Mounjaro etc from GP

Hi all
I’m after some advice please on whether a GP would prescribe me mounjaro or other treatment.
I have a BMI of nearly 45.
My issue is not education, I know plenty about nutrition and the science of weight loss. It’s emotional and huge appetite plus binge eating.
I am seeing the GP tomorrow but don’t want to be referred to an education group. I am keen to try a treatment. I tried orlistat back in the later 2000s when that was popular.
I’d welcome any experiences or advice.
Thanks.

In short, no they won't.
They'll refer you to weight management services and it's around a year and a half wait to be seen.
Best purchasing it privately.

IdWantThatManInMyLifeboat · 21/10/2024 16:39

GP’s don’t prescribe it for weight loss in our area. Even the tier 3 hospital weight management service don’t prescribe it, the GP may refer you for that.

WhatsInTheRug · 21/10/2024 16:39

Nope!

Not a chance

You'll have to pay privately

DrizzleMySwizzle · 21/10/2024 16:50

Very unlikely I'd say.

ItsAlrightDarling · 21/10/2024 16:53

Sadly they won’t prescribe it, they’re refer you to their weight management service which has a very long waiting list. If there’s any way you can afford to buy it privately then I’d do so if I were you.

Hi OP, my BMI was 46 at the start of this year (similar reasons to you - stress eating/ binge eating/ self-soothing with overeating).

I begged and pleaded for NHS referral to weight management but was not pre-diabetic and have no "co-morbitities" so was told no referral was possible in my NHS Trust - the waiting list was so long it had been closed!

I paid privately for my Mounjaro prescription this summer and my BMI is now 39 and dropping steadily. It's amazing stuff and I expect to stay on it for at least a year more, until I get my BMI to healthy or nearly...

I'll stay on it indefinitely if it's approved by the medics, my quality of life is so much better now without obsessing about food all the time. Absolute life-changer. Best investment you can make in yourself (and with discounts and referral code deals it's really not all that much monthly).

DM me if you want to ask anything else - I also have a code for Voy that I can share.

Best of luck!

Searchingforthelight · 21/10/2024 17:07

They won't prescribe it
But looks up the info on Mumsnet on it
Referral codes will discount the price

You'll spend very little on food when you are on it- it's unbelievable in that sense

Your shopping bill reduces drastically

So well worth getting it prescribed privately

Yes it's a miracle drug and you'll be delighted and amazed by it !

Firestace · 21/10/2024 17:09

No, even if they think it's a good option for you the NHS currently generally won't fund it (might change in the future).

spilltheteapot · 21/10/2024 17:18

Thank you for your honest replies. I think I have been kidding myself that it will
be prescribed without question. That’s what I’ve been hoping for!
I have had counselling before for binge eating, perhaps they may be able to refer me
in that direction, although I know the wait will be long.
I will have to research the affordable and reputable suppliers.
If you have any recommendations please let me know.

There is a referral thread on the topic which lists discount codes
Have a look and find most affordable
Honestly you'll spend next to nothing on food anyway, so the cost is completely offset by that

I was spending at least £50 per week on my food - easily that, as had a few sandwiches hastily and hungrily purchased at work and a weekend take away.

I've saved money on this medication

You can do it now- don't wait for NHS to catch up which could be years

People say you spend next to nothing on food but since I've been on MJ I've been trying to make sure I get 100g of good quality protein a day, which I hadn't been previously, so am probably spending as much as before. Just on healthier food.

Yes I haven’t saved money on food either, partly because I still have to feed the other 4 members of the family, and partly because I’m making sure everything I eat is as nutritious as possible as I need to make the most of the reduced calories I’m eating, nutritionally.

I'm still cooking for the rest of the family of 5. But I'm only eating the veg, my portion of Bolognese or green curry gets frozen and kept for a busy night.

Plus no shop sandwiches, and no weekly takeaway

I'm eating bugger all, I can hardly believe it.

So it's a cost saving for me food wise

Also thinking of the clothes which have been hanging unused in wardrobe, which will finally get some action, instead of buying more big clothes

For me it's a diversion of money and some saving, not an outlay

ItsAlrightDarling · 21/10/2024 18:55

I didn’t spend money on takeaways or shop sandwiches etc anyway so any cost savings are negligible for me, and offset by the fact that I’ve increased the amount and the quality of the protein that I’m eating. But everyone is different!

Of course!

I wanted to just point out some possibilities for anyone who grabbed an M&S overpriced sandwich, that this will be not be a thing while on Mountjaro!

The cost neutral thing is the way I justify it, to myself and to my DH ( who continues with lunchtime shop purchases and Friday night takeaways!)

KitsyWitsy · 21/10/2024 19:15

Yeah. I don’t even buy cappuccinos anymore. I am saving a fortune.

no fizzy drinks, no crap, no nothing really.

Papergirl1968 · 21/10/2024 21:14

Unless you’re diabetic, which is how I get mine from the GP.

MJOverInvestor · 21/10/2024 21:58

I saw a nutritionist at my GP surgery in June who suggested that it might be prescribable by GPs in my area in a 3-6 month timeline (he’d been at a meeting to discuss this). I’ve seen news reports since then that suggest this is a plan… so no harm in asking what is a perfectly valid question… www.nice.org.uk/news/articles/consultation-on-nhs-england-proposals-for-a-phased-launch-of-obesity-injection

Moier · 21/10/2024 22:23

If you also have Type 2 diabetes and tried at least two other diabetic medications that haven't worked . As well as your high BMI.. then you fit the criteria.. but it's up to your GP.
My friend got it prescribed for that reason

Orangesandlemons77 · 22/10/2024 09:32

You could try this OP

www.oviva.com
