Mounjaro - what am I doing wrong?

mayaknew · 12/11/2024 08:53

I've been on mounjaro for 10 weeks. I've only lost 6lbs. And those 6lbs was in the one two week period where I was ill after moving up to 5mg. Actually I originally lost 9lbs but put 3 back on.

I do feel suppression and I definitely am eating far less but I only lost weight the 2 weeks I was eating nothing at all. I don't know what else to do.

Water really is so important in weight loss. On another thread someone gave an excellent explanation of how our fat cells deplete when we are in a calorie deficit, but first they fill with water.

If you like hot drinks, could you try having hot water with a slice of lemon/ginger?

I know it’s terrible for the environment but I like drinking water from a plastic bottle out of the fridge, I can find water in a glass has a funny smell that I find off putting.

Also consider upping fruit and veg with a high water content, like cucumber or watermelon.

Littleannoyingperson · 15/11/2024 10:07

I think maybe you need to make an appt with your doctor op.

I think that putting on weight, and not just a little, but several pounds, whilst on a calorie-controlled diet of 1,200 calories per day is a symptom that needs investigating, and I would ask for a different GP if you've been dismissed by your current one. It would probably help to have detailed food diaries for a period of at least a week to evidence what you're saying when you see them, as well as perhaps daily weighing during that period. Obviously with every single item of food and drink weighed/measured and counted.

I’m in two minds op.part of me thinks you’re taking the piss. Everyone knows what you’re saying is not humanly possible, including yourself . Or you’re highly deluded and lying about what you eat and drink over an average week. Even to yourself.

of course if yoh go to a doctor and say I’m 4.5 stone over weight, eat an average of 1k calories a day and am gaining weight, they are not going to beleive you, even thyroid problems could not explain why you are the only human to have ever lived who defies medical science. Which is what you’re posting.

so assuming you’re not taking the piss then the only explanation is over the course of a week you eat and drink much more than you’re admitting. You sometimes eat bigger portions. Mindlessly snack, have calorific drinks. And don’t count it, it might be on a Saturday evening, or picking at left overs, or a penchant for full fat caramel lattes, I don’t know.

however the simple fact is there is something you’re not saying or admitting to. You are not defying medical science.

it reminds me of the over eaters program years ago, where this woman swore blind she ate very few calories a day and when filmed you could see her mindlessly eating Mars bars. I’m sure you’re not doing that, but you’re not telling the whole truth either about what you consume.

FlappingMadly · 15/11/2024 11:40

Op, are you measuring oils you use for cooking, butter you put on bread, dressings, mayonnaise, everything? Are you itemising every single thing you eat and drink?

WorriedRelative · 15/11/2024 14:33

I would suggest reducing your carbohydrate intake. Focus on protein and avoid bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereal.

So instead of the weetabix have a boiled egg. Have your chicken with salad or veg rather than on a bagel.

I struggle to lose weight without reducing carbohydrates, and that isn't uncommon. You could eat much more and get more nutrients for your calories this way.

Fatbottomgardener · 15/11/2024 14:44

I am no expert which is why I am the size I am. But since being on MJ I have cut carbs and sugar easily, ramped up fruit such as apples and berries, and eat a ton of veg along with protein.

Looking at what you said you eat I would doubt you are getting the nutrients/vitamins needed. Read the threads and see what others are doing.

IrisPallida · 15/11/2024 16:05

Do you have PCOS, OP? Or a thyroid condition?

winterdarkness · 15/11/2024 20:59

There's not much protein in the lunch you've listed, except for the chicken but I doubt you had a full breast in a wrap.

I would start by eating more protein and fewer carbs

Caplin · 15/11/2024 22:31

I have started MJ but I’m also doing weight watchers which has a GLP-1 setting. It prioritises nutrition goals of how much protein, fruit/veg and water you should have, plus exercise, but also points tracking to check you aren’t overeating. It would amaze you the ‘little’ things which can push you way over you daily calories. The database is pretty huge so tracking on your phone is mega easy.

Rockdaylia44 · 08/03/2025 15:53

I'm not having any luck with it in calorie deficit but no loss in 2 weeks

FknOmniShambles · 08/03/2025 16:02

Hi OP,
I've had success with MJ so far (32lb in 9 weeks) and all the way through I've used MFP to track calories. You have to be brutal - butter, oil, snacks, etc. My daily calorie intake tends to be 1200 or so. It's a faff at times, but it works. If you're not honest about what you log, it's easy to think you're eating healthily whilst unwittingly sabotaging yourself.
If you're really in a calorie deficit, you really should be losing weight.

AmythestBangle · 08/03/2025 16:29

You mentioned drinking juice, are you putting that into your app? Juice can be very high in (pretty empty) calories, its not a very good idea.

Another vote here for Nutracheck, it is very easy if do it absolutely strictly day in day out and you WILL lose, no doubt at all. Set it to track protein as well. The barcode scanner is great.

Weepixie · 08/03/2025 16:38

Op, I’d plan a days eating on your calorie allowance then eat it every day for a week. I’ve done it a few times as a reset and each time I’ve done it I’ve realised I was actually eating more than I thought.

doing this means you only have to measure one days worth of food and you really do know just what you’ve been eating.

AmythestBangle · 08/03/2025 16:45

I've lost 21lb in 2 months being strict on Nutracheck (have stayed on 5mg MJ for this month as my suppression is high). I stick to 1200 cals (Nutracheck is connected to my Fitbit and on days when I do more walking I do get to eat a little more if I want). There is no way you can stick to it fully and not lose.

This. None of us can help you because nothing you are saying makes logical sense

Threads had a wee revival so I will update.

About a month after I started that thread my weight loss started to kick in again and I've been losing about 1-2lbs per week ever since with the odd week of no loss here and there.

Still no further forward about why I wasn't losing for those few months though!!

shrinkingthiswinter · 09/03/2025 19:24

Hi OP, congratulations on getting it going! I'm glad it's working for you now.

What people said about making sure you're getting protein and vitamins does hold true, though, if you're still eating as described. You'll be fuller on less with more protein and your health will thank you for upping the fruit and veg.

Might a clear whey drink be an alternative to Red Bull? Or coffee with chocolate protein powder in? I have that and it's amazing. Feels luxurious. Just under 100 cals, no sugar, a good chunk of protein.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 09/03/2025 19:29

mayaknew · 12/11/2024 14:28

This was yesterday:

Red bull 160cals

chicken bagel 450cals

Cereal bar 82cals

2 Weetabix 250cals

This is fairly typical as I had a big lunch I didn't want any dinner so I had some Weetabix after coming in from walking the dog.

Today so far I've had beans on toast and that's all. I will start tracking as of today and see how I get on.

I mean your food quality is awful, like awful… but you must know that. There’s barely a whole food in there

i lost 2/2.5kg pm and have lost 35kg total over 12m

sort out your nutrition and the scales will move faster

Jjff89 · 09/03/2025 19:39

My suggestion would be to calorie count using Nutracheck I have lost 2 stone in 7 weeks currently on 5mg. I walk daily and drink 3 liters of water.

Rockdaylia44 · 16/03/2025 20:10

4th week on 2.5 not lost one lb so upset no food suppression at all

BeaTwix · 16/03/2025 20:57

@LivingLaVidaBabyShower that's pretty harsh.

Could you make suggestions rather than pile on?

@mayaknew I really struggle with eating decent food. I started trying to reduce my UPFs last year. I have issues with texture (Ie. I don't like eating certain textures - uncooked tomatoes are a nightmare for me, as are orange segments/ fresh mango) and partly a time issue.

The Rukmini Iyer roasting tin books have been transformative for me. I eat so many more vegetables now than I used to (I bulk prepare lunch boxes for example and freeze them minus salad leaves which I add in the mornings) but I'm still struggling with protein intake.

You do have to watch though as some of her recipes are hugely calorific/ carb heavy. If you've got a library local to you try borrowing some cook books to see what you get on with.

Would it be easier to drink carbonated water? If so consider a soda stream.

Jjff89 · 17/03/2025 16:13

@BeaTwix in the nicest way possible it seems to be your diet and the types of foods you are eating.

Mounjaro isn't a magic fix. If yoy just eat the same types of foods as before you won't lose weight.

I am on week 8 now, 5mg, and have lost 30lbs. I've gone from 17 stone to 14 stone 12lbs.

I think as best as you can you eed to clean up what you are eating or you are paying for nothing IMO.

BeaTwix · 17/03/2025 16:59

@Jjff89 I’m not the OP nor am I asking for you to critique my diet.

I posted to point out that a critical pile on without an helpful suggestions was unlikely to be beneficial for the OP.
