Weight loss injections/treatments

Can you help me to decide whether to go for it?

I'm dithering. A friend owns a clinic that offers weight loss injections as one of their services. I saw him just before Christmas and he's lost 4 stone and looks incredible. I was enthused and decided to sign up and completed all the assessments. Due to the Christmas break nothing has been ordered so I'm not yet committed.

I'm 5ft 10 and 190lbs (13st 5). BMI is 27 so not in the danger area but not great. I have hypertension which I take tablets for and it's now under control.

I run four times a week and am training for another marathon. I understand calories in/out, the need for protein, how to fuel properly etc. I just struggle to actually follow the rules because I like shit food and I eat too much of it.

I've been overweight my whole adult life but not enough to be forced I to change. I'm a size 14 on top and 16 below. Carry all my weight below my waist to my knees. I'm finding running tough and can't help thinking it would be easier with a fair few lbs off.

I have tried most 'diets' but seem to just stop after a couple of weeks and a few lbs. I need to get past that and really get for and healthy. I'm 54 and on hrt.

Just rambling now really..anyone got any wisdom? Shall I try yet another 'diet' or give the injections a go? Thanks.

Forgot to say, 155lbs brings me to a BMI of around 22 which would be ok. So need a 35lb loss, just over 2 stone.

Your current BMI is 27 so you are not eligible.

I don't know about "the rules", but you seem to have identified the main problem. You would need to really want to change the way you eat, for the long term. Being two stones overweight should not require someone to resort to wli.

Go for it. I will be crucified for saying this but I started Mounjaro on an allegedly healthy BMI but (to me) clearly carrying too much weight. I lost 10lbs on one month of 2.5 (still in healthy BMI) and have been maintaining, even over Christmas, on 1.25.

I was losing about 1/2 lb a month on managing my diet and exercise previously but I lost patience with it all.

Your current BMI is 27 so you are not eligible.

OP has hypertension, so BMI 27 is appropriate.

If you are clinically eligible and sourcing from a legitimate supplier, I can see why it could be very beneficial.

Only you can decide, as there are risks, although the serious ones seem to be very rare and benefits generally far outweigh them.

I'm on MJ and very happy with it. 4.5 stones lost since July. Another 2 to go until goal.

Is this friend running a GPhC registered pharmacy or similar, when you say "clinic"? For starters I'd want to be sure what he was providing was legal and above board.

Then, if your BMI is 27 and you have high blood pressure then you would just meet the prescribing criteria. However, I'd have a serious think about whether wanting to lose a small amount of weight is worth the risks of taking either Mounjaro or Wegovy. To me, it seems like a lot of money and additional risk of side effects when the potential gain is minimal. But obviously it's your choice.

FruitFlyPie · 02/01/2025 11:02

I would say try it. If you get the most common side effects and it doesn't suit, you can just stop. OK you'd feel shit for a few days and waste a bit of money, but that's hardly the end of the world (assuming you can afford it in the first place).

Like you, I wasn't massive but I've been overweight and trying to lose weight my entire life (so 40 years). In a few months, I'm down to a normal weight.

Thanks all, lots to consider.

It is a legit clinic. Have checked into all of that.

Try it for a month - see how you feel? You’ll get people saying you don’t need it for a couple of stone, that you can lose it through other means. But it’s bloody hard to lose a couple of stone if you’re not really heavy to begin with. I only did a week (bmi 28 with high cholesterol) but stopped as I was worried about aggravating an existing condition that flared up. But it was so easy to eat well in that week - I just ate my usual healthy meals but skipped all the unhealthy snacks I’m often tempted by.

these drugs are massive game changers. Society is going to look very different in a few years time.

BookishType · 02/01/2025 14:13

Do it! I have had great success with it. I was overweight but not in the obese range according to BMI. I’ve lost over 40 pounds and feel fantastic. I’m also tall and was a large 14 (verging on 16). I started at 188 pounds and I’m now 142.

I’ve had no side effects whatsoever and it has been incredibly easy.

I’ve spent the last 4 years weighing more than I wanted to and getting slightly fatter each year. I gained and lost a stone repeatedly. Mounjaro has been absolutely perfect for me.

AddictedtoCrunchies · 04/01/2025 19:52

Update. I've decided against it for now.
