So expensive, how do you choose?

The price differences between these medicines are huge so how do you choose?

Where I live the prices are fixed at approimately:

Mounjaro - £450 per month
Wegovy - £300 per month
Saxenda - £250 per month
Mysimba - £110 per month
Orlistat - £26 per month

I started the free weightloss 3 month programme funded by the public health service 2 weeks ago. So next week I get the option of discussing taking one of those listed above with the doctor. To be honest, the prices terrify me. But so does the thought of having a heart attack.

There's loads of threads on here about mounjaro and wegovy but has anyone had the others?

The first three are all GLP-1 medications. Mounjaro and Wegovy are once a week injections, Saxenda is daily. Mounjaro is proven to be the most effective with the least side effects.

MySimba is less effective than the GLP-1s and seems to have more serious side effects.

Orlistat is a fat binder that stops you from being able to absorb fat. It produces weight loss as a result, but has unpleasant side effects of oily stools and poor bowel control/urgency. You have to eat a low fat diet to avoid those. It's also not as effective as the GLP-1 medications.

If the cost is an issue, you could try Saxenda as the cheapest of the GLP-1s see how you get on. I personally wouldn't take MySimba or Orlistat because of the possible side effects and the lesser efficacy.

£450 per month for Mounjaro? I havent paid full price yet, the most I've paid is £110.

MiffyBuns · 02/01/2025 20:24

Where do you live??

dcbgr · 02/01/2025 20:27

Check out some comparison sites: MJ is around 120 a month, Wegovy a bit less. The others are much less effective and have unpleasant side effects so no point to go there.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 20:27

I'd assume it's not the UK, and the prices have been converted in sterling to make it easier for us to understand.

dcbgr · 02/01/2025 20:28

Prices quoted were for the UK. If you live somewhere with very strange high prices your options are to visit other places and buy there or go grey.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 20:30

@MrTiddlesTheCat could you confirm if you're in the UK or not?

MJconfessions · 02/01/2025 20:33

do you have health insurance?

TheSillyGoose · 02/01/2025 20:36

I've just paid £130 for mounjaro (4 weeks at 15mg). Your prices seem awfully steep

Shrinkingrose · 02/01/2025 21:45

Op, you know a pen lasts you 4 weeks right? Not a pen a week?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 02/01/2025 22:04

No I'm not in the UK. I'm in Sweden.

raspberrymeringue · 02/01/2025 22:06

Mounjaro UK pens hold 4 weeks of doses, but in the USA the pens are single dose and a lot more expensive.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 22:11

The prices in the OP are per month, so the format of the pen doesn't really matter. It's either for 4 single use pens like in the US or 1 multiple use pen like in the UK.

These prices are way off. I've been on it for three months. Most I've paid is 150

MummytoE · 02/01/2025 22:18

Oh wait are you not in UK?

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 22:18

@MummytoE the OP is in Sweden. Are you paying £150 per month in Sweden?

Yes,....ok no sorry I responded too quickly

Ermengarde · 02/01/2025 22:21

If I had to choose from your list with those prices, I’d choose Wegovy. It’s effective and has proven health benefits. At those prices it’s not worth a 50% increase for Mounjaro in my opinion.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 02/01/2025 22:29

My DH is opposed to orlistat and mysimba. The first because he says It's like a form of aversion therapy. The second because it carries a suiide warning and I've been struggling with my mental health recently.

OP posts:
SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 22:30

Actually, I agree with @Ermengarde, just noticed that the Wegovy is only £50 more than the Saxenda, but it's much more effective. And it's only a weekly injection rather than daily.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 22:31

@MrTiddlesTheCat I agree with your DH, plus both are much less effective than the GLP-1 type medications.

There is a dedicated thread for posting codes. Please don't post them elsewhere, it's really annoying. Your post will be deleted.

That's insanely expensive for Mounjaro. Why so much more expensive in Sweden?
