Mounjaro and travel insurance

Do I need to tell my insurer that I’m on Mounjaro? About to take out a new policy and wondering what to do?

I didn’t but I did say I was obese. I hadn’t realised that obesity was something to be disclosed on insurance

When you declare medical conditions for travel insurance, it’s the condition you need to screen and declare not the medication. It might be worth adding ‘weight loss’ or overweight or something similar to see if it comes up as a condition that needs to be declared. If it does, answer yes, and then it may ask if you have had surgery etc. There should be set questions for you to follow.
Maybe try a dummy online quote to see. Some insurers may ask, others probably won’t.
insurers are looking for any condition that ‘May’ cause illness on holiday and therefore the risk to them for medical costs.

Ah that’s helpful, thankyou. I think I’ll give them a ring and see what they say.

I had already got an annual policy. I messaged them to tell them that I was taking MJ, they weren't really interested once they knew it was for weightloss not diabetes.

When you run through a quote many insurers want to know about prescription medication and you must include MJ in your response.

Always answer honestly and if unsure err on the side of giving more information.

Greentrilby · 27/01/2025 21:14

So I rang the insurer and they weren’t interested in the slightest but I’m glad I made the call.

@Greentrilby May I ask who your insurer is? I'd like to switch because I've just spoken to mine and mentioned Mounjaro in passing and they've refused point-blank to cover me. At all. For anything! And this is a company I've been with all year. (Staysure)
They said that unless I've been prescribed it by a GP for a medical condition I'm not covered.
This is mad!!

Greentrilby · 03/02/2025 16:26

Madness indeed! I’m with Admiral.

Thanks. I use them for car/house insurance so will try them.

TheMeasure · 03/02/2025 16:37

@Greentrilby At what point in the application process did you mention it?

You need to tell them it has been prescribed to you by a GPhC registered pharmacy to treat Obesity (or obesity and high blood pressure or whatever).

They won't cover you if they think you are taking shady black market medication.

Greentrilby · 03/02/2025 17:17

i didn’t mention it at all as I’m no longer obese or have diabetes or high blood pressure. It was only as an afterthought that I wondered if I should have told them. When I rang they weren’t interested but it gave me piece of mind that I had checked.

I did try to say this (that it wasn't a dodgy Botox salon but under medical supervision, albeit online and that my GP was aware) but to be honest, I don't think the telephone operator really knew much about it - just heard "online" and said no. She did check with a supervisor but I'm not sure how she relayed the query. Might have got lost in translation. I wasn't sure if Oushk (my supplier) counted as being prescribed by a pharmacist. She clarified that it had to be one I went to in person and they prescribed it for me. I said it doesn't work like that but she wasn't interested by that point.

Try sending them an email setting it out and making it clear it is from a regulated pharmacy with a prescription.

TheMeasure · 03/02/2025 18:11

That's a good idea.

TheMeasure · 05/02/2025 18:06

@WorriedRelative Thanks for that suggestion. They've got back to me and apologised for the confusion and said that I WILL be covered.

Brilliant news!

I think lots of people don't understand that there are legit pharmacies prescribing privately online.
