Mounjaro?

Can anyone who has used it give some idea what it’s like?

I am very overweight and am seriously considering it but am just wondering how it feels when using it? Did you have any side effects?

Also what happens when you stop taking it? I don’t think I want to use it long long term
but maybe up to a year. Do you pile all the weight back on once you stop using it or does it “reset” your eating habits so it’s easier to maintain healthier habits long term?

Thanks for deleting the comment above @mumsnet but what about the username? Can this be removed too
before it upsets any other posters?

Fucking hell.

Am speechless.

Anyways.

I have lost 4st on MJ, it just completely switches off your food switch.

I've gone from it being my every thought to reminding myself to eat.

I've been off it a month and the food thoughts have come back a little but I've not gained.

CBStrike · 02/01/2025 19:35

Why on earth was that even allowed as a username?!

The comment that’s been deleted was actually mild in comparison 😡

Erm…. That is going to derail your thread OP, I’m so sorry you had to have that as your first reply.

as for your question, not sure but I’ve decided to try, my first pen arrives tomorrow. The ladies on the weight loss injection board in the weight loss section were very helpful when I had questions

12purplepencils · 02/01/2025 19:38

There’s a whole section on weight loss injections with lots of threads with useful info

Thanks @FrenchFancie , I was just reading another thread in chat where Mounjaro was mentioned so just posted on here. I’ll have a nosy on the weight loss board, thanks so much for the point in the right direction.

No personal experience but a colleague is on it to help with his diabetes control. The only thing he's mentioned is it makes him feel quite nauseous, which for him is problematic as he obviously needs to eat to keep his sugars at the correct levels, and the nausea makes him not want to, but other than that he says it's really helped. Unfortunately he's having issues with supply at the moment.

Mumof1andacat · 02/01/2025 20:12

I tried it, but I couldn't manage the side effects of diarrhoea. I couldn't leave the house and had to be off work, so it wasn't for me.

InfoSecInTheCity · 02/01/2025 20:21

I on Mounjaro for T2 diabetes.

Been on it since beginning of Sept, lost 3 stone, glucose levels are perfect, no side effects at all.

I would say that it is important to take the opportunity to get control of your diet. It works in 2 ways

1 - it increases insulin sensitivity so you break down glucose more effectively making it less likely that your body will store excess glucose as fat

2 - it slows down your digestion so you have more time to process the flood, this also means you feel fuller for longer and therefore have less appetite.

If you eat rich, high fat, stodgy food it's going to sit in your guts and make you feel awful, might also make you sick or give you sulpherous burps.

I eat high protein, low carb, things like casserole, veg soups, cottage cheese (Longley Farms brand, trust me it's the only one worth eating), boiled eggs......

Can't comment on post-MJ maintenance as not there yet.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 20:39

@Perpetuallyperfect I've been on it for 6 months for weight loss and will be on it for possibly the same again. I feel totally normal, other than the intended effects which are feeling fuller longer on smaller meals and not being interested in snacking or over eating. I have had a couple of instances of digestive issues, not for long and sorted with OTC treatments and being considerate about what I'm eating. I find I seem to prefer protein and vegetables over carbs and fatty food. The thought of fatty and sugary foods is actually a bit repellant now.

Mounjaro has only been available since the early part of the year, so maintenance is still a new-ish thing. Some people want to take an ongoing low dose, some have stopped taking it but may start again if necessary. It's an individual case by case thing. I know that having around a year to think about maintenance, that it isn't going to be a surprise to me. I know I need to plan for maintenance as much or more than I've planned for losing the weight.

The most recent research showed that those that were switched to a placebo regained some weight, but not all that they originally lost. That's on average of course, and they didn't know they were on a placebo. I think being aware of it and planning for it would affect the ability to keep the weight off.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 02/01/2025 20:57

Hi @Perpetuallyperfect

This is the response I posted on another very similar question on here, I think it is just as relevant in response to your post:

I have spent my entire adult life losing and re-gaining the same 5 - 6 stone. Menopause just makes it all so much harder.
I have tried every diet known to man since the age of 11 (thanks DM)

I also have PCOS, raised cholesterol and a family history of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
5 years ago I gave up weighing myself because of the effect it was having on my mental health (which I take a high dose of antidepressants for and have done for around 30 years.)

I gained weight - I did not know how much but went from a size 12/14 to size 18. I tried 16:8 for a while which I really liked doing and I think that held my weight steady while I did it (no increase in clothing sizes during that time.)

Then about 9 months ago I stumbled over a thread on the weight loss boards here about weight loss injections.

I read the threads and lurked for months - I must have been living under a rock because I wasn't even aware that weight loss injections existed!

The cost concerned me as £200 a month seemed way out of budget for me.

I started using Mounjaro at the beginning of August - I used a code from another Mumsnetter to make the first pen affordable.

It has been the best thing I've ever done - I'm just over 3 stone down now - I'd like to lose another stone.
I now know what it's like to not have my life controlled by food.
I'm saving the £200 pen cost each month on my grocery/food bill easily. I also had very few side effects luckily - the support from the threads really helped in that respect as I felt completely aware of what side effects I may have and lots of suggestions from those who had already been there to help avoid and deal with those side effects.

I'm aware that there could be long term health implications of the drugs, but from the research I have read so far the risks look less than the risk to me personally from remaining obese.

DM's weight went up and down her whole adult life - she tried all the diets - even amphetamines in the 80's.

She ended up with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart problems. She now has Alzheimer's.

MJ is thought to have protective effects against dementia and a fair few cancers.

I'm also happy to use MJ for maintenance for the rest of my life if I need to - kind of like the antidepressants I take.

I don't want to end up taking metformin, insulin, statins, blood pressure meds, and the plethora of other drugs DM takes, and I hope that maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle will give me the best chance of avoiding needing those drugs. I know from a lifetime's experience that I cannot do that by myself - for whatever reason I just can't - it's certainly not from lack of effort.

I'm not saying that you should use weight loss injections - but for me it genuinely has changed my life. Have a lurk on the threads on the weight loss boards, do some research for yourself and see what you think - it's an option that you have if you want it.

Feel free to DM me if you want to ask anything. And whatever you decide to do I wish you success!

LittleBitAlexa · 02/01/2025 21:10

Yes @JamieFrasersSassenach your response perfectly echoes my own experience . I've been on MJ for 4 months and have lost 2 stone. I need to lose another 2. It feels like a miracle that it's within my grasp. I feel quite emotional about how life changing it is.

Perpetuallyperfect · 02/01/2025 21:18

Thanks so much for
replies so far everyone. Particularly @JamieFrasersSassenach, yours is a really helpful response and actually made me
feel
quite emotional. I’ve spent all my adult life being the funny fat one and as I approach peri the health aspect of my weight is really on my mind. There is a history of T2 in my family as well as heart disease in later years.

My children are coming to an age where they are conscious of appearances and that is also on my mind, I don’t want to embarrass them.

I know this will probably sound really odd and contradictory but I also have in the back of mind that I don’t want to “miss”
food-it’s such a big part of my life and I’m definitely influenced by emotions (happy or sad, food is a treat) when eating and I think I’m scared about how MJ will affect that-does that sound really weird?!

OP posts:
JamieFrasersSassenach · 02/01/2025 21:34

@Perpetuallyperfect not weird at all, I totally understand that feeling - who/what will I be without food???

I think that, for me, losing the food noise has been a revelation - I don’t miss food at all. If I want something I have it - to be honest most of the time I don’t want anything ‘naughty’ and if I do have something it will be one biscuit not the whole packet. What I do find though is that I really enjoy what I do eat - and as soon as I feel full I simply stop eating. The cravings simply don’t exist any more. I enjoy going out for meals much more than I ever have before - knowing that I can choose something from the menu and enjoy it until I’m full (not stuffed, just comfortably full), rather than thinking how much can I get away with eating before everyone else thinks I’m a pig! If I’m happy/sad/angry/worried I simply don’t think about food - it doesn’t cross my mind as an option anymore. But before MJ I most definitely ate every feeling I had!!

Honestly, it’s like witchcraft - it’s hard to describe how much my relationship with food has changed, but I love it!

Motnight · 02/01/2025 21:36

@Perpetuallyperfect for me good food is still a treat 😁. I just eat less of it. I have gone off crisps and chocolate almost completely, and will choose healthier options than I used to, but still enjoy my food. I've been on MJ since August.

zerofucksgivenever · 07/01/2025 07:17

Morning
I've taken my first dose......how long does it take to "feel" any different with regards to food noise......nothing happening yet, still feel hungry !

12purplepencils · 07/01/2025 07:32

Varies but I think for me the effect of the jab peaks about 24-48 hrs after I took it.
But I’m one of the people who didn’t feel much at all in the first couple of weeks on 2.5. It does accumulate though.

Portabella · 07/01/2025 07:50

Following this with interest.
I have just ordered Mounjaro after trying Wegovy for 2 weeks last year. The side effects for me on Wegovy made me give up so hoping to have a little better luck on Mounjaro.

Are you ladies who are on it and have a lot to lose taking/doing anything to try and avoid saggy skin especially on your face?

Was thinking of talking collagen.
