Question for those who are far along in their mounjaro journey... I am not feeling positive :(

Morning everyone. I injected my first 2.5mg MJ dose last Thursday evening and honestly, now we are on day 4, I don't think there has been any change to my eating habits / appetite / constant "what am I going to eat next "chatter in my head. I also went out last night for a pizza and had no problem eating all of it except some of the crusts, and I still wanted to eat chocolate afterwards...

I know that 2.5 is a "loading dose", and it can take time for it to kick in, but I've read online of so many people within 24-48 hours suddenly not being able finish off a meal and they end up losing a significant amount of weight in their first week on the drug.

Everyone is different but it's quite disheartening to be spending £00's of pounds a month on something that is potentially not going to work and cause gastric side effects which I am already worried about.

I really do want to give it more time - my BMI is 36.2 and I am about 6 stone overweight - but also part of me just wants to throw the towel in now.

For those who are far along in their MJ journey, or perhaps even now maintaining, how long did it take for you to feel appetite suppression? I would really like to hear some stories of encouragement right now!

It is a long term process, you can't judge anything based on 4 days on the starting dose which isn't even intended to produce weight loss. I've been on Mounjaro for 6 months now, my starting weight was 22stone so I knew I'd be on it for about a year or so at least. Some people don't start losing weight and feeling the suppression until the higher doses, many will be somewhere inbetween and some will from the first week. It's an individual process, your body will react in it's own way, different to other people's.

When you signed up and started, you would have planned for being on the medication for several months, maybe up to a year? You're 4 days in, really give it some time.

spuddy4 · 06/01/2025 11:32

I hear you OP. I've been using MJ since May and thought about jacking it in a few times because after reading about everyone else's losses I was sure it wasn't working for me.

I've lost about 3 1/2 stone now and most of that since around September/October. For me going up to 10mg was a game changer and now I really feel like it's working.

Give it a few months and then see how you feel, don't worry about others losing loads just try not to compare.

murraymcgill · 06/01/2025 11:35

@mounjaro2025 don't worry you'll get there eventually I started in November I've lost over 2 stone stat weight was 15st 4lbs so don't worry thinhs will work out and you'll see how great u feel in a few months I'm the same o dont have thay kind of money but I think it'll be worth it when I see myself un the summer stick at it and good luck

Anyone had any side effects? This is what's putting me off (as well as the cost)

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 06/01/2025 11:47

Some people find the 2.5 to be sufficient but it isn't a recommended therapeutic dose until 5mg.

The way it works is each week it builds up in your system. You will find that it likely peaks midweek but with consistent application the troughs are manageable.

Some of us are also slower losers than others. There is a benefit to this as we have longer to learn healthier habits.

For me personally 7.5mg is the sweet spot but I needed to work my way up from 5 to 7.5 quite carefully as the slowed digestion was causing some issues but on 2.5mg I could still have eaten a cow.

Strawber · 06/01/2025 11:48

Don't worry op. When you take your next injection it will start to build up and you will hopefully feel more appetite suppression. However have you weighed yourself anyway because you may be surprised

FlappingMadly · 06/01/2025 11:59

I think 2.5 sees losses too because of the mindset and therefore changed eating, hence water weight which can be a lot. I didn't lose that because i was losing before MJ.
It will happen.

What side effects are you worried about in particular, @TallulahBetty ? Lots of people experience mild side effects, but they are manageable with some dietary changes and OTC treatments. Equally lots of people don't have any side effects at all, or very very mild like a bit of tiredness or very mild nausea.

mandarinchocolate · 06/01/2025 12:07

I've been on it since May
Initially lost 15kgs but have now been stuck at the same weight, give or take a kilo for 2 months. On 15mg.
Any suggestions? Or anyone else the same?

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 06/01/2025 12:08

I have no advice
in 3m I have lost 2kg….

on wegovy which I can’t switch back to I lost 8 kg is the same period.
the side effects are also shite…. More eggy burps anyone?

I don't know what they are, which is why I am asking.

Bellyblueboy · 06/01/2025 13:27

Thinking back to the first week it was like a normal diet for me. I am on week 15 now and have lost just over two stone.

haven’t had much in the way of side effects - dull beaches in week one and a bit of diarrhea.

You need to give it longer - but from what I have read people do react differently.

Ifeelfat · 06/01/2025 13:42

@Bellyblueboy what app is that?

WaitingForMojo · 06/01/2025 13:48

I’m 5.5 stone down, started in April 2024. Had horrendous side effects though that lasted a good few months. It’s better now.

I had a lengthy plateau last year, have since lost a couple more kilos and then hit another plateau! The body is sometimes a mysterious thing. How far off a healthy weight are you?

unsync · 06/01/2025 14:06

It's a marathon not a race, patience is important so you don't self sabotage. I aim for 1/2 kg loss a week. I've been going since end March 24.

Bellyblueboy · 06/01/2025 14:14

Ifeelfat · 06/01/2025 13:42

@Bellyblueboy what app is that?

Shotsy. It’s free - I love it. Gives weight loss by shot and reminds you of when (and where!) to inject next.

Shrinkingrose · 06/01/2025 14:26

Wanting to throw the towel in four days in is very extreme indeed. Clearly the drug works, and you know you need to give it time. 2.5 is initiate treatment.

you maybe one of the 15 percent that it doesn’t work for. But there is no way to know this for a few weeks. Until at least on a therapeutic dose of 5mg.

have you considered counselling to go along with this, as the extreme reaction your having so fast, is concerning.

DietStartsM0NDAY · 06/01/2025 14:31

I didn't lose anything in the first month, ate relatively normally. I moved up to 5mg on week 4, and have lost steadily ever since. 3 stone since the middle of June.
Keep with it and be patient. It is a fantastic drug and incredibly helpful, but don't expect miracles overnight. Losing too quickly can lead to undesirable effects such as hair loss due to not nourishing your body enough.
I have never in my life had such sustainable weight loss. I feel totally in control and I'm sure give time you will too.
Good luck

SilenceInside · 06/01/2025 14:33

@TallulahBetty I assumed that you were afraid of something specific, rather than a general unknown.

Here's an article about the possible side effects and how to manage them if they happen:

Jochef · 06/01/2025 17:57

It’s been life changing for me. It’s not just the weight loss (68lbs since May) my mental health, my cholesterol, my health - I had a heart attack last Christmas, which is hardly surprising given the size of me and my rubbish diet. I still have 28lbs to shift and currently on my 5th plateau which has lasted 4 weeks. I’m on 15mg. I don’t regret spending the money, I only wish I’d had the opportunity to do it sooner. I’ve done WW and Slimming World and Keto. This is the only thing that has worked. Give it a chance

Doggymummar · 06/01/2025 18:00

I've been on nearly 2 years now, I didn't lose weight until 10mg level and it's just stopped working this month for me. Just ordered 12.5 mg pen. See how you feel in six months

Doggymummar · 06/01/2025 18:05

I was stuck for 9 months last year at around 200lb I am now at 193 so only lost 7lb last year if you choose to look at it like that. I look at the bigger picture that I have lost 5 stone I. 15 months and six dress sizes, keep going if you have weight to lose it will eventually let it go.b

BookishType · 06/01/2025 18:09

I had suppression even at 2.5mg. But I think that, and the fact I’ve not had side effects is just luck.

Don’t give up! You may feel completely different on 5mg.

Donotgogentle · 06/01/2025 18:16

Tbh I do wonder whether it’s right for you op.

If despite understanding how the medication works you’re disheartened and considering giving up after only 4 days it might not be a good idea for you from an emotional well being perspective? WLI can be a bit of an rollercoaster which possibly you’re not in the right frame of mind for at the moment.

Would counselling be an option as pp suggested?
