Looking Ahead to Life Without MJ - ADHD

I anticipate ceasing MJ around the end of the year. I've been lucky - no problematic side effects, good jounrney, over the moon with the weight loss!

However, the biggest thing - which I cannot believe is even more life changing than the weight loss - is the effect on my ADHD.

I'm late diagnosed (40's) and I've been managing rather than thriving with my symptoms. The difference on MJ is beyond belief. I'm calmer, productive, I can see solutions, I can cope with changes to my routine, I'm exercising, I have mental clarity, and basically, it's like the world is a completely different place and finally, finally, finally, I can navigate it. I keep saying to myself: "this is how being 'normal' must feel every day." It's like magic.

I'm dreading losing it. I'm dreading going back to how I was before.

Has anyone got advice? My Voy MJ coach is great but only equipped to answer questions about WL, not ADHD!

I've not had any ADHD-specific medication before, and I was previously sure I didn't want to. MJ works SO well for me. Has anyone continued on a very low dose to control ADHD symptoms? Has anyone asked their GP about that possibility?

I know I can talk to my GP, but it's a four week wait for a telephone appointment atm, so I'm putting out feelers so I can organize my thoughts a bit.

That's amazing. There are a few of us on a different thread who have noted a change in our ADHD symptoms since starting MJ, and we wanted to track any research or news that comes out about it - have you done any research at all? In true ADHD style I've completely forgotten to do so myself, but I do think there must be a link between how MJ impacts addictive behaviours and the fact that ADHDers are more likely to have addictions themselves.

I've been reading some of the work by Dr Tyna Moore in the states, who 'microdoses' MJ herself, but as a non-clinician living in the UK I don't know how possible that would be for here.

Following this thread with interest, though. I have managed to cope with an incredibly stressful period of my life in a much healthier way than in the past, coinciding with me using MJ. I wonder if/how MJ helped me. I'm feeling incredibly fit and well on the whole, including my mental health, which hasn't always been the case.

Is it possible the change in diet is a link also? (Whilst not dismissing MJ as a direct cause also) there's a lot of research out there showing in the impact of diet on neurological disorders like ADHD and ASD.

Yes, I'm sure the reduction in desire for refined carbs will make a difference.

Do you want to link? Not convinced there is good evidence of a dietary link?

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/11/2024 15:22

MJ has made zero difference to my ADHD.

Oooh can you link to that thread please? I'm on meds for ADHD as well as MJ.

Ah yes, this old chestnut.

FWIW, I'm scatty as ever. I'm medicated but am still forgetting to take my meds!

Intotheoud · 11/11/2024 15:24

@Pezi, am also late diagnosed and unmedicated and have experienced relief of symptoms too. Wasn't sure if that was related to better controlled blood sugar though?

yutulin · 11/11/2024 15:33

I'll bow out, I didn't mean to cause offence, my son has ADHD (and ASD) and diet has a huge impact on him, but for what it's worth we are still seeking medication I'm not saying it's a cure.

Pezi · 11/11/2024 15:38

Thanks for the replies. Tbh, my diet has always been healthy - I'm a keen cook and we eat mainly plant-based fresh food, very little processed stuff and actually don't have much of a sweet tooth, so I've never craved sweet things - it's cheese and savoury things for me.

This is similar to my experience too. And it's not got anything to do with a change in diet as for me I noticed within a week after my first jab that my mind was just so much quieter and I've been better to able to function. I will be willing to stay on this long term if it continues to help me in this way.

FWIW I'm not offended and eating a diet low in refined carbs is a positive for anyone really.
