I think my friend is addicted to taking Wegovy

She started earlier this year. I know she 'cheated' by holding heavy weights to make the scales show a heavier weight.

I don't know her exact starting weight, but she is about 5.5 and was a good size 16.

I saw her in real life last week and oh my god, she's so thin. I was shocked. She's a size 8 she says although she looks thinner.

She's still taking Wegovy! She says she's taking it less frequently though. She's barely eating anything but drinking a lot😢

This post is not to judge anyone who takes wegovy etc, I know it's been brilliant for so many people. But I'm really worried about her. She says she gets it from super drug, but I have a horrible feeling she's getting it illegally online somewhere.

Just to reiterate she does not look healthy. She looks anorexic.

Is it safe to carry on taking it like this?

Some People always will abuse anything, from laxatives, co codamol, you name it someone will abuse it.
I am not going to belittle the OP’s concern but she needs to talk to her friend, not a load of people who are taking a med legitimately. It’s like going on a wine specialist forum and saying her mate is an alcoholic.

This board isn't called "weight loss injection fans only". Presumably it's a board where anyone can ask any questions about them, or so I assumed. But obviously I now know better.

I don't want to be here any more than you want me here, believe me.

@Fairslice it's a board within the weight loss chat for support.

I don't see any of these threads on any other weight loss board. It's really unfair to those of us trying to make use of these medications to make real, lasting changes for ourselves.

Sampler · 08/10/2024 18:15

Even the way you reply shows your disingenuous nature.

That's because it's Wegovy she's using.

I tried to move the thread and they've redirected it to here.

Complain to mumsnet if you don't want it here.

@Fairslice what I mean is I never see "I think my friend is addicted to calorie counting/exercise"

Well, most anorexics are addicted to calorie counting and exercise, so clearly that's a real thing.

But my question was about wegovy.

SilenceInside · 08/10/2024 18:22

@Fairslice if she's got an eating disorder then talk about that on the eating disorder board. This board isn't about that, or people misusing medication. There's nothing anyone here can help or support with.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/10/2024 18:23

Wegovy doesn't have any physiological addictive properties but anyone with an eating disorder may be psychologically dependent on them, however it isn't obvious from your posts that's even what's going on.

I'd want a friend to raise concerns with me, but I wouldn't want them to think they can dictate what medication I take, and I'd want them to have an open mind.

Equally nobody owes you an explanation including your friend so it might just have to be something you let go of.

I have lost 2.7 st on semigultide which I got from Juniper. I’m now at my goal weight and don’t want to lose any more. I don’t want to put any on thought either . The company paused my treatment and asked for new photos and more info. After I’d done this they reduced my dose from 1mg (6 months previously I’d asked to reduce my dose from 2.5 mg as it was giving me palpitations.) to a maintenance dose of .5 mg. They said they’ll review this after 6 months. It does sound like after a year they want to stop treatment but they said there aren’t hard and fast rules and they work with each person, in terms of health conditions, side effects, how they’re doing.

im sure it would be possible to get it from less reputable companies or to photoshop your pics (I don’t have the know how to do that ) if you were absolutely set on getting it and using it long past the point where you need a certain strength. I’ve got a lot of health conditions so don’t want to mess with it by not giving an accurate report of my weight /height etc. I hope you friend is ok. It’s a worry

Show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are. All the "my friend lied, etc" posters are interesting and obviously similar to their friends. It's not the gotcha people think it is.

Edited

So true.....it really isn't! 😂

WhatsInTheRug · 08/10/2024 18:30

Since is when something you do daily.....injecting/logging calories/weighing/calorie counting.....now called 'addicted'?

It's just part of a weight loss journey

Like any other 😂

I'm quite surprised at the prickly responses on here.

Because it's tedious and boring, OP. Your friend can do what she likes. You're not her mother.

I did try, as you can see. Perhaps ask for the thread to be moved if it's bothering people so much.

Op what is it you feel that you need support with?

Can you email Superdrug and let them know your concerns? They won’t tell you anything obvs but they may look at her more closely?

I think this is an invasion of privacy.

“She's barely eating anything but drinking a lot”

The danger on this site is the emphasis on thinness rather than health. No programme in which you barely eat anything is going to be good for you. It’s bad enough being rigid about 1200 calories as day. Eventually she’s going to look like shit through lack of nutrients. ( dull hair and skin, lethargy etc) The problem is that people in the middle of these disordered eating programmes ( whatever they are) value the size over all the other costs. And the person selling the drugs doesn’t really have much motivation to stop selling it. Sorry OP I’m not sure there’s much you can do since she’ll assume your concern is an attempt to sabotage her.

Wowsers. Rude offensive, assumptive and wrong all in a few lines.

Of course someone who is 5 5 and a size 6 is underweight…. Give your head a wobble

A size 6 is a 25 inch waist. Hate to break it to you but that's my waist size and I'm 5 ft 6 and 9st 2 ish. Nowhere near underweight.

Op, is she truly only drinking or does she not want to eat whatever is on offer wherever you are or senses judgement. Only you will have a sense if any of that resonates.
And I echo others. Are you truly sure she’s too thin?

AdultChildQuestion · 08/10/2024 20:02

I don't think it's healthy to eat very little. Food is where you get your nutrition from. Nutrition provides you with the means to heal yourself from cuts and bruises, to fight off infection, to keep your bones and teeth strong. Eating nothing surely means all this starts to fail?

Wegovy or not, people need to eat.

1200 calories a day isn't nothing though. It's what a lot of short women need.

Disturbia81 · 08/10/2024 20:59

I've seen a few abuse it and they all look skinny, frail and much older. They'll always be people who go too extreme

SilenceInside · 08/10/2024 21:03

@Disturbia81 is this in real life? That you personally know of 3 or more people who have used Wegovy inappropriately and now all look skinny, frail and much older?

Yes, and a few others who have gone too far with metformin. One told me she doesn't want to stop as she's scared of her appetite coming back. I am so glad these drugs exist and they have removed so much risk from not being obese anymore! But I do worry for those who don't stop when they're already slim, because they look ill and don't enjoy food anymore.
