Mounjaro with cancer

First things first, I'm not going to do anything without my consultant's approval! Just exploring options.

I was wondering if anyone's tried mounjaro while receiving cancer treatment? I will be on oral chemo for the rest of my life, and have already been for 12 years (so I'm very used to it and the cancer is stable). Has anyone in a similar situation been allowed to use mounjaro?

I'm very obese (BMI around 39) and want to have the best possible chance of not getting any other nasty diseases, so losing weight is pretty essential, but I keep trying to eat less and failing (have been trying for years). I'm only in my early 40s so lots of life ahead of me and I want to make the most of it!

Just giving this a hopeful bump in case anyone with this experience spots it!

I think as you said this is mabey a conversation best had with your consultant. Cancer is such a broad term, there are so may variables that what works in one patient may not in the next.

Hopefully they will be able to find a way to support you

Don’t want to read and run, but I don’t think you will get the answer here op, this does need to be something you discuss with your consultant.

good luck.

Thank you both for replying, appreciate it.

@probablyabadidea

I read something recently about people on chemo using weight loss injections. It gave adverse results.

You probably find this research if you search?

probablyabadidea · 12/05/2025 17:52

I'm not expecting any replies, but just updating in case anyone in a similar situation has the same question in future. I talked this through with my consultant and he gave me the green light to try it if I decide I want to - all I have to do is let my nurse know if I'm starting mounjaro and they'll just make sure my bloods are monitored more frequently to check there's no interference with how my chemo's absorbed. Obviously everyone's cancer experience is different and some may not be allowed WLIs, but just wanted to update so anyone wondering the same thing knows it's at least worth a conversation with your medical team!

Thank you for sharing. All the best with treatment.

I read something yesterday saying that MJ is being trialled for those undergoing treatment for cancer for weight loss and it’s anti inflammatory effects.

I’ll see if I can find what I was reading

LavenderFields7 · 12/05/2025 18:09

I thought you shouldn’t, due to the increased risk of thyroid cancer.

Mumconnect · 12/05/2025 18:25

Give Livewell a ring. I asked them and they said they'll need a lot more info and to liaise with your GP but it's not an outright no.

That's what I like about them, they're willing to support complex patients where they can instead of medexpress who just say no to anyone complex because they just want to get as many people through as quickly as possible.

I've only had melanoma (fully treated with surgery) and was declined, so think your biggest issue might be finding somewhere that will prescribe it for you. If you qualify on the NHS and your Consultant has ok'd you should be ok. It's the private prescribers that are more risk adverse

I was fully honest on my application, and they looked at my NHS records too so glad I didn't lie.

MaryGreenhill · 12/05/2025 18:34

OP there is a lady on You Tube just started MJ and she's just st finished her radiotherapy for breast cancer she's called Kazza if you are interested.
Anyway just wanted to wish you the very very best 💐

Mumconnect · 12/05/2025 18:46

@Phunkychicken try Livewell. I asked about OP and they said they'll have to look into it but it's not an outright no. Think they're willing to take on patients with extra risk. Medexpress etc say no because they're just trying to process as many orders in an hour as possible, whereas I get the impression Livewell really care.

Phunkychicken · 12/05/2025 20:01

@Mumconnect ooh thank you, I did indeed use the other one you mentioned. I'll give it a go. I am sure my obesity is my current biggest risk factor to my health

They've really been superstars with me. I think it's so brilliant that they're taking on people and doing the extra checks that other places won't because it takes too long.

Let me know how you get on with them. I'm not affiliated at all, I'm just a very happy customer ☺️
