What happens after you reach your goal on Mountjaro etc?

Last year I lost 2 stone but there were times when it felt like the most miserable year of my life due to constant gnawing hunger always marring every work/rest/holi-day etc

I put on half a stone in the Xmas weeks and I’m finding it really difficult to get back in control. I know I can and will do it, it’s so hard though

Im not overweight enough to justify the expense of injections, but it got me to thinking, do you carry on injecting when you are at goal weight? I feel excessive hunger with maintenance eating never mind calorie reduction, which is why I’ve struggled with weight all my life. I eat really healthily, hardly any sweet treats, I’m just always hungry!

My question is, does the hunger return after you finish injections? Do you get the excessive hunger that you often get after a diet where your body tells you you need to put the weight back on?

Some people do, some people don't.

When I get to bmi 23 I will increase the time between the injections and/or titrate down the dose

So if I took 2 doses a month it would cost me £75 ish a month as there's 5 doses in a pen (I'm with Boots which is more expensive)

WeAllWould · 10/01/2025 12:07

I'm like you with the excessive hunger for maintenance or calorie reduction. It's like whenever my body notices that I'm trying to restrict or control diet, it goes haywire and I start starving every 2 hours!

I'm on maintenance now and yes I'm still taking Mounjato because I can't do it without this medication. The hunger pangs, constant mind chatter for food if I'm maintaining or restricting, the boredom snacking, never mind my hormonal issues that it's resolving. Nope, I'm on this for as long as I can stay on it.

TwirlyPineapple · 10/01/2025 12:34

My plan is to stop the injections and see how I do by myself. I've found an eating pattern that works for me, so I want to see if I can maintain it myself. However, I expect I will end up going back onto the lowest dose. Just enough to quiet the food noise enough to roughly maintain my final weight.

I'm fully open to staying on a maintenance dose for life. The fact that the injections have been so successful for me proves to me that my overeating/metabolism is a medical condition and I don't see a lifelong use of Mounjaro as different to any other medication you use long term.

FlappingMadly · 10/01/2025 14:00

What does 'hardly any sweet treats' mean?
Could you give an example of a days food? Not to judge - just to see if there's anything to suggest to help the hunger.

Gettingslimmer · 10/01/2025 14:21

Yes I will stay on, I know I will regain without, I’m on ten, and so likely I will move to a lower dose but will see. Maybe I will stay on ten and just do every nine days, bmi is 27 and I will get to 23 and then decide.

Gettingslimmer · 10/01/2025 14:23

Sorry op, to add I will stay on as I don’t want the hunger and cravings, I know the meds mean I won’t have that ever again, so I’m happy to stay on a maintenance dose and ensure I stay a slim healthy weight without the struggle.

Redlightbulb · 10/01/2025 14:36

You either stay on the injections at a maintenance dose, titrate down with the goal of coming off or go cold turkey and come off them completely.
Having lost vast amounts of weight and gaining it back multiple times I will be sticking to a maintenance dose long term with the hope of titrating down in the future but I will not be in a hurry to do so.

SnacklessWonder · 10/01/2025 14:51

I've recently stopped. The hunger is definitely back but it's no worse than pre-Mounjaro and I'm so out of the habit of over-eating and snacking I'm finding it easy enough to resist. I'm just living with the hunger and that's fine - I know I will eat later! I didn't want to stay on because I didn't want that added cost so will see how it goes.

Really glad I've found this thread. I have been on MJ since August, very slowly titrated up (just had my 2nd 10mg jab) and have now lost 31lbs and my BMI is 23.4. So I'm starting to think about stopping or titrating down.

Just interested in how you would spread one pen over 8 weeks instead of 4 when it says it should be used within 30 days? Is that ok to do?

I think they are averaging it. So one pen every second month, a month on and a month off, equates to two doses a month,

Theredjellybean · 12/01/2025 08:00

I'm a month into trying to find a maintenance dose that works.
I've used a pen over 7 weeks and it has been fine.
I'm currently using 3 mg weekly and while I get hungry for dinner , I can only eat a small portion.
I occasionally get hungry in the daytime but am very easily satisfied with small meals.
What has come back is taste for alcohol 😭 and a bit of odd snacking on crisps for example while waiting for dinner to cook.
I'm getting a few more thoughts about food too.
However I can control them
I will be staying on it for life too I think, I need 1000 calories or less and without MJ that is miserable to maintain

unsync · 12/01/2025 08:18

What do you eat though? Some foods have more satiety than others and you will feel less hungry if you are eating that way.

Theolittle · 12/01/2025 18:05

Thanks all for your comments on my op. I don’t have much more to lose but constant hunger and unhappiness with my weight has affected me since age 17, it’s no fun. If I do move to injections I want to do it knowing the full story.

Would be interested to know if you get as much enjoyment out of life in general? Food is a huge part of my enjoyment currently!

More enjoyment, way way more enjoyment, I’ve much more energy, I look better, clothes are a pleasure, I dress in what I think looks good, not to cover uo, and I don’t have any cravings, food noise or driving hunger. I can enjoy my food, stop after a healthy portion and give it no more thought, if I fancy something I have it, and I stop after a chocolate for example, fully satiated. And I can drink when I chose, simply I don’t fancy it much of the time, but can drink as normal when I wish Ie socialising,

I must say, food maybe giving you pleasure for the short period you’re eating it, but you’re miserable the rest of tne time it seems.

i thought you weren’t overweight enough to justify injections, I’m not sure what you’re trying to do, except search for negatives.

I have lost 2 stone, put half on cover Xmas so have another stone and a half to lose. I’m struggling to get back on the diet and wondering if injections are a better option

But if you’ve only a stone and a half it’s not an option. You need to be 30 or 27 bmi with health issues /certain ethnicities.

im not going to lie, its an odd thread, it does read like you want to hear people will either struggle when they come off or lead miserable lives on.
