Mounjaro or Wegovy

Which did you choose and why?

OP posts:
WeGoSlow · 11/11/2024 16:43

Wegovy, because when I started taking it 20 months ago Mounjaro wasn't available yet.
Wegovy has worked brilliantly for me and I've lost nearly 10 stone, so I've not had any reason to change from it.

Caffeinequeen91 · 11/11/2024 19:14

Thanks for replying. I’m just not sure which to go for.

Mounjaro seems to be the one most people go for now. From what I've heard, It's meant to have slightly better results, slightly less side effects and is cheaper.

HydrangeaBush · 11/11/2024 20:30

Following ... not sure i can afford any of it mind.

doodleschnoodle · 11/11/2024 20:32

Mounjaro has been shown to be more effective, so I don't think there's any reason to go for Wegovy at this point if you're just starting out, unless it's a significant amount cheaper (I don't actually know).

ChocHotolate · 11/11/2024 20:50

I believe that Wegovy is licences for weight loss use whereas Monjaro is licenced for Type 2 diabetes, although both are use for the same thing in reality. Legally the prescription will be slightly different but this is an issue for the prescriber and dispenser not the consumer. Personally, I think monjaro has won the “popularity” competition and is the name that most will go for

Sleepthief · 11/11/2024 20:54

@ChocHotolate Simone more knowledgeable than me will be along I'm sure, but Mounjaro is licensed for weight loss in the UK, while Ozempic is only licensed for Diabetes. Semaglutide is sold for weight loss in the Uk under the name Wegovy...

Sleepthief · 11/11/2024 20:55

*Someone, obviously. Who may or may not be called Simone 🤪

Snozzlemaid · 11/11/2024 20:56

Wegovy is semaglutide, Mounjaro is tirzepatide.
Both are licensed to be prescribed for weight loss.
Mounjaro has been found to have better results with fewer side effects.

EveryDayisFriday · 11/11/2024 21:01

Wegovy (weight loss) & Ozempic (diabetes) are both Semaglutide. Mounjaro / Zepbound are tirzepatide.
They seem to be mostly the same thing GLP1 but MJ has been shown to be more effective.

I've been on MJ for 3 weeks and lost over half stone, it took me months of deliberating and now I'm really happy I did it.

That’s not right, mounjaro is indeed licensed for diabetes , it is now also licenced for weight loss, and it is going through final testing to be approved for cardiovascular health and kidney disease. So you can have it prescribed in different doses for any of these things if appropriate

CagneyNYPD1 · 11/11/2024 21:05

I started Wegovy in September. Was refused MJ due to past problems with my thyroid. So playing safe with Wegovy as it has a longer testing history.

HydrangeaBush · 11/11/2024 21:15

I'd love to see if the NHS will prescribe for those of us morbidly obese but I suspect it's a way a way.

ChocHotolate · 11/11/2024 21:42

I stand corrected, thank you everyone

It is available on the nhs for those with a bmi over 40, and I think possibly other health conditions, ie sleep apnea , high cholesterol etc, not sure on that though, but defo available, however you need to go through the weight management clinics, doctors can’t prescribe. And the weight management clinics have a very long waiting list and of course no guarantee you’d be prescribed, there will be those who have been with the clinic for a long time, and they’d want you to try other things first.

HydrangeaBush · 12/11/2024 05:56

It isn't in my area ( I am over 40bmi). Our tier 3 leads to surgery but with long waits.

Tier 2 is lifestyle advice.

TheSilkWorm · 12/11/2024 05:59

I tried wegovy after having success on ozempic before the boom but didn't find wegovy worked as well and made me constipated. I then went on mounjaro when it came out and have found it brilliant. Some side effects still but no constipation 😆 and it works for weight loss.

Are you sure? As it was approved for the nhs about 6 weeks ago. Are you on tier 3 and asked them?

HydrangeaBush · 12/11/2024 06:09

I might go back to my Dr. I haven't pushed for tier 3 as wasn't interested in surgery. Googling my area though it's still appears currently only precribable to diabetics and a "review" is due of weight related services in the area. And something about 180days from a TA but no idea what that is!

HydrangeaBush · 12/11/2024 06:10

I thought initially it would only be those with complications /diabetes too?

The nice guidelines are on line, sorry as said I can’t remember exactly what they say,

edit sorry no not just for diabetes, doctors can prescribe for diabetes, it is via the weight loss clinics,

HydrangeaBush · 12/11/2024 06:30

OK so I've found the nice proposals from October. They're still in proposal stage (which is why NHS in my area is talking about a response time of several months before they begin to implement).

It looks like you have to have cardiovascular disease sleep apnea and hypotentian initially.. The 2 of the then 1 of them...

I think it will be years before it will be "just" over 40bmi. I have issues but not those issues.
