Strength training slowing weight loss?

Iv stepped up my strength training this week, and heavier weights as I lost 8lbs the first 10 days and noticing saggier skin around my arms and thighs. However, the scales are not budging now. Iv never really gone off scale weight pre MJ and more off how I look and how clothes fit. I'm fitting into my clothes that I didn't used to, so I know Iv lost weight. But it's quite disheartening to not see the scales move. This is why I went on MJ in the first place because I can never shift this last stone + some lbs. And I'm stuck there again. Iv really changed my mindset with food, eating ok and protein etc. just not eating snacks and lots of carbs. I feel great this week to, no side effects but hunger suppression isn't as strong, but I'll happily eat less, I'm not having to fight eating more.

Muscle will always weigh more but it will tone you so your measurements will be smaller.
do you take measurements?
weight training is the best thing women can do. Try to ignore the scale and focus on measurements and building muscle.

How long have you been on Mounjaro and how much have you lost overall?
It's helpful to try to understand what's happening in your body when you go into calorie deficit and exercise. That first 8lbs was likely at least 50% water weight. And if you increase exercise your muscles will retain water as they replenish the glycogen that is lost when they tear during exercise. So you need to look at weight loss over a period of time, not just weekly. On the whole though you need to focus on health rather than the scales. It's far better to maintain muscle mass as you lose weight than just reach an arbitrary figure on the scales.

VelvetWildflower · 11/01/2025 11:23

This is a new exercise programme. Your muscles will experience microtears from use and it can lead to water retention, increased blood volume etc and so the scales might not move for a bit.

Weight loss is made in the kitchen but you won't see a lot of muscle growth in a deficit anyway.

It’s hard to understand what you’re asking, as I can’t fathom if you’re actually asking if one weeks increased weight training is slowing your weight loss. If it is what you’re asking then of course not. It takes a long time to build muscle, and for women it is especially hard.

the first week is water weight, not fat in the main.

can you clarify how long have you been on it, as it reads like this is your second week.

So iv always been a gym goer- done strength training for the last couple years it's not new to me. I just didn't go as much in the Xmas hols due to kids and busy etc.

The measurement thing makes sense. Luckily I did take measurements at the beginning il do it again at the end of this week.

I just feel like over the last week I didn't lose anything. Not even the recommended 1-2lb a week. It's the whole thing of seeing results, and the scale shows its working (like physically shows) I just wanted to see if it's definitely because I'm growing/keeping muscle or is it just not working on me, do I need to increase dose. I'm on week 3, 2.5mg.

Oh op. No you’re not growing enough muscle in a week to slow weight loss.

SilenceInside · 11/01/2025 12:28

Not everyone loses weight on the 2.5mg dose, and you shouldn't be basing decisions on a single week of the scales staying the same. It is working for you anyway, you have lost 2.67 pounds per week on average which is more than the estimate of 1-2 pounds per week.

This happens to me. If I do any sort of exercise the scales don't move. It's really demoralising.

Muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat - a lb of muscle weighs exactly the same as a lb of fat. I think you mean that muscle is denser than fat.

@kirinm exactly this, this is why iv gone on MJ. It's been like this for years for me due to thyroid issues. I don't trust any weight loss technique, even the proven ones. As nothing has worked. And I know the first 8lbs was defo bloating water weight, as I look less puffy.

It's probably more inflammation from lifting heavy(I didn't mean muscle in a week, I just meant is this what is going to happen because I do strength training)

It's not going to stop me lifting as I'm 40 this year and I know this is the prime to get help my muscles.

I had a PT session yesterday so have DOMS - and will have them worse tomorrow - so there's literally no point weighing because until I stop aching, I know I'll be heavier than I was before I exercised.

I often only manage to lose when I do no exercise at all.

Why is it demoralising when you know what's happening in your body? I don't understand this

kirinm · 11/01/2025 13:03

@InkHeart2024 because it's constant and can take weeks for a whoosh moment. And exercise is constant so you can have DOMS week in week out. Losing weight isn't easy for me anymore - presumably because of my age.

Lucky for you that you don't feel demoralised.
