Could a jab help with weight gain medication

A long shot but is anyone on meds that have caused weight gain and tried Ozempic or other?

I'm taking Mirtazapine and a side effect is weight gain, 4st in 6 months for me. As I still need to be on it and it's doing the job it's meant for the weight is not good for general health, I also have bad joint pain, out of breath.

Yes, I am on olanzapine and been on MJ since September. Since had my yearly blood tests and health check up due to the meds and by BP, cholesterol is now normal (was 'high but expected' previously)

Yes I'm on MJ because of all my medication (about 2 to 3 different ones with weight gain as side effect) that caused me to become obese within the last few years. It's the only way I can shift the excess weight and maintain a healthy weight while still on those meds. So I'm looking to stay on Mounjaro for life because of this otherwise the weight will go back on as I'll be on those meds for life too.

My doctor is in support and wishes he could prescribe it to me on the nhs but I don't meet the nhs criteria.

I hope so @ForBrickSnake , this could be life changing for those on these type of meds!

I am also not prescribed via the NHS and paying privately. I found a research paper recently about this and will try and find it to share.

I also noticed this about a mental health charity asking for the meds for those with severe MH conditions

Thank you for this. Like I discussed with my GP - and he agrees with this but his hands are tied - those of us on these meds that cause weight gain should be given meds like Mounjaro alongside them. It's horrible to be treating one illness only to gain another illness.

Yes I am in the same situation. In fact I am using my PIP for the MH condition to fund it which is being reviewed at present, so I am hoping that continues or else will not be able to fund it anymore.

Searchingforthelight · 26/12/2024 15:33

It will definitely help with obesity linked to medication such as mirtazapine.

Oh I'm hoping for you that it comes through too x.

Yes, I am taking mirtazapine. I’m unable to exercise due to mobility problems and chronic pain. I also have Copd and pcos. Mounjaro has really helped me, I’ve lost 4 stone in 30 weeks.

WeAreNumpties · 26/12/2024 21:18

I am really struggling with weight gain on Pregabalin which I have to take for neuropathic pain. In addition to this I have to take steroids which make me very hungry all the time. I know it sounds melodramatic but it's making my life so miserable. I'm not massively overweight yet and I could pay for a private prescription but my understanding is that I can't even do that until I am a lot more overweight. Is that the case?

ForBrickSnake · 26/12/2024 23:34

Thanks for the input. Hopefully one of these will work. Of course mental health especially when debilitating like depression and ocd but I'm in pain let alone other things this could cause- diabetes etc

Just seen this in the updates to the NICE guidance on Mounjaro, the guidance on who it should be aimed at etc

"However, other important comorbidities, for example learning disabilities and severe and enduring mental illness, should also be considered in the interim commissioning guidance and prioritisation statement"

By BMI is now 34 down from 40 though so not sure if it would apply. I might be sharing this with my GP
