Mounjaro advice for newbies

KeepCalmandGiveItaGo · 01/11/2024 16:56

Hi, I am excited (and a bit nervous) to get started with Mounjaro after signing up with Voy!

I really appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience on this board and wondered if anyone has any advice or top tips for newbies starting out?

A couple of things I’m nervous about is injecting having never done it before:
-is it easy to self inject? Is there a risk of pushing the needle in too far and it ending up in muscle?
-Is there a best site to inject? (Between the advised sites of arm, tum or thigh?)
-What has helped stave off or manage any nausea or other side effects?
-Do you change your diet or keep the same but smaller portions?

Any advice on your experiences and what helped you starting out v. welcome! 🫶

Hello! Welcome to the team! 😂

To answer your questions:

The needle is so tiny that you can't really go wrong with it.

I have personally always injected in my tummy, I change sides each week but never injected anywhere else. It makes absolutely no difference in terms of of suppression where you inject but just best to choose the site you're most comfortable with. If you choose your arm you should get someone else to do it.

I've not really had much in the way of side effects but I did eat very plainly for the first week or so then kind of slowly started introducing other food to see how I got on. The only food that's made me feel a bit iffy was chocolate. I think it was just too rich!

I've not actively changed much about my diet, I have aimed where possibly to choose higher protein and lower fat options but this is mostly because people seemed to have more side effects with high fat food so I consciously chose to be careful about this. I think I've naturally eaten less carbs because I'm getting fuller before I get to foods like that but it wasn't a conscious decision.

Good luck, happy for you to hit me up with any questions! About to take my 10th injection tonight and lost nearly 2 stone so far.

Welcome!!
Have a look at the 'continuing mounjaro' thread as there is a link at the top to a website with loads of info for new starters including videos of how to inject etc. Good luck!

Oh wow! That is such an amazing result! Well done TidyDancer! That amount of weight loss is incredible. I am so hoping Mounjaro will give me the boost I need as dieting I’ve lost and gained the same stone the last few years and so need to make proper forward (downward) progress. I’ve got over 5 stone to lose.

Thank you so much for your tips - I am soaking it all in right now! :)

Fantastic, I will check this out, thank you v much! 👍

Can I ask how long you have been on Mounjaro and how are you finding it?

If you are further up the doses can I ask did you have any issues transitioning t a higher dose?

I've always injected in my stomach. There's so much fat there, no chance of going into muscle.
It's really easy, and doesn't hurt at all.
I eat fewer carbs now and much more protein than I did before. Some days I'll have what we've always eaten for dinner but a smaller portion, other days I will just have meat or fish with salad.
The biggest change is that I no longer snack.
I've been on MJ for 5 months now and just reached a 4 stone loss.
Good luck with it.

Also meant to say I'm now on 10mg and have had no bad side effects at all.

Snozzlemaid - thank you and wow that is such an amazing loss! Great to hear the higher dose has not been an issue.

Reading experiences like this and the losses people are having is very inspirational ✨

I am now in week 20 (flown by!) and have been on 5mg for the past 16 weeks!

The first week or so of both doses I had a very bloated feeling and a bit of constipation. Had a couple of bouts of diarrhoea but reckon that was down to my insistence on drinking too much wine when out! 😂

I have definitely been colder since starting but that's been about it. Could all change when I go up to 7.5 in the next few weeks though 😁

Overall, it has changed my life! I have lost nearly 4 stone, my blood pressure is normal (ok, I am still on meds but hope to come off), no longer need daily painkillers for my knees, have got the fitness bug back after 20 years and have stopped my daily wine habit! Add on the absence of cravings for sugar/ chips etc and I am one very happy bunny! 😁

Thanks so much for sharing and well done so much on your journey, nothing short of amazing! I would very much be a happy bunny too, congrats!!

Did you take anything to help settle the bloating? I currently take medication to manage constipation so am thinking I may need to up my dose of this but have a GP apt in 3 weeks so planning to review it with them then.
I guess at least we can layer up with feeling cold?! Will make a mental note to order a hot water bottle..(my 6 yr old as stolen what used to be mine! 😂 )

Definitely talk to your gp if it's already an issue for you.

I didn't take anything. Just reckoned it was an expected side effect and would pass. Which it did👍

Thank you I will, thankfully I got an appointment in the pipeline so will be able to talk about how it’s going. It sounds like the reverse with loose tum can occur too so may be a balancing act, but the benefits are so positive will be worth it! Good to hear it was a passing issue as well and not ongoing 👍
