Want to try a weight loss injection for the first time

Hi
I'm wanting to try a weight loss injection as I have tried traditional methods and after a few days fail as the hunger pangs are too much.

I'm 5ft 4 and weigh just shy of 15 stone (the heaviest I have ever been). The last couple of days I have cut down my calorie intake and tried to eat healthier and do exercise for pretty much the first time in my life.

I want to order a weight loss injection when I get paid at the end of the month and am leaning towards Mounjaro. Does anyone have any tips/advice etc.

I am a regular Mumsnet poster but have changed my username as other than my husband, I'm not wanting to tell anyone else.

Thanks!

My advice is to go for it. It will change your life for the better. And take it one day at a time. Don’t over-focus on any stories re bad side effects, be informed sure, just don’t obsess about it. I’ve been on Mounjaro for nearly 5 months now, I’ve lost 4 stone (25% of my body weight) and have not had any side effects.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 15/10/2024 15:59

Another one to recommend it. I've lost 1.5 stones already on it already. Aiming to lose 5 stones overall.

My advice would be to go read one of the many support threads here.

You will be able to see people using it in real time, side effects, understand how it works and so on. Lots of real life experience (the good and the bad) is there.

Yes these jabs are great. However, there a lot to consider and understand.

Are there side effects. And what are the long term problems? Does anybody know?

It seems to being touted as a cure all but I would like to know where did this suddenly come from? It seems to good to be true tbh.

Some people feel nausea when then first start.

I get a bit burpy for 24 hours after each jag but apart from that just appetite suppression.

It’s definitely not being touted as a cure all.

There’s lots of studies and lots of information on short and long term side effects. Which are easily and readily available to anyone who wants to look into them.

The medication comes with lots of information on long and short term side effects.

Hi op

I have the same stats as you 5ft 4 and before the summer I was 14 stone 12. I have been on Mounjaro since the start of June and I currently weigh 12 stone 7. I would definitely go for it. I haven't moved up every single dose I have stayed on the lowest for as long as possible and it takes the edge or hunger and gives me some willpower

morbidcuriosity · 15/10/2024 17:52

Go for it.. I started 9 weeks ago and lost 2.5 stone so far, best decision ive ever made..

My side effects have been a bit of constipation but i know its cos i hadnt drank enough water or put enough fibre in my diet.

Realdeal1 · 16/10/2024 04:38

So if I were to not eat much during the day, would it do the same? I eat one meal but it's a big portion!

These drugs mimic a natural hormones the body produces naturally when we eat. The natural form are GLP1's. Orginall used for diabetes they have been being used for around 20 years so not new. The help control blood sugars and the weight loss was seen in diabetics using it for this. Some weight loss Drs in the US have used it for obesity treatments off label for well over 10 years.

Some experts believe for alot of people who are obese their natural endocrime systems controlled via these GLP1s and other hormones are actually working against them pushing their minds and bodies to overeat and store fat. Many naturally thin people this is not an issue. Ironically it makes sense from an evolution POV for thousands of years people who could eat and eat and store fat in times of plenty would be the ones who survived lean times where the natural thin would have likely starved. Unfortunately we live in a world with too much food and too much high fat high sugar food. Many also propose that the highly processed food we have developed in the last 50 years is also stopping our bodies naturally controlling appetite and weight.

There are a number of these type of drugs already available and numerous under development. So far in 20 years of use and numerous studies there are no obvious dangers but in rodents the saw increased risk of thyroid cancer so they warn u against taking if you have a family history of this. TBF its extremely rare anyway so this would possibly be an increased risk

The other condition warned about is pancretitus which actually can often be seen in diet based weight loss anyway so its important to eat high protein and drink lots of water to help protect against this.

Majority side effects are some nausea and gastro issues but the majority get no side effects or mild versions of these.

There are a number of medical conditions that are being investigated that possibly may be treatable with these type of medications based on things they have seen in groups of diabetics who have been long term on these meds. These include heart desease, addictions, alzheimers and some types of cancer. The problem is how much is due to weight loss itself as obesity and diabetes contribute to all these deseases, and how much is just on the drugs.

In return the food noise that you get as well as cravings and the knawing hunger between meals is just gone completely. It enables you to eat better and smaller potions and generally seems to encourage better health behaviours in studies.

However as its stil being studied longer term I think you have to weigh up risk verses reward. For me obesity and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is far more of a risk that the side effects of the drugs and it has been lifechanging.
But I think for someone who just needs to lose a few pounds for a special occasion then diet and exercise is the way to go and the risks for them aren't worth it.

The interesting thing is how it will effect the world we live in. If as many experts predict within 10 years these drugs will be a cheap daily pill that they believe large numbers of people worldwide will take akin to statin treatments now then that effect companies who profit from obesity like manufacturers of knee and hip replacments fast food companies, diet companies etc. But maybe down the line this will create a future generation not exposed to large amounts of unhealthy food available everywhere, a societal push to better quality food and save NHS a fortune in obesity treatments.

But does it go back on afterwards?

But does it go back on afterwards?

Its difficult to know what maintenance looks like, but this could be a drug for life in some form.

At present I take medication for life for my high blood pressure. This is coming down and my doctor is looking to reduce the dosage and eventually take me off this drug. So I could be swapping one drug for another.

Its going to take me nearly a year to safely lose my weight. I'm hoping in that in that time my system will 'reset' to not over eat.

Who knows.

I do know that I'm 3 stone down since January and I'm considerably healthier now and feel so much better and this is something I want to continue. I can't do this on my own and this medication is helping me.

WLINewbie · 11/04/2025 12:00

Mainstream media constantly calling it a 'skinny jab' doesn't help. It makes you think the jab melts fat for you whilst you eat what you like. For me, the jab let's me live how I imagine a 'normal' person does around food. No obsessions, no extreme hunger an hour after a meal, much less sugar cravings. It makes sticking to a calorie deficit easy.

On the other hand I currently feel the dose I'm on is too high for me as I have no hunger and having to remind myself to eat (things I thought I'd never say). This isn't what I want as it's not healthy or sustainable so for next jab I'll be reducing the dose.

WLINewbie · 11/04/2025 12:08

Argh just realised I've posted on an old thread 😫

FoodieToo · 11/04/2025 20:57

Hey OP ! I started this drug in September . I am now really nice and slim ! I was not that overweight - BMI 30 .
I am BMI 24 now .
I think you need to be prepared to take this drug forever . I think most of us will regain if/ when we stop.
So, to consider

  1. Do you want to stay on this drug forever ?
  2. How do you feel about long term unknown side effects ?
  3. Can you easily afford it ?
I worked out it could cost me 90 k ( euro ) IF I stay on this for the next 30 years !!!! That's a significant amount of money - a deposit for one of my kids . So there is a lot to consider . While I love being slim I now realise that me without the drug is like trying to hold the tide back . It's no wonder I was overweight - I was always hungry ! So my 'natural' state means I will always be overweight .

Sorry - old thread revival !
