Started on mounjaro… what to expect

I’m almost two weeks in on mounjaro starter doze of 2.5mg. After the first injection I felt the effects initially, but the initial hit has worn off. I’m due to take the third injection tomorrow but the impact is very minimal. I’ve lost about 5lb-6lb in the first two weeks but I’m finding it slow and I feel I could easily put this back on. I thought there would be an initial surge of weight loss which would even-out over a period of time but this feels like it’s painfully slow and not always in the right direction .

to the people who have stuck with it over time, does the higher doses work better?

Also does anyone have any tips for the horrid burps that’s have started happening just recently.

Thanks

@Lifeisapeach if you read the guidance about Mounjaro, the first 4 weeks on 2.5mg are not intended to produce weight loss although some people do lose weight. It can take some people until they are on the higher doses before they experience consistent weight loss. So it's absolutely not the case that anyone should expect high initial losses.

You have already had some effect from the 2.5mg dose, so you need to allow the levels of the drug in your system to build up. Losing weight at more than 2lbs a week is a higher than expected rate of loss. There's no reason why you won't continue to lose weight as the levels build in your system.

For the unpleasant burbs, I've seen people suggest peppermint tea or peppermint capsules.

Thank you. This makes sense.

how are you finding the journey?

5-6lbs in 4 weeks IS a surge of weight loss. It's 1.5lbs a week which considering it's presumably been pretty effortless is a great achievement.

@Lifeisapeach I'm at 13 weeks or so now, I'm currently on 7.5mg and at the moment I'm likely to stay on that for a while. It's working for me with no side effects at the moment so I don't feel the need to move up. My BMI has gone from almost 50 to just under 40, I've lost about a third of what I need to lose in total. I expect to be taking Mounjaro for another 6 months to get to my ultimate goal weight.

I had one experience of unpleasant side effects (D&V) around 5 weeks in, on 5mg, which did make me wonder about whether or not I should stay on that dose or even stop. But it was short lived and I managed, and have had no repeat of it yet. I think it was triggered by what I'd eaten, and I am much more careful to avoid fatty, sugary things even in small quantities.

As others say, 2.5mg is a non-therapeutic dose; great that you've lost some weight but it will also take time. In the long term, it will likely average out as slow anyway - 2lb per week is very reasonable.

Another vote for peppermint capsules and tea for the sulphur. It's worth keeping tabs on what you're eating to see if anything sets them off - for a lot of folks, a meal which is too large or too fatty can often be a trigger.

You do need to redo your expectations, 2lb a week is a good loss and if you've lost 5lb in 2 weeks then you're exceeding that. You will not lose more than 2 lb a week every week and some weeks you might lose nothing.

Mounjaro reduces your appetite because it slows down your digestion and it makes your body more receptive to insulin so that your body is breaking down sugar more effectively making it less likely to convert into fat.

I did my 5th jab on Thursday last week, I was dieting before that for a couple of weeks, my loss on MJ isn't significantly higher than it was just doing it myself, but it is easier because I'm not as hungry and I think about food less.

I've attached my weekly tracker and my graph of daily weigh ins so you can see it's not a matter of big losses every week and there is some variation up and down on a daily basis.

Hi, I am going on holiday shortly can anyone advise on packing my Mounjaro meds. Do I put them in the hold or hand luggage? My son says hand luggage. Also I am due an operation shortly ( umbilical hernia) do I stop taking the jabs and if so how long before/after. Would appreciate some advice.

Darkgames · 10/02/2025 11:40

@Jenelliot with regards to travel, I took mine in hand luggage.
Regarding your operation speak tomyour prescriber and the nurse/dr when you have your surgery pre-op assessment.

Jenelliot · 10/02/2025 11:43

Thank you Darkgames, I would have thought in my case in the hold, but I’ll do hand luggage as suggested. Travel still confuses me!
