Mounjaro 4 Weeks PostPartum?

Mumtobe799 · 12/01/2025 10:09

Just a quick one to ask is Mounjaro safe 4 weeks postpartum?

I’ve asked midwifery but they’ve not really been able to give me an answer. I’m not breastfeeding and I’ve had an incredibly difficult pregnancy so just want to feel like myself again.

Thank you

I'm sure it would matter more if you were breastfeeding due to it being in your bloodstream and passing it on to your baby, but if you aren't then I can't imagine it would matter so much.
Worth contacting a pharmacy who prescribes it to ask. Hope you feel better soon.

Summerbod25 · 12/01/2025 10:17

I think you’d be best asking your GP as they’ll have your full medical history etc.

as an aside, I personally wouldn’t recommend it at such an early stage postpartum. It can make you feel rough. I think it would be incredibly difficult combined with lack of sleep, postpartum hormones, a new baby to care for, etc. You will naturally lose weight anyway over the next 9-12 months. I’d honestly recommend waiting a year until your baby is sleeping well/reliably before starting Mounjaro. You don’t need anything “extra” to deal with right now, just focus on rest, recovery, and adjusting to your little one. Congratulations on your baby

Can I ask what you mean by rough?

Thank you for your advice

Some users get side effects of tiredness, constipation, burps, nausea. I've been on it over 3 months and not had any. I think it's over eating and eating too many carbs as I don't do this, I still have some carbs though. Mounjaro can also cause dehydration so users have to drink lots of water. Eating little and often helps keep blood sugar stable too.

Can I ask how much you lost in your first month? I know if I could get a stone/stone and a half off quickly I’d feel SO much better.

This is correct, however, I strongly believe it’s nothing to do with what you eat! I am on month 3 (7.5mg) and currently suffering with side effects. I eat healthily. A friend of mine (with much more weight to lose) currently on same dosage, no issues or side effects. We eat a roughly similar diet. Your response and side effects to the medication will be individual. It’s not something I would recommend to a newly postpartum woman… as it’s likely you’re already dealing with enough aches and pains, sleep deprivation, effects of fluctuating hormones etc.
Also you are only 4 wks pp, you will drop weight anyway, give your body a chance to recover :)

I also think a lot is to do with what you eat , including how you cook meals. But agree some just can’t take the medicine, have bad side effects from it, like any medicine,

NoTouch · 12/01/2025 14:01

Your body and mind is going through so much post partum adding in Mounjaro will only add additional stress.

The last thing you need is a velcro baby that won't be put down and you can't get away from the toilet (either nausea or urgent diarrhea, or trying to deal with constipation, or you are exhausted through lack of calories after a broken night of sleep.

You have no idea if you are potentially going to have PND. How will you know if Mounjaro or PND are causing any mood changes?

I would give yourself a good 9-12 months for your body and mind to recover from the birth and time to find out what your babies needs are, then see how you feel before considering WLI.

You have been lucky (so far) to avoid side effects, many do avoid, it just means you tolerate the medication well, it doesn't mean others are doing it wrong.

Additional side effects can be caused by poor diet but the medications listed side effects are also possible for some at any time whether they eat perfectly or not, especially when starting/increasing doses.

Just 3 months into the medication you still might experience them, perhaps if/when you increase a dose you find harder to tolerate. Other people might just have hit their medication tolerance level earlier, or be on a higher dose than you.

I think everyone is saying the same thing.

yes some people have no side effects. These people usually eat clean, no fatty foods, fried foods, cooking in fat, crisps, cheese, overly carby foods, sugar ie chocolate /sweets etc, or too much dairy. Just lean proteins, veg, salads, fruits, with no added sugar or fats. And minimal to no alcohol.

some people have minimal side effects and eat these more of those things bur still in moderation.

some people have terrible gastro side effects, constipation, burping, the runs, nausea and these people often eat from the list which is known to cause issues but some others don’t, they just are not suited to the meds and struggle.

it doesn’t mean someone is doing it wrong. It’s not a blame thjng, we are all adults.

Mysticmaiden2024 · 12/01/2025 20:01

I haven't touched crisps, chocolate or sweets in months, even on Xmas day I only had 1000 calories and ate meat and veg and a low fat high protein cheesecake, that I made myself so knew what was in it, didn't touch any party food, junk, mince pies, alcohol etc. It was my birthday on the 19th Dec and I went to wagamama and chose a low calorie high protein main meal and couldn't finish it. I still ate well and didn't over indulge even on new years, I was working all day too.

I actually had regular ibs symptoms before MJ and it has reversed my symptoms to normal now. Today I'm eating lentil soup for dinner, don't fancy anything else.

I don't think it's to do with the dose, I'm on 7.5mg and read many comments from 2.5 or 5mg with side effects. I do eat less carbs and rich food and always eat little and often and stop as soon as i start feeling full, so i don't push myself. Often im splitting a main meal over 2 days. Never have takeaways, maybe one in 3 months but i was like this before MJ. I did 6 weeks body coach app before MJ so started eating clean then. I take collagen daily too and I don't drink alcohol so I guess I am quite clean eating.

I say the symptoms are caused by over eating because there was one of those TV celeb doctors who posted a video about this causing nausea and vomiting in users and it was posted on the mounjaro Facebook group, but I always thought this anyway.

Did you have a c section?

Yes I did. I have such an overhang!

I'm a midwife.

My advice is, give yourself three months of really focusing on healthy nutrition first, to help your healing. Focus on protein and vitamin C. Gentle exercise.

This will be harder on MJ.

Then if you still want to try MJ, go for it.

SilenceInside · 12/01/2025 21:18

@Mumtobe799 is your BMi over 30 at the moment?

PlantDoctor · 12/01/2025 21:20

Sounds awful. Give yourself more time to recover

Kay2000 · 12/01/2025 21:31

Don’t even consider it. Your body needs nutrients to heal after a C-section and I don’t know anyone who had one who wasn’t left with an overhang, so don’t obsess with that (I suspect celebs have a tummy tuck at the same time). Once you’ve recovered from the birth you can start exercising. Honestly your body needs to adjust to the shock of a major operation, alongside caring for a newborn baby, and that takes time. This drug is not an easy fix to lose post pregnancy weight, it comes with warnings and side effects.

I am going to do this!

My BMI ia 31.6 I can’t believe I’ve let myself get like this! It says I’m obese :(

Yes I did. I have such an overhang!

It will probably reduce massively! 4 weeks PP is nothing - i remember thinking "what on earth have i done to myself!" But my body has recovered remarkably since then. It's not the same but I am very happy with it.

Stop trying to "snap back" or whatever. Eat wholesome nourishing food that will let your body heal from pregnany and the MAJOR abdominal surgery. Walk lots. Get loads of fresh air. Cuddle your lovely new baby. Wear stuff that's comfy.

It's a cliche but they are only small for such a short while. Weight loss can come in due course.

Babyandmexox · 14/01/2025 01:51

Please be kind to yourself, you haven't let yourself go! You've just grew and birthed a baby! And had major surgery to!

Mumoffourbrats · 03/02/2025 02:35

I highly recommend not taking mounjaro yet. I had a baby 3.5 months ago and I started taking it last week. I've had the worst side effects. Vomiting for two days straight. Griping stomach pains and disgusting sulphur burps.

I tried to eat to start with Evan though I had no appetite whatsoever ( and usually I love food so couldn't imagine having hunger suppression) but I did! I had a boiled egg on a slice of sourdough and that was it.. it set me off. Couldn't eat it or Evan keep water down for two days. I was panicking thinking I may need to be hospitalised with dehydration. Day three thankfully symptoms calmed down. Still the thought of food was making me feel sick.

I do believe the bad side effects happened to me because my body has not fully recovered after having a baby. I had a severe allergic reaction after eating prawns 6 weeks postpartum and never been allergic to shellfish before. So I think I'm just sensitive at the minute.

My DS is taking mounjaro and it's been incredible for her she has lost 16lb in just over a month. I thought I would be ok but I wish I'd have educated myself better before I decided to take it. TBH it's only been 5 days and it has made me miserable. I'm not saying I won't try it again in the future but I think just give it more time and let my body heal naturally.

I mean ultimately it's up to you what you decide and that's your choice but I just wanted to share my experience because I think going through that with a four week old baby would be hell.

All the best

Dreammouse · 03/02/2025 02:47

Nope, give your body time to heal first. To do that effectively it needs to be fuelled adequately, prioritise protein and if you feel up to it get some steps in. Its normal to feel like this after your body has changed so much growing a new life, I know it probably doesn't feel like it but it's still early days and it's physically been through a lot as well as mentally.
