Tirzepatide approved for sleep apnea in the US

The FDA has approved Zepbound (Mounjaro) for sleep apnea for those with obesity. Mounjaro and Zepbound are brand names for the same drug, tirzepatide.

This is great news and not surprising as I found my snoring and sleep apnea pretty much disappeared on MJ within the first two weeks of being on it. I've only seen two other people mention they've stopped snoring too on MJ but it seems it's not a rare occurrence for this approval to happen. There will be more uses for Tirzepatide in the future, I'm sure as more trials are taking place.

It's a matter of time before this comes to the UK too. Mounjaro is really a wonder drug (with side effects of course, as any other drug) whether some people like to hear it or not.

I'm interested in the other results people are experiencing too, such as inflammation reduction. I no longer want to drink alcohol which I think is also being studied?

TirzepatideUser · 21/12/2024 17:21

Yes, GLP-1s are in trials for alcohol and opioid addiction, treating cardiovascular diseases, etc.

I have also stopped snoring, am awaiting a sleep study after Christmas but much more positive about that now.

That is wonderful news! I believe Liraglutide is in Saxenda (Victoza in the US).

I can imagine if you are working in this field then it's quite exciting- it seems to be unlocking a variety of treatments. Figuring out how and why must be fascinating.

Pennyplant19 · 21/12/2024 18:34

Oh that's interesting - my husband says I've stopped snoring since starting it!

Splattsagain · 21/12/2024 18:52

My husband also says I've stopped snoring - but I assumed that was due to weight loss as the same thing happened when I dropped a couple of stone using slimming world about 15 years ago.

CatsorDogsrule · 21/12/2024 20:56

My DH and I have separate bedrooms mostly due to his snoring. We are both on MJ, and he has already reached goal, so titrating down.

I rather like having my own room (with the ensuite to myself,) so hope he doesn't read about this and have designs on moving back in 😁!

SevernWonders · 22/12/2024 22:15

DP says I have stopped snoring, like a PP I put it down to weight loss but perhaps it was more than that.

Shimmyshimmyshimmy · 22/12/2024 22:20

Hang on. If it’s prescribed for apnea for those with obesity then surely the mechanism by which it reduced it is losing weight - not some other magical function!

And this is the US. Private medical needs lots of ‘approved reasons for prescription’ it doesn’t mean anything

No. It reduces inflammation, its way more complex than just weight loss.

@Queenofthejabs have you read the link. It literally says the mechanism for stopping apnea is achieved through weight loss.

I love Mounjaro. Am on it myself but inflammation does not cause apnea.

I stopped snoring within three weeks of my first dose of MJ before I had lost any significant weight. I have been much slimmer and still snored i n the past so it's down to something more than weight loss.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 23/12/2024 00:07

Wow. I should be starting soon.

Will we all end up on it??

that’s fantastic for you. But that is anecdotal and if you read into the research of the study (performed by Eli Lily who make Mounjaro) you’ll see that they explicitly state the effects are caused by weight loss. Which is brilliant in its own way. But not the same as a cure for apnea whether there is weight loss or not.

I’m also surprised it’s nothing more than weight loss. As I also had mine stop very quickly.

TirzepatideUser · 23/12/2024 09:16

Mine too was before any real weightloss. Just 2 weeks in (a few lbs loss at the most)...and I'd been snoring pretty much my whole life even before becoming obese, although it got worse with weight gain.

If they don't know already, they'll probably find out with more studies that there's more to it than just weightloss as this has been the stories I've heard rather than after people lost a significant amount of weight. Perhaps it's about different kinds of snoring issues.

It's obvious weightloss would significantly affect snoring, and that is a quicker way of getting approval for the treatment especially if other studies are still inconclusive or not been carried out yet. It doesn't mean there isn't any other reason.

They only measured apnea results after a year of them being on Mounjaro
