Are some fruits/veg better than others?

Are there any fruits or veg that are better nutritionally for you than others?
Different internet searches say different things.
I know the ideal is a variety but I was just wondering if some were like the 'Gods' of the fruit and veg world.

I suspect different MNers will say different things too......

What more are you looking for that you haven't already read, probably from people much more qualified than your average MNer?

Just asking the question to try and gain some clarity.

I've read that you should stop all fruit apart from berries if trying to lose weight.

Vegetables - dark green ones are the best.

Thank you. I don't want to stop fruit and think it's a bad mindset to think fruit is 'bad'. Just wanting to ensure I stick to the most nutritious if that makes sense so I am using calories wisely.

I'm not saying fruit is bad! Just that if trying to lose weight then the recommendation is to stop it because of the sugar content and opt for all types of berries instead.

JingleB · 08/12/2024 11:18

Obviously some are more nutritious than others, and some fruit are high in sugar. It depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

If you’re trying to regulate your blood sugar, juice or a berry smoothie is a bad idea. But handy if you’re trying to get lots of vitamin C for your cold.

Dark green vegetables are absolute powerhouses of vitamins, folic acid, iron, all that good stuff. Beans and other legumes are great for protein and fibre.

Strawberries raspberries blueberries have the least calories, bananas probably the most fibre, pomegranates and avocados and goji berries are considered super foods. What are you looking for, nutritionally speaking?

Sorry, I wasn't having a go at you. Sorry if it came across that way. It's just that I've definitely heard many people class fruit as 'bad' when I believe it's really needed for health.

In tes of what I'm looking for, I would say high vitamin C, good vitamin content, antioxidants and possibly a source of fibre and calcium.

Kiwi fruit probably cover most of those requirements. I'm not keen on the green ones but there are gold/yellow ones that you can get that I find more palatable. Slightly higher calories than the green but not by much.

JingleB · 08/12/2024 11:35

Then prioritise vegetables. Tomatoes, peppers, brassicas, legumes, root vegetables, leafy salads (but not iceberg lettuce, which is basically crunchy water). You will get what you need there.

midgetastic · 08/12/2024 11:41

Fruit that has lots of sugar includes bananas and grapes - otherwise whatever is going cheap is totally fine and good for you - and bananas are great if you are about to do some exercise - much better than a busicuit or the like

Cauliflower and or broccoli most days. Love the taste. Taken the place of chips, rice, pasta etc. Avocado is nice but I get the smashed one in tubs as some avocados are hard when eating. Avoiding fruit except Every few weeks raspberries with a bit of full fat yogurt as a treat

Vegetables and fruits of all colors are good. More veg than fruit is better. Bitter veg is excellent for gut health as well as fermented veg. Soluble fibre creates a gel type substance that helps upset tummies and bulks poop. Insoluble fibre attracts water to the bowel and is good for constipation. Both good for cholesterol.
Lots of veg/fruit such as sweet potato has natural retinol, vitamin A.

Basilsage · 08/12/2024 17:53

Sauerkraut is good, agree
