So cold!

Is this a side effect that other people have noticed? I'm currently sitting here under a heated throw that I finally bought today after a few weeks of shivering next to the radiator in several layers of wool. This has been a complete 180 for me, as I'm known for always being too hot and never needing to wear a coat unless it's literally freezing. It's a bit of a running joke in my office - "No point asking ChipShop if it's cold out, she'd think it was a bit warm in the Arctic".

I'm still 13st so I doubt I've lost enough fat to feel the cold that much. The heated throw is lovely and will be heavily deployed from now on but I'm just curious to know if Mounjaro itself is known to have "feeling cold" as a side effect. It's not listed on the patient leaflet.

I was always comfortably warm but since losing almost 4 stone down to just over 14 stone just recently I am cold and I swear my circulation is worse than it was as I seem to have cold feet where I never used to - on the other hand it's been a really mild winter up to the last few days here so it might just be more the sudden drop in contrast?

Tittibits · 04/01/2025 14:11

I got the feeling cold, mainly my feet for just a day on day 3 after the jab. I needed to wear thick socks to bed. Settled down in the end.

Snozzlemaid · 04/01/2025 14:14

Yes I've been cold from the start of taking MJ 6 months ago.
As it happened from the outset I can't put it down to the weight loss, it's the medication.
Dp is astounded I keep saying how cold I am. I too was well known for never feeling cold. A colleague would sometimes sit closer to me when she was cold to feel the heat I was radiating.

I'm looking forward to hopefully coping better in hot weather though.

morbidcuriosity · 04/01/2025 14:32

Yes, absolutely freezing.. my heating bill is much higher..
@Snozzlemaid that's a good point about how we will feel in the summer months.. as I was always too hot.. but less fat now I may not be a sweaty mess this summer! .
And yes for the heated throw.. I love mine.

ShiftAMountain · 04/01/2025 14:39

You read my mind, OP. I am so bleeding cold and have been now for weeks! I'm sat next to a radiator going at full blast in a house where everyone else is sat in t-shirts and they are the only thing stopping me turning the thermostat up to previously unheard of temperatures!

I am wearing a vest, a long sleeved t shirt and a wool jumper. I am literally shivering.

Brrrr. Roll on the heat of summer (fat me never would have said that 😂).

NoTouch · 04/01/2025 14:48

Mounjaro has an effect on your metabolism, and indirectly circulation. The slowing of gastric emptying could make your metabolism sluggish resulting in a cold feeling.

Also low blood sugar, dehydration, or electrolyte imbalances can lead to feelings of coldness - trying keeping blood sugar stable by eating little but often and keep hydrated. You could try electrolytes occasionally.

If you have side effect like nausea, D&V it can cause you to feel cold - taking something to alleviate the symptoms might help.

Otherwise just snuggle up under the heated throw until summer!

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 04/01/2025 15:47

Yes, it’s a well-known side effect and comes up often on this board. It’s partly related to the way the medication acts on the hypothalamus, and over time is compounded by the loss of fat as a natural insulator.

flobbynomore · 04/01/2025 16:08

I have noticed this too - I am much colder than I used to be, and have even resorted to fleecy pyjamas and a hot water bottle in bed! It's definitely since starting Mounjaro in September that I've noticed this - and I'm still well padded!

Doggymummar · 04/01/2025 16:09

It is listed as a side effect, but it's not one I have had.

Justleaveitblankthen · 04/01/2025 16:27

Won't it also be the low calories(=energy=warmt) being consumed?

Justleaveitblankthen · 04/01/2025 16:28

warmth

InfoSecInTheCity · 04/01/2025 16:52

Yes unfortunately, and like you I was previously never cold, could get through most winters with just a hoodie, no coat needed.

This year I have invested in a heated blanket for the sofa and another for my desk so I can be warm while I work. I have knee high socks and leg warmers, I have a Snoodie from primark that has an inner pocket to hold a hot water bottle, I drink hot drinks pretty much constantly and wear gloves which have never been needed before.

Here's wishing and hoping for a beautiful sunny warm March like we had back in 2020 so we can start to defrost.

Oh, I did have a blissful few hours over the weekend as we went away to a lodge with a hot tub, I loved that hot tub! If it wasn't for the fact that the rest of the family wanted to do stuff that didnt involve stewing in hot water I'd have lived in it for the full 3 days.

Cartwrightandson · 04/01/2025 17:43

Could be side effect of injection, because it's absolutely bloody freezing, lower calorie intake or because you've lost fat/insulation

Mysticmaiden2024 · 04/01/2025 18:13

I've always been a cold person, especially my hands and feet due to low iron, then thought I'd resolved it after b12 injections from summer. Then started mounjaro in October, from start constantly freezing 🥶 I've got an electric blanket laid on my sofa so I cam keep warm. Thinking of chopping ends of gloves to keep hands warm but still use my fingers for phone 🙈🤣 I think it's the low calories and low blood sugar!

UpUpUpU · 04/01/2025 18:17

Yep! Also a very hot person here who now feels freezing the first half of the week after injecting. Only thing that helps is a very hot bath!

Peae · 04/01/2025 18:20

It’s because your metabolism is slowing. Your body is responding to fewer calories by reducing the number of calories spent on keeping warm.
Our bodies are trying to stay overweight(at the “set point” theory)!

Turtle Doves do cashmere wrist warmers recycled from old cashmere jumpers. They magically keep your fingers really warm. Keeping the wrist pulse point warm means that your finger tips warm up too.

Other brands do them too but I have found that the cashmere ones are better at warming you up than polyester mix cheaper gloves.

Great thanks I'll have a look 😊

Odd how it's obviously a well-known side effect but not explicitly mentioned on the patient leaflet. I will report it on the Yellow Card scheme I think.

I still have my heated blanket on and I've now got one of my snakes snuggled under it with me. She very much approves of it so that's something anyway!

KeepinOn · 04/01/2025 20:20

I wasn't a cold person until I lost about 40kg a decade ago. The weight eventually crept back up, but I stayed cold. Since starting MJ last July, though, it's definitely worse. I am really uncomfortable a lot of the time, try to wear layers and use a heated throw, but it's constant even so. I had bloods done, no issues. Just a side effect of MJ made worse by my own existing propensity to run cold. 🥶

Aw what kind of snake is it?

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 04/01/2025 20:54

She's a corn snake. Very elderly and mainly just wants to sit still somewhere warm - much like me, in fact. I will be getting my boy python out in a moment and seeing what he makes of it!

eyeblob · 04/01/2025 21:26

I thought it was to do with blood vessels and being overweight. I forget the reason now, but seem to remember it doesnt ever improve

Snozzlemaid · 04/01/2025 21:47

I second the recommendation for Turtle Doves cashmere wrist warmers.
I wfh and wear them daily at the moment.

Lola3034 · 04/01/2025 22:45

Thermostat set on 22 degrees and I am wearing layers 😅. No one seems to complain about the temperature in a house but me😁.
