Three stone down and want to get fit

I'd love some advice.

I've been on Mounjaro for nearly six months and have lost 3 stone. I have another couple to go. I'm really happy with the results but I really need to get fit.

I am 64 and have a sedentary WFH job. I do barely any exercise. (I know, no need to get angry with me!)

I have osteoporosis in my spine and take meds for that. I also have arthritis in my hips (certainly not helped by being overweight for thirty years). I can't go swimming as I had a bad break in my arm which restricts movement. I know I need to do weight bearing exercises but don't even know what that means.

I can throw a bit of money at this. I do have the time. I'm on holiday next April and would love to have that as my goal.

I'm tempted to throw myself on the mercy of a PT but I'm worried I won't be able to do anything at all in terms of lifting, pushing, etc. I wonder whether to do a month of walking daily before attempting the gym.

Any (kind) advice, please? What would you do in my position?

The idea of taking a class is horrifying - it's not just that I'd be the least fit, I'd be the least fit by a million miles! However, it's something I'd like to do in the future. It's just getting myself to that place.

Have you tried/are near a machine-based Pilates class? If so, while there may be people in the same room as you when you’re doing it, you’ll be doing different things (with the teacher going between you all). I hate most classes but this one is great - and for building up muscles

The problem with David Lloyd is that I've never been able to get a straight answer out of them as to what the monthly fee is. It's a ten mile drive from me, too, compared to my local leisure centre which is a mile away.

£116 for basic membership in Worcester apparently, plus £130 joining fee 😯

@LionAndEmperor13 I would like to go to classes - I'm the same as you and have no colleagues - but I feel I need to be a bit more fit before going to them, to prevent total humiliation.

I started by going to the gym first. I was 118 kgs when I joined last November. I started weightloss in March and I'm now 94 kgs. Going to the gym really focused and motivated me to lose the weight. I really enjoy my gym and have got to know a few people now.

Yoga or pilates are good for flexibility and aching muscles. I often go to a yoga meditation retrest too.
I also like doing the Body Coach HIIT workouts, they've definitely improved my strength and muscle mass. You can follow any videos on YouTube for yoga or HIIT or sign up for the body coach app with full programmes on there. They do bluelight discount.

I've been very unfit and gone back to exercising a couple of times. It really is best to start slow - do some walking, and you quickly get stronger. Then you start to notice you are walking faster, powering up the hills etc and you might be inspired to start Couch to 5 K or whatever is next.

I've been going to various classes at the gym for a few months. At first I always felt like I would be sick. But now I feel strong and great for being fitter.

Once you feel stronger, you will feel more confident.

The problem with David Lloyd is all that cock in the ladies changing room (they have a "use whatever changing room you feel comfortable in" policy).

@MounjaroUser firstly congratulations. I’m on the Mounjaro journey myself and starting to look at exercise habits to build up.

I take myself for a walk everyday. If it’s piddling down I take myself to a supermarket or shopping centre and just wander around under mostly cover! I made a walking group using a local Facebook group. We meet up every Tuesday and do an hour. The accountability helps.

Aquarobics - I go to keep my mum company/accountable. Any movements you struggle with - don’t do or go something different. Just speak to the instructor first. I then do lengths afterwards - maybe in a quieter evening you could use a float under arms/shoulders and mainly propel yourself with your legs?

Someone mentioned Yoga with Adrienne- used her for years and there is something for everyone.

I also do some Glow with Jo workouts. Change and tweak so it works for you. I go at a slower pace if I need it. https://youtube.com/@growwithjo?si=tOoPs4R7EzLHjrVD

good luck!
