Mounjaro affect on Blood Sugar

Hi I've tried to search first and can't see an answer. I am very obese but my fasting blood sugars are normal/quite low when I've had them done. I don't have a way of testing myself so maybe I should buy a monitor first. If I skip breakfast or a meal I often get quite shaky/weak so think I get low blood sugar often. I want mounjaro for appetite suppression/food noise but will it make me have low blood sugar if it reduces blood sugar and mine aren't that high to begin with? Or should it just stabilise the peaks and troughs?

If you are eating less then your body will have a reaction to that, until it catches up with itself.

If Im hungry or feel a bit woozy (Im not on the meds by the way), I have a small handful of nuts or a bit of cheese

You might not have 'low' blood sugar, but lower than you normally have and so its a reaction to that perhaps, or just getting used to less food. Try very small amounts regularly if you can

Is it low blood pressure perhaps?

Sorry should have said I'm not on it yet I've been dithering about it all year. I'm on meds for high bp. I've taken my bp when I've felt shaky and it's normal. I'm just wondering if I go on the jab will I get low blood sugar all the time.

I think wegovy doesn’t lower your blood sugar like Mounjaro does

SilenceInside · 15/10/2024 11:57

They both regulate blood sugar levels, and lower blood sugar levels when necessary. But not to the point of being hypoglycemic, usually, although there is a risk if you are diabetic and taking insulin or other medications for diabetes.

You don't actually know if you're feeling weak/shaky because of low blood sugars, though. The solution regardless of medication is to eat regular healthy meals, even if small, rather than skip a meal.

Mounjaro can be used as a diabetic medication.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/10/2024 12:21

Are you diabetic? If yes I would discuss with your Dr first.

If not I would use a supportive/responsive provider who you will be able to discuss your concerns with and give you advice on how to manage side effects.

No I am not diabetic or prediabetic as I said I don't have a monitor to test blood sugar. I know the jabs were originally to treat diabetes and when you read up on them the first thing it says is about lowering blood sugar which is why I am a bit concerned that as someone who doesn't have high blood sugar it might make mine too low

But you dont know that yours is low?

If you're eating less your body will react initially, its not used to it, eat small regular meals.

SilenceInside · 15/10/2024 12:38

They don't lower blood sugar in general. They regulate your blood sugar by acting on the various processes that happen when you eat. The risk of hypoglycaemia is higher if you take other medications for diabetes as well.

My blood sugars are normal (recent blood test) and I've never had symptoms as you describe whilst taking Mounjaro. It's not a major risk or concern. Especially if you eat regularly, even if only small amounts.

Thanks. Yes I do try not to skip meals to prevent feeling shaky and I don't know its caused by low blood sugar but it only happens if I've not eaten. I am wondering if it's useful to get a blood sugar monitor anyway to find out what it does during the day.

You can get monitors but its easy to become obsessed with them

If it happens when you havent eaten, its simply your body getting used to eating less or you need small regular meals. Its fairly easy to fix.

Handful of nuts, a couple of dates, a mini babybel or similar amount of cheese, couple of dollops of houmous with some carrot or cucumber, that type of thing, just enough for something to processed in you

ComingBackHome · 15/10/2024 13:44

I think a good sign that its low blood sugar is if the shakiness goes away when you eat.
