I've just ordered Mounjaro - what to eat?

Name change for a fresh start. I'm a bit scared because I've just ordered Mounjaro, it was approved within hours and I'm collecting it on Weds. So scary but I know I need to do something to lose this 6-7 stone that has built up over 20 years or more.
I'm not diabetic but suspect I'm prediabetic as my blood sugar gets pretty high at times and takes quite a long time to come down (I bought a finger prick kit to keep an eye on things). Hopefully weight loss will keep this in check and mean I avoid diabetes.

Anyway, if any of you are on weight loss injections what does your daily food look like on an average day?
I'm trying to plan what to pick up from the supermarket when I pick up my first month of Mounjaro.

I'm not going to tell people in my circle as I know people will either judge or be concerned and I want to just get on with things.

Wish me luck!

I just eat my normal diet, wholegrains, fruit and veg with mostly lean protein (usually fish). You will probably be less keen on sweets and snacks, so you will be able to cut down on any treat food. The only difference for me is smaller portion sizes and feeling I can go longer between meals. You will want to skip spicy/greasy foods initially as some people have unpleasant digestive symptoms.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 07/10/2024 18:50

I just eat normal things, and calorie count. Although at first my appetite was so low that I was eating high cal foods just to try and get 1000 cals in a day! These days (17 months in) I can definitely eat more! I don't follow any diets, just count and stick to cals in and cals out.

coffeeandteav · 07/10/2024 18:50

I have just had a Dominos pizza. Just half instead of my previous full one with sides.

SilenceInside · 07/10/2024 18:56

I eat my normal food (vegetarian) just a lot less and absolutely no snacks, "treats", dessert or anything like that. I find I naturally seem to prefer protein and veg over carbs at the moment and so I tend not to have the carbs part of a meal or only a tiny amount. I can't and don't want to eat anything fried/oily, in a rich sauce, or anything creamy or sugary.

If I'm finding it hard to eat anything at all, due to the appetite suppression then I will have some high protein yoghurt and maybe some berries or fresh figs.

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 07/10/2024 18:56

Thank you. That's great. I hope to god I don't feel like I want treat/snack food as that has been my downfall for YEARS!

I've wrote my shopping list of things like stir fry, eggs, soup etc.

I've cut out all bread pasta and potatoes or it gives me the runs.
I've been on it since the 20th July and i started at 14.4 and today I'm 11.6

Use it as an aid to overhaul your eating habits. It makes it so much easier to do this as it takes away all the food chatter. When it stops working (which it will eventually) you need to have made these changes otherwise it will just go straight back on.
The people who say they eat what they used to eat but smaller portions are just wasting their time. Yes a treat every so often is fine but changes need to happen for long term weight loss and maintenance.

B- fat free Greek yogurt (don't like full fat would be better I know) berries a teaspoon of peanut butter
L- wrap/bagel with protein and lots salad
D- small portion of a healthy dinner ie chilli/spag Bol/ curry

Pretty standard day for me I count calories and try and keep protein high.

There is thread called what I ate today on mounjaro if would like some more ideas

If you search weight loss injections on MN you’ll find a really supportive country of people. We’re all on Mounjaro and most of us think it’s great. I say this because it took me a while to find out that these threads are in a different area to the weight loss chat that you’ve posted this message in. There is currently a ‘what I’ve eaten today ‘ thread and lioads of other threads with great info. Good luck.

Breakfast - either half a grapefruit, an orange, or half a protein yoghurt (tesco have great ones in atm and on offer too - 15g of protein for 81cals per pot -
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/301253499?_gl=119a3wnp_upMQ.._gaMzQ0NzExNDk1LjE3MjgzMjY1NjM._ga_33B19D36CY*MTcyODMyNjU2Mi4xLjAuMTcyODMyNjU2Mi4wLjAuMTU1NDM3ODY4

I batch cook for lunches from Monday to Friday.
Same every day (boring I know but I love it!)
Grilled chicken mini fillets, about 100g a day
Either spinach/broccoli/spring greens, steamed
Red split lentils - about a tablespoon.

I have these 3 things in tupperwares in the fridge and just re-heat and add a bit of hot sauce - lunches sorted.

For dinners, (I have a husband and 2 teenage boys who eat a LOT!) So I just make normal dinners but eat about a third of what I used to eat.
(I used to have the same portion size as my 6 foot plus husband, which is likely why I put weight on in the first place...)
So, for example, chicken thighs with greens and couscous,
prawn stir fry, home made curry, etc.
I cook everything from scratch and just eat more of the vegetables and less of the carb-type stuff.

I've completely stopped snacking, and stopped hoovering up the bits left on the kids' plates! That was a terrible habit.

I used the time on MJ to totally overhaul my diet. I didn't want to come off and put weight all back on. I also joined gym and started exercising more to build muscle in hope that afterwards this would increase my basic metabolic rate (amount of calories your body uses just to be).

I started listening to the Zoe podcast and including fermented foods which are supposed to be good for gut microbiome which these GLP medications help with too.

I included protein in meals, natural sources no shakes or bars. Previously if I made porridge I would be starving by mid morning so started to stir Greek yoghurt into cooked porridge and found this more satisfying. Or I put greek yoghurt on weetabix. Would have both of these with fruit (fresh berries in summer just started adding frozen when cooking now it's out of season). After a while I started adding a tbsp of linseed to porridge and am trying to learn to like it with chia seeds in for a change now. I only have toast (from seeded or brown bread with unprocessed ingredients) for breakfast if it has veg and protein too like avocado with feta and eggs or I made baked beans.

Good luck!

I try to stick to a relatively low carb diet, meals are meat and veg, no potatoes, pasta, rice etc.

I low carb because I have T2 diabetes and through monitoring my sugars I know that potatoes particularly but all refined carbs do me no favours at all.

I tend to just replace the carb element of a meal with green veg or mushrooms, so tonight for example DD and DH had lasagna. I held back some of the meat in red sauce and used it to stuff a couple of portabello mushrooms which were baked alongside the lasagna.

If I make a roast dinner then I'll have extra broccoli and meat but no potatoes or Yorkshire pudding (sad but tolerable).

Snacks:

  • longley farms full fat cottage cheese (no other brand is worth eating)
  • full fat Greek yoghurt
  • beef jerky
  • boiled eggs
  • veg sticks and hummus
  • cheese chunks/cheesestring/babybel
  • cooked chicken/turkey/deli meats

Doesn't the Mounjaro reduce blood sugar so you could have a little pasta etc?

OP posts:
InfoSecInTheCity · 07/10/2024 20:23

Mounjaro does lower blood sugar and taking it has meant that alongside a low carb diet I've been able to completely stop using insulin and metformin, so I've gone from 4 tablets and 2 injections a day to 1 injection a week.

I use a Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitor because I hate doing the finger pricks and having bruised fingers all the time, and I've gone from being in the 'normal levels' range 48% of the time to 95% of the time. Should be getting my HBA1C tested at some point in the next couple of months and looking forward to seeing what it is.

Last time it was 11% and diabetes is diagnosed for anyone with a result over 6.5%, my freestyle is estimating that based on my blood sugar level I'm about 7% at the moment, so there's actually a possibility I might be able to put it into remission.

That's amazing!

Since I’ve been on Mounjaro I have lost all interest in food, it’s like a miraculous switch in my head has turned off my obsessive food thoughts. I only eat easy prep things like soup and break, jacket potato with tuna or other easy cook foods, because I dont care enough to make the effort to cook. Sometimes I just eat jam on toast and a yoghurt and I’m completely full
