Mounjaro prescribed by GP?

Hello,
Has anyone in Wales managed to get Mounjaro prescribed by your GP?
I have an appointment later this week but I don’t want to waste theirs or my time if they won’t prescribe it.
My bmi is 47 and I have high blood pressure so not sure if that makes any difference 🤷‍♀️

From what I have read, very few people get it prescribed by their GP - the vast majority of people are paying for private prescriptions.

Ilovethewild · 05/01/2025 21:48

Do you know if your GP even prescribe it?

AFAIK it’s either for diabetes or as part of Teir 3 (I think) weight loss management program

otherwise most get it online and pay for it

Redlightbulb · 06/01/2025 00:23

Unless you have type 2 diabetes then you have zero chance.

I don’t think GPs can prescribe it for weight loss. You have to be referred to the NHS weight management clinic and work your way up through the tiers. Even then it is pot luck if they have funding for the injections as it is more geared up to having surgery

i've been told that unless you are type 2 diabetic, there is pretty much zero chance of it being prescribed!

Fullofpudding · 06/01/2025 00:32

Have you completed a tier 2 programme with your GP. Weight loss jabs come as part of Tier 3 after you've proved you still need help.

Yup that's what happened to me! Worked my way through the tiers and told I am eligible for jabs but they didn't have the funding for them now, but I could have surgery.

I'm in England, not Wales, so may not be relevant.

My GP has prescribed MJ for me as a 3rd tier medication as I have T2 Diabetes. During my appointment he repeatedly stated that he absolutely was NOT prescribing it for weightloss but to control my blood sugar. He wrote that in my notes. He stressed that it couldn't be prescribed for weight loss on the NHS.

NoBodyNoCrime · 06/01/2025 05:46

England not Wales but I have it prescribed by my GP. At the point it was prescribed my BMI was 31 and she was very clear it was not being prescribed for weight loss but that could be a beneficial side effect. I’ve never had any weight loss support via my GP so don’t know what the Tier treatments refer to. It was prescribed for blood sugar control, I am a T2 diabetic and insulin resistant (when I was first diagnosed my BMI was 27, I have been T2 diabetic 12 years and my highest ever BMI was the 31 I hit at the start of last year).

In terms of helping my diabetes it’s been fantastic and my blood sugar (HbA1c) has gone from 81 to 48. I did used to binge on sugar hence the weight gain, I’m now close to a healthy BMI. I’m not using any other medication now for diabetes. It’s completely taken away that desire to binge which was very destructive and has massively helped my overall mental health too.

ILoveAnnaQuay · 06/01/2025 05:56

@Nobodynocrime that's really encouraging to hear. I'm desperate to control my blood sugar. I don't have a sweet tooth but do binge on crisps, nuts, cheese.

Do you mind me asking how long it took you to get your HbA1C below 48?

christmascanfuckoff · 06/01/2025 06:39

My husband has however not for weight loss but for diabetes type 2 after bad reaction to ozempic

I’m prescribed it for weight loss? Zero diabetes

Incorrect. I get it for weight loss

ChimneyRock · 06/01/2025 14:15

I don't know but I would imagine that if your bmi is 47, then being prescribed it ought to be possible.
But if not, would paying privately be at all possible? It sounds as if your health would benefit immensely.
Good luck.

FrogOnSpeed · 06/01/2025 14:20

Alot of people have said that they save more than the cost of the jabs in reduction in junk food, takeaways and alcohol. So worth checking if you could afford to pay for the jabs yourself OP?

Shrinkingrose · 06/01/2025 14:21

@VegTrug , from an nhs gp? Not private prescription?

Four months between those two blood tests.

NHS GP, yes. Had to go through some hoops first to acquire it but they actually offered it to me initially. I didn't know it was available.

I think you’ve a unique situation with your gp. As it was only recently approved by the nhs for weight loss, there was a huge announcement about5 it starting in the summer, and it taking 12 years and being via weight loss management clinics. That was literally weeks ago.

I am not sure why your gp broke the nhs rules to prescribe for you, but there must be an underlying reason there ie your weight had become such a health concern.

it doesn’t really change the advice to the op though. The nhs and government have been very clear.
