Reduction in pain - do we know why?

I’ve been on MJ since September and, like many others, I’ve noticed a massive reduction in pain levels. I’m not totally pain free as I have RA and FM but it’s significant and definitely linked to WLI.

Does anyone know why this is a thing? What is it about MJ that impacts other aspects such as pain, mood etc?

Very curious?

Could it be related to eating less sugar, so less inflammation in the body in general?

Losingthetimber · 02/12/2024 07:06

Mounjaro is known to reduce inflammation, so I’d assume it’s the reduction in inflammation that’s reduced your pain levels. Nice bonus 😍

Your post is way too vague to respond to really. It could be a placebo effect, it could be an effect of losing weight and having less strain on your body from obesity

My pain and inflammation massively reduced after my first injection so it's nothing to do with weightloss or eating less sugar. My rheumatologist has read that these jabs have an anti-inflammatory effect and I was the first patient he'd seen who has taken WLI and has experienced this. He was very interested and has been doind further research! My RA is in complete remission at the moment. I was so disabled in the summer due to severe pain and inflammation. On 21st August I took my first jab and a few days to a week later I was no longer in pain. There is lots of information out there on this. You will get people who say we were in pain and suffering as a result of being obese and having a terrible diet, but this was not the case. I was obese because of my fibro and RA. I had a BMI of 30 and I now have a BMI of 22. My quality of life massively improved from my first injection and has been continuing to do so since.

My hot swollen ankles and feet disappeared within 2 weeks of starting MJ. My blood pressure has also dropped significantly (from 140/90 as last years annual review to 120/80 this year - at home it is even less with an average of 101/74)

I have read MJ has positive cardiovascular and inflammation effects.

I also read one facebook post this weekend where someone who had stopped using MJ 3 weeks previously, had maintained the same eating habits, but found their swollen feet and ankles had returned and they had put on 5lbs which they think is water retention again, which might point to an underlying cardiovascular problem which MJ is either supporting or masking.

It is a concern for me that after I have (hopefully) achieved a healthy weight, these problems I assumed were purely weight related and my Dr wasn't interested in may return. But maybe once I am not fat they might be more open to further investigation....

It also makes me think MJ might be featuring in my life permanently and not just for weight loss.

I noticed this almost immediately, which is a welcome side effect. I used to suffer with painful back and hips and rarely do now unless I've overdone it.

I worry about coming off it and it returning, but then -60lbs down will hopefully have a positive effect as less pressure on my body carrying less weight.

I noticed the cankles reduced significantly - I am now the owner of normal looking ankles and whilst I still have creaky joints I’m sure my body is relieved not to be carrying around the extra kgs. Surely this must have an impact on pain ? Also diet, I’m not super healthy but I’m more consistent and eating nutrient dense food.
I lifted my two heaviest dumbbells yesterday to do deadlifts and realised they were the sum and total of my current weightloss - that was a sobering moment.

Interesting views and opinions.

what are people planning to do when they get to their target weight. As MJ won’t be prescribed any longer?

I am at goal with a BMI of 22 and am continuing on a maintenance plan. I have no plans to come off this medication whilst it continues to improve my quality of life.

I have had what I have always Ed a dogey shoulder but actually think is arthritis since my late teens. I manage the pain with NSADS and ice packs. In my 30s I started getting issues with my knees.

All my mums and their siblings are riddled with arthritis. From my first injection I was pain free for the first time I can remember. I no lo get need to be careful of my shoulder and can just carry a buggy to the car and not end up in pain for days. As others have said the medical reason for this is its anti-inflammatory properties that are currently being investigated for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

For me I can't believe I am pain free and will be staying on a maintence dose for the rest of my life. Side not it also foxed my ADHD, depression and anxiety. This is another reason for me to stay on it.

I’m on 15mg with no appetite reduction, no side effects and sadly still in really bad daily pain due to EDS. It’s made no difference to me from a pain pov.

Sadly there is about 15 percent of people it does not work for. Can I ask why are you still, taking it?

lapuf · 07/12/2024 20:37

I found I hardly noticed my first period on MJ, when usually I have debilitating endometriosis pain (bowel related), it was about 10% of the usual level

kept thinking maybe the next dose would be the dose it works at I guess. I’m nearly at the end of my third 15mg pen. Debating whether or not to continue. I have lost 12kg……but it’s been 8 months and very hard work. I’m still hungry, can eat anything I want without feeling full or sick. I’m obviously trying like mad to eat less and i think the fact I’m spending money is making me eat less! Like I’m determined to have something to show for it 😃

I’d stop if I was you, it feels pointless and the medication has risks, if you’re not losing weight due to it, then don’t increase your risks on top of the risks of obesity and spend the money, you obviously are in the category it doesn’t work for.

you can google but in trials 15 percent of people it had no impact on.

murraymcgill · 08/12/2024 09:27

I have a broken back and FM I started MJ in Nov I have noticed I can walk a little further before the pain starts which I'll take as before I could hardly move without crying so Happy Days here
