So, you’re on the weight loss journey you never thought possible. You could be a few weeks, months or a year into it and you’re probably still wondering what on Earth is this sorcery and will I be Cinderella’d back in to smocky tops and circulation cutting waist bands once I’ve stopped. I want this thread to be about thriving and turning the ‘new old you’ into the ‘New you you never thought possible’.

Life enhancing tips and mantras sharing thread for those doing this for themselves. Everyone welcome whether you’re a week 1 jabber, someone with an overflowing sharps bin or someone such as me whose partner is on the journey.

No spam, MLMs, judgment, shame, dodgy links or disrespectful comments please.

WARDROBE

Take this thread as a sign to buy a new top, jeans or coat when you’re next out— in your new current size whether that’s your first size drop, if you’ve lost 7 pounds or you’ve lost four stone.

Nearly or reached goal weight and wondering what your capsule wardrobe should be? Start with the basics in colours you love to wear and slowly build your wardrobe around your new look. Wearing jeans in an 8, 10 or 12 is different to 18, 20, 22+ the same for any clothes really so where you used to love wearing black ‘because it’s slimming’ you may find colours no longer fill you with dread, same goes for stripes and chunky knits.

Take your time trying on in the fitting room, perhaps take a couple of trips over a few weeks so you can get used to your new shape, no one is judging you and for gods sake look in the mirror. If you’re still losing then you want slightly snug rather than loose because loose will soon be flappy.

Donate a few of your old size clothes to charity- not everything because you’ll do that at goal weight but a few pieces to slowly adjust to this new reality.

Get that hair cut booked. I’m not saying chop it all off but a fresh cut or colour perhaps even a different style is going to make you feel tip top.

Underwear purge- smaller boobs smaller bra, smaller bum smaller nickers. You get the gist. Bin the tatty and slowly replace as and when you need/can.

Lost a lot? You’ll need some new shoes because the old ones had been carrying much more. YES you do deserve them.

Consider alterations on expensive clothes you’re hesitant to let go of but only if these alterations aren’t going to cost near enough as much to replace said item and only if you’re confident such alterations will work. That size 22 Burberry Trench will not translate well into a size 12, same for those Levi’s- maybe have a leg turned into a skirt? Cheeky!

HEALTH

Start moving, you’re no longer carrying the weight of a baby or small child so begin thinking of more ways to get the blood pumping, walking more, dancing, swimming. Already use the gym? Turn that treadmill up a notch. Get your cozzy on, into the pool, sauna or steam room.

Time to reassess your vitamin intake. There’s plenty of great multivitamins on the market- factor some into your daily routine.

Drink more water. Eat more veg. Drink more water. Eat more veg. Drink more water. Eat more veg. Drink more water. Eat more veg. Drink more water. Eat more veg.

Skincare. An unhealthy diet and being overweight can leave you prone to breakouts and generally lacklustre skin so you may now have a routine that needs some tweaking. The same goes if you use makeup, new you new makeup look. Remember that glow comes from within- just saying.

Consider losing some other toxins whether it’s smoking, vaping, coke on the weekend, phone addiction, over drinking, gaming all night.

Smile! Be that smug skinny mini because you did it. You slayed the dragon, it’s not cheating, you didn’t take an easy option, you took control.

Amen to all that! I am only at the start of my journey but am already panicking about how to maintain and saying I wont buy new clothes as the jabs are a significant outlay from our family finances that I feel so guilty about
that being said I am not hiding that I am getting the help from injections as i have tried and failed miserably not so much to lose weight but to keep it off regardless of gym/activity levels

Yes i was the 20 stone woman consistently lifting weights 3 times a week and walking 12k steps a day

Determined that this is it for me now should I have to stay on the jabs forever! Just hope the costs come down as more and more go on them

Vinted is your friend, @Julesni77 - great bargains to be had (use the filters to limit to the condition you're happy with, even if that's BNWT), and on a few things I've bought the same thing in a smaller size and sold the bigger one to cover the cost.

You’ll do great.

Some of the cost of the jabs will be absorbed by you not spending as much on food for yourself, obviously the family spend will be similar but you’ll definitely pay less to eat less.

New interim clothes can be bought fairly inexpensively from charity shops, Vinted, Primark, supermarkets as you’re just starting out maybe try and save a little every week ready for when you will start to need things.

It’s a long term investment for your well-being, health, mobility, confidence, children- in time the prices will come down.

Just posting so this stays in my watched list for a bit

Azuresky68 · 12/07/2025 19:14

And me too. After a year on MJ I have got to goal. Agree with all the tips here. I am 69 and under 5 foot and lost 2 and a half stone. The most helpful thing is being on a Mumsnet thread where we all started at the same time. It really helped! Most of us have reached maintenance now.
