Can the Dr prescribe weight loss injections?

What is the criteria?

For example, if I go to my Dr-nhs or private, are they able to prescribe it and I don’t pay full value?

My bmi is 29/30 and I have chronic kidney stones, never used to be like this years ago, was a slim gym girl.

If they’re not able to, are you able to buy it over the counter at the chemist?

My bmi is 35.
My weight has shot up since I was diagnosed as coeliac and with an under active thyroid so I'd also like to know this too.
My weight is making me miserable

Newname71 · 26/12/2024 20:38

You have to have a BMI of over 35 and at least one weight related health condition.

Bumbleebeee · 26/12/2024 20:38

It's not properly available for weightloss yet, only diabetics.
April 2025 is when it's being rolled out but only for people with a BMI over 30 and other issues.

Having said that my friend is on the tier 2 weightloss management course on NHS and has been told it will be about a 2 year wait to get it.

I just buy it in a private prescription

BobbyBiscuits · 26/12/2024 20:40

You'd be better going private if you can afford it. If you're overweight then it's simple to get privately online.

NHS GPs can't give it if not diabetic and you wouldn't be eligible obline with bmi 29

Tandora · 26/12/2024 20:41

It’s very difficult to qualify on the nhs.

You can get a private prescription with a BMI>30 or with a BMI>27 + any of the following conditions : pre-diabetes, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Searchingforthelight · 26/12/2024 20:42

It's a prescribed medication
Not OTC

*private prescription from an online provider- like med express

GrumpyInsomniac · 26/12/2024 20:43

It may depend where in the country you are. Local to me, it can only be prescribed by a Tier 3 weight loss clinic, even with a BMI over 35 and a qualifying condition. And all the nearby Tier 3 services are closed to new referrals so it’s private or nothing.

At your BMI, a NHS GP will not prescribe, so you’ll likely have to go private.

LaPalmaLlama · 26/12/2024 20:44

With a BMI of 30 you can get it privately via any number of private online pharmacies (no consultancy fee). Prices vary but by shopping around and using referral codes you can keep costs down. You will need to pay for it though.

Doggymummar · 26/12/2024 20:44

It still depends on your primary care practice. I was BMI 42, with NAFLD, prediabetic high cholesterol and I wasn't able to qualify so self funded and get emails from my GP saying how well I'm doing ! I'm pretty broke but not dying anymore.

FeegleFrenzy · 26/12/2024 20:45

You’d have to go private and pay full price.

gamerchick · 26/12/2024 20:49

If you have kidney issues, I'm not sure or would be wise anyway OP. You probably should speak to a doctor.

Heyupkiddo · 26/12/2024 20:49

So could I go to my private Dr and pay for that consultation, if she were willing to prescribe it, would I need to pay for the prescription?

Any idea how much it is?

No , you will have to pay for the prescription. There are lots of online pharmacies where you don’t have to pay for the consultation but you always have to pay for the prescription.
It starts off around £150 / month.

magicalmrmistoffelees · 26/12/2024 20:56

You don’t need to pay for a consultation with a private GP, many online pharmacies such as MedExpress or Boots will prescribe if you meet their criteria. It costs around £150-£200 a month.

You don’t pay for a prescription or a consultation. You just pay for the medication. It’s between £150 and £200 a month depending on the dose. So if you need to go up a dose every month to get any benefits then you’ll end up paying £200. Technically every 4 weeks actually, not per month. Though there’s a way to get five weeks worth out of a pen.

KeeKees · 26/12/2024 21:33

You can get codes and get it for around £125 for 4 weeks. BMI needs to be 30 or over.

There are several online pharmacies you can buy it from after filling in a questionnaire. It’s around £150 to £170 a month but if you Google there are usually discount codes (£40 discount in a lot of cases)

But how would they know my bmi if it’s done online?

Is Ozempic the best or are there better ones? Which is the safest?

They presume you're being honest with them when you send your photos of your weight on the scales.

KeeKees · 26/12/2024 21:58

Look up Mounjaro.
