Is there any point in going up to 10 if I have suppression at 7.5?

I've been on Mounjaro since the start of June and have lost over 18 kgs. I want to lose about 10 kgs more. The weight loss has been very slow and steady, but I've had a few periods where I haven't lost anything, sometimes for over a couple of weeks.

I did one month on 2.5, one month on 5, then the rest of the time on 7.5. I take it every 9 days and don't really have any side effects, in terms of sickness etc. I have pretty full suppression and could easily eat nothing all day. If I eat too much (which is still a lot less than I did eat) then I suffer as a consequence, so that only rarely happens.

I haven't had a drink in six months. No chocolate, cake etc. I haven't felt I wanted anything - it never occurs to me, despite that being a daily habit beforehand - so don't feel deprived.

But now I'm in another period where I'm not losing anything, even though I'm eating under 1,000 calories and a lot less than I've eaten in the past. I have to pay for another month soon and don't know what to do. I got an email from my pharmacist, Bolt, saying that 7.5 is not a maintenance dose and that I should go up to 10. My sister was quite ill on 10 and as I don't have any sickness etc on 7.5 and do have good suppression, I can't see the point of it.

My sister says that this is because 7.5 hasn't been tested, whereas 5 and 10 have been, but if 10 has been tested and is OK, why would 7.5 not be OK? It doesn't make sense to me.

However, if it would shift my weight, I'd be happy to do it, albeit worried about side effects.

If you are taking Mounjaro and have gone up from 7,5 to 10, what do you think?

Apologies for the length!

I'm in a similar situation although with a bit less to lose before getting to goal. I moved up quite quickly to 7.5mg and have suppression etc as you describe. My weight loss has slowed to about 1lb a week on average.

Whereas earlier I felt compelled to move up to the next dose, for some reason I'm content to stick at 7.5mg. I think partly I've accepted 1lb a week is actually fine, and also it feels like a decent dose without my suffering side effects and I don't want to "push my luck".

Just wanted to add that when my weight loss stalled I tried eating more as I'd been tending towards eating less as I was worried I'd stop losing at all - when I took my eye off what I was consuming (stopped calorie counting, stopped daily weighing, stopped being obsessed with how things were going) things started to move.

@MounjaroOnMyMind I am currently on 7.5mg, on my third pen at 7.5 and I'm not going to move up to 10mg yet. Like you I have good suppression and no side effects so I don't see the need to move up to 10mg. I would only consider moving up if I found I was beginning to want to snack and to eat larger quantities.

There's a lot of confusion over this idea of "maintenance" doses. In the clinical trials the participants moved up the doses until they reached one they couldn't tolerate and then moved back down to the dose below. Then, the outcomes for those who were on 5mg, 10mg and 15mg for the remainder of the trial duration were analysed. So those are the doses that (sone) prescribers want you to move onto, because there's clinical evidence of their efficacy. But there's no clinical need for them to do that, it's their own decision for their own prescribing processes.

Asda who I am with are quite happy for me to continue on with 7.5mg.

Would it not make sense to move to 7.5mg weekly instead of every 9 days, and see if that makes a difference to your weight loss, rather than moving up to 10mg straight away?

Harrumphju · 10/12/2024 18:54

I'd change suppliers before I'd let one force/bother me to stay on a dose or go up a dose when I'm quite happy with my current dose. Lots of suppliers that are happy to let you stay on the dose that's working for you, not go up a "maintenance dose".

But I still have suppression after 9 days, so I can't see the point in taking it every 7 days. I might try that, though, if I don't lose anything this week.

Yes, I agree, but I've been really happy with Bolt. I'll ask them to call me - my sister had a good discussion with the pharmacist about it.

The thing is that I'm eating as much as I want to eat - most of the time I couldn't face eating more.

I'll just have to wait and see, I guess!

Fair enough. A discussion with the pharmacist is always good. Hopefully they sort out a good option for you and agree to let you stay on the dose that's working for you.

Orangesandlemons77 · 10/12/2024 22:35

What about 5mg every 7 days instead of 7.5mg every 9?

MounjaroOnMyMind · 12/12/2024 17:19

I think I'd rather do that, @Orangesandlemons77 than go up to 10 mg, but it's annoying if I can't just keep going on 7.5 for a bit longer, given I don't have side effects on it and I'm losing weight.

I'm staying on 7.5 as I had awful diarrhoea on 10mg.
I've had no problem ordering more 7.5 pens.

Doggymummar · 12/12/2024 18:01

I went up to 10 this week on Wednesday, I was ravenous yesterday and ended up eating a portion of rice. Today not hungry at all. No additional effects over 7.5mg. I've gone up monthly, I stated in September
