Private prescription via private (eg BUPA) GP

We have BUPA, and with that comes (free) video GP appointments. I was thinking about asking them for a private prescription, and then taking it to Boots etc, as that may be cheaper than the £120+ of having the prescription + medication package that is usually available online.

Has anyone tried this?

Of course, it may well be that they just refer me into the BUPA weight loss service. Which is £££s.

No but I would be interested if you found out! I have Bupa cover with work.

Not al private GPs will prescribe for weight loss. We have a private GP (not BUPA, one you actually see) and until a couple of weeks ago they didn't prescribe mountjaro even though ours knew DH was on it and had talked about it

I have also wondered re. a private clinic, not necessarily Bupa, if it might be the same price or cheaper and also easier to get long-term maintenance with (if necessary). Do you know roughly how much a Bupa clinic was off the top of your head? I assume it is more expensive but not sure how much. I would also prefer to keep my NHS out of the loop and a private clinic might be willing to do that.

Sorry if this is slightly adjacent topic OP.

You still have to meet the criteria for prescribing but it looks like it will be a better monitored treatment than online pharmacy.
You should check your cover to see if your insurance covers the plan or whether it is an add on.
But at £99 for first consultation it is very reasonable. I don’t think that the meds will be any cheaper though.

Having dug around a little it says that Bupa GPs are not allowed to prescribe weight loss drugs unless it is through their weight loss programme. It wouldn’t make sense for them to side step a service they already have set up and undercut themselves.

Ah, thanks for digging around. I’ll save myself some time and not bother :)

It’s £99 for the appointment. Then 225-345 a month. It’s halfway down this page https://www.bupa.co.uk/health/payg/weight-management-plan
