Bonus dose - safe or not?

CandyMandy9 · 31/12/2024 14:00

I've just received my first Mounjaro pen and have been reading about the potential extra dose.

The official advice is to not use anything that's left in the pen after the four 'official' doses. But I keep reading about the 'bonus' dose, and using the bit that's left over.

Is it really safe to use? Do the suppliers just want you to buy more by throwing away the last bit? Has anyone had any different/unexpected side effects using the bonus dose?

I want to do things right and not make myself ill. But I also don't want to spend more than needed!

Thanks in advance.

I just bought the syringes from amazon

thesugarbumfairy · 01/01/2025 21:25

I've always done it, and I started in June. I always have a supply of syringes for twist issues. these ones https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles/?attribute_pa_quantity=10]]

Google 1ml 8mm 32G syringes and buy off a UK medical supplier (not amazon) to ensure they are fit for human use.

Pumpkinforever · 02/01/2025 13:59

Got mine from UKMedi. I just wanted 10 not 100. Other suppliers also offer 10. I am going to practice extraction with my broken pen but not use it to jab as it will be over 30 days.

Sorry - another question prompted by a comment on another thread… does your supplier ever ask why you are ordering 5 weekly not 4 weekly? I’m with med express if that makes a difference? Thanks!

noop. I'm with the family chemist

Glad to find this thread.

Daft QQ.... for those of you using syringes to access this bonus dose..... how are you getting access to the liquid?!

SilenceInside · 06/01/2025 17:03

@strongermummy I've not done it myself as I'm a bit phobic of proper needles. But, you access the medication through the red seal at the end of the pen where you normally attach the supplied needle (which also punctures the red seal with the back end of the needle when you attach it).

You should use the same hygiene process of wiping the seal with a swab before puncturing it.

Ladybyrd · 06/01/2025 17:14

I've used every last drop of every pen. Since there's more than one dose left over, it's a good way to step up before moving from 2.5 to 5 etc provided you calculate and measure it properly.

Pushing it through the red bubble on the pen tip.

@SilenceInside I did it with a syringe for the first time on my last injection when the hard twist failed. I was terrified of the syringe and its 8mm needle that I bought previously so over equipped myself with a luer lock syringe and two needles (one to extract and one to inject so no more irrational fear of blunted needles) and it was the same 6mm/fine gauge I was used to using for pen needles (they also do 4mm if you are more used to them) and it didn't look anywhere near as scary as the 8mm syringe did. It was much easier to do than my first pen needle injection and much easier/smoother to use than pushing the dosing knob.

I included links in my post on the >5st thread you are also on if it helps. It looks like the hard twist is no longer working so you could miss out on your next 5th dose if you were using it before. If you can use the kwikpen I am sure you will be able to use the syringe with the size/gauge of needle you are already used to.

SilenceInside · 06/01/2025 17:45

@WeAllHaveWings thank you for all the info on the needles you've used. I might have a look at them online and see how I find the idea of them.

letshavetea · 06/01/2025 18:03

I’ve just finished my fourth pen. Always used a medical swab to clean the rubber bung on the pen and extracted using a 1ml insulin syringe (medical grade from Amazon) with the attached needle. As long as the medicine is extracted with good hygiene procedures observed there is no problem. There’s no way I’m wasting it! Never had any questions asked by my supplier (Oushk) about my order frequency but I’m always a pen ahead in terms of my stock.

Questions1234 · 11/01/2025 15:36

Sorry… me again. How do you know much to inject? Or do you just use everything left in the pen? Thanks!

SilenceInside · 11/01/2025 15:40

A full dose from any pen is 0.6ml. If you're using a syringe, then when you've drawn up the liquid you can see how much there is. If you just want another normal dose from it, you can squirt out any excess liquid till it's at 0.6ml. If you want a higher dose you can calculate the dose from the amount of liquid you have. If you have less than 0.6ml you can also work out what dose that would be based on how many ml of liquid you have.

It's sensible to be very very sure you understand the amounts in ml and how that relates to the dose in mg and what strength pen you have. As well as being sure you understand the simple maths involved in the dose calculations.

Questions1234 · 11/01/2025 15:43

Thank you! So 0.6ml if I want the normal dose, read up and understand the maths if I want to change it (I don’t think I will… at least not now!)

WeAllHaveWings · 11/01/2025 16:43

@Questions1234 This click chart might help. The screenshot starts at a half dose/30 clicks.

Example in red is my current dose 3.75mg from a 5mg pen. 45 clicks/0.45ml.
