Mounjaro and hrt

myladyjane · 04/01/2025 09:14

Can I ask another question pls (again sorry if it's been done before).

Am 50 and whilst so far my peri symptoms have been fine and no hrt required yet, I suspect that may change soonish (am keeping an open mind).

I am about 80% sure I want to start mounjaro - probably Feb/march

So if I did start hrt, what experiences are people having? I know hrt can impact weight gain but does the Mounajaro counteract that? What about symptoms? Basically looking for experience

Thanks

Following as in similar position, late 40s, starting Mounjaro next week, thinking of going on HRT.

daffodilandtulip · 04/01/2025 09:23

I was advised not to have HRT because my BMI was 37 and there's family history of blood clots. I desperately wanted it because of horrific sleep, anxiety, palpitations, headaches, muscle and joint pain so that was the final push for me to try Mounjaro.

I've lost over 25% of my body weight and now don't have any of the symptoms that were troubling me...

(Obviously it might get worse as I get older, but for now, I don't even want hrt anymore.)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/01/2025 09:24

Ok, might hold off on the HRT for a bit then.

That's interesting thanks @daffodilandtulip. What peri symptoms I do have I manage quite well with things like magnesium supplements (as I say so far only very mild) and I've found it difficult to determine if they are actually more down to stress than hormones so I'd be intrigued to see if some of the anti inflammatory impacts help.

I have found a couple of articles to say the two drugs could actually work well together and enhance benefits (that was ozempic) and some anecdotal stuff on Reddit which is a bit on the fence but nothing to suggest they are contradictory.

I wonder if the approach should be to try mounjaro sooner rather than later and see what impact that has with the hope it may put me in a good place as peri ramps up. As my mother delights in reminding me, both her and my grandma were still having regular periods in their mid 50s so I suspect I've got a way to go.......

I am 56, 2 years post menopause and trying to get an appointment with the Dr to discuss starting HRT.

I've been on MJ for 6 months lost 5st and my BMI is now around 35. I have high blood pressure but it is well controlled and much better since starting MJ and weight loss. No history of blood clots or breast cancer in family.

My menopause symptoms have increased in the last 6 months - 1 year, the biggest issue is hot flashes which have been just getting worse, not getting enough sleep and I am knackered. Wore my fitbit for a few nights and I am only getting on average 4-5 hours of broken sleep a night.

I always blamed my bad sleep on my huge excess weight (and maybe partly I didn't deserve help as it was my own fault), but now I've lost so much I hope I can be given HRT.

Other symptoms are brain fog/memory, not caring about things, avoidance, confidence (all along with lack of sleep are becoming a huge issue at work - as well as personal life - and I need to work for at least another 5-6 years!), sore joints, hair loss, vaginal atrophy.

Everything I have read indicates HRT is the way to go.

Dunkou · 04/01/2025 14:53

I'd not begin them within a few months of each other, get going on either MJ or HRT and then add the other one in.

It might take a while to find the right HRT, and if you are getting side-effects from starting MJ you won't know which one is causing side-effects. MJ also seems to give some people heavier periods (though not sure if just at beginning), I don't know how that would play into a decision.

I wouldn't bring weight gain from HRT into the equation, not everyone puts on weight with it.

I'm new to MJ (1 week!) but been on HRT for 12 years. I only had the weight gain in the last 7 years, and that is due to lifestyle and getting older, not the HRT.

Really useful. I think that I am going to look to start the mj first as honestly the peri symptoms are mild. My hope is that having the headspace to work on good food and exercise may help as peri progresses.

Have talked it through a lot with dh who is broadly supportive and has done some research of his own bless him. And am going to look to start next month (Jan is an awful work month wise and I have a birthday trip away with dd early Feb so mid Feb seemed to be a good point to have the room to focus and manage side effects). Eekkk.

I think MJ first is a good call if your peri symptoms aren't bad. I wasn't overweight when I went into menopause, but I think I had bad symptoms as I had some insulin resistance starting, from years of eating too many carbs. So you might find the MJ helps anyway.

Picking up this thread which I read with interest earlier this month as I saw a specialist Menopause doctor yesterday.

I am 46 and have what I’d describe as mostly mild perimenopause symptoms. The most noticeable being brain fog. I’ve been on Mounjaro for five weeks (5th shot just taken). My BMI was just over 30 when I started and is now 27.5 so I’ve had excellent loss at 2.5mg and am sticking with it for at least the next pen.

Anyway, the main point I wanted to share is that she advised starting HRT now was absolutely fine and in fact combining the weight loss with starting HRT was likely to bring me a huge physical and psychological boost. I have a very straightforward medical history so no red flags etc. so that may not be true for everyone but I wanted to share that I was advised to go for it in starting HRT and Mounjaro within a shortish window.

olympicsrock · 18/01/2025 08:51

Whilst on MJ I had to stop magnesium as they made the nausea/ indigestion much worse. Both can cause it.
I’ve been on HRT patches and MJ with no issue.

murraymcgill · 18/01/2025 09:17
