks that is a good strategy to try.

Thanks - you're right. I've lost just under 10% so I would have liked to lose some more but I'm just a hungry person I guess and my appetite is too powerful 😆 I am delighted with my loss, I'm no longer obese and I'm happy with my appearance.

That’s fantastic - well done. Maintenance is not as motivating as weight loss so it is hard to not think something is going wrong.

BackToWegovy · 14/01/2025 08:59

If my maths is correct then your starting weight was 14 1/2 st and so 2 1/2 st is 17% which is nearly the maximum expected. Thats amazing in 6 months.

Is it?? Yes you're right 😆 it's almost 20%. I was always hopeless at maths. It's over a year actually with 6 months on Wegovy then 6 months on Mounjaro. Thank you, you've put it in perspective. I guess if I want to lose more I will have to work out a new strategy. I'd like to be able to maintain my weight where I am without Mounjaro obviously, that's the goal, and maybe if I reach that point in the next year I could try Mounjaro again at a later date to lose some more. I guess we all have to see this as part of a long term strategy to lose and maintain the loss. It's not a quick fix.

I agree not lowering calories as it becomes unmanageable. As you get lighter the calories you use in day to dsy life decrease as you are carrying less weight around. If you can get a walk or extra walk in most days your calorie deficit will increase and weight should continue to reduce.

gettingolderbutcooler · 14/01/2025 09:23

I find it wears off as the week progresses. I'm on 10mg now. Thought it was good but I've been on this dose about 2 months - might have to try next dose up.
I've only lost about a stone since October.

That's good advice. It's just so cold and miserable and I have had a crap few months and have almost zero motivation to move but once the spring starts to arrive I know I'll be more active. I've noticed how much easier some exercises are in the gym now I'm lighter and my knee no longer hurts when I squat...so many benefits!

A stone in 3 months is good! Nothing 'only' about it! Well done
