What's changed ? Why sudden side effects ?

I took Mounjaro for a couple of months ( May- July time ).

I had absolutely zero side effects until my second injection of 5 mg. When I had some questionable stomach pain / vomiting and decided to come off it and have myself checked out ( ultrasound etc ) all checked out fine and I was cleared to continue.

So I started back on 2.5 and I've been pretty unwell nearly every time I've taken it. No stomach aches, thankfully but disgusting burps / nausea and vomiting for a couple of days. It really wipes me out for a couple of days and I can't really afford to be wiped out like this.

I'm confused about why I'm suddenly reacting to lower doses, even though I didn't before at all. Has anyone had this experience or something similar ?

If it happens again, I don't think I can continue as I'm literally bed bound for a couple of days and can't afford to keep being in this state.

Anyone ?

Mounjaro has several effects and I think symptoms depend on what you're susceptible to. Sounds like delayed stomach emptying. What are you eating?

Try and keep a food diary and remove 'heavy' dense items like bread. Make sure you drink loads when you eat and chew lots

NewLifter · 28/09/2024 07:16

I'm not sure that anyone can know why this is happening.

I assume you disposed of your old pen and purchased a new fresh pen from a reputable pharmacy?

Have you tried any remedies to counteract the side effects?

Unfortunately side effects are common but if it's making you bed bound, which is highly unusual, then it sounds like this medication simply isn't for you unfortunately 😞

It's just so strange because I was absolutely fine before !

I know no one can tell me for sure but just wondered if someone else started and was fine, had a break and then had the same issues.

Yeah I just can't be bed bound indeed ! I find dealing with nausea and vomiting horrendous.

Yes I always got it from boots and have always got new pens etc so it shouldn't be that.

I'm really trying not to over eat anything and stick to bland foods like potatoes, palin pasta, maybe a bit of rice when I first take the injection.

After a few days I'll eat lots of veggies and fish, nuts and seeds and legumes, fruit. Very littler processed stuff. Again, I try not to over eat.

I'd avoid pasta and potatoes myself.

When you feel sick ? It's the only bland food I can take when I feel sick. If I even eat. The first couple of days I don't really eat and then I'll have bland stuff like plain rice or pasta / potatoes. Then I go back to my usual diet.

Sounds horrendous OP. It's possible your body has now become more sensitive to one of the chemicals in Mounjaro. I am not a doctor though!

Might be worth trying Wegovy instead, which has a slightly different make up?

Aerialpigeon · 28/09/2024 07:44

Sometimes you can get sensitised to medication after a while - has this been prescribed/overseen by a doctor or pharmacist? Do you have a data sheet explaining side effects? These meds shouldn’t be sold without suppport if things go wrong.

Swissrollover · 28/09/2024 07:45

I've seen people report this issue before. I believe they had success by reducing to an even lower dose by counting clicks, before gradually increasing again.

Perhaps 30 clicks, so 1.25mg while your body adjusts, or even splitting the normal dose to 1.25mg twice a week.

Obviously not official advice, so depends on how you feel about veering from the guidelines. Also, be aware of how long the pen is open for, as 30 days max is the advice.

ETA. Have you spoken with Boots or your GP about it? They may have different advice, such as tryng an anti-emetic. Good luck, hope you feel.better soon.

I would look up low sulphur foods and make sure you’re having those esp just before and after you inject.

i know some people don’t like deviating from the doses but personally i would also try doing a half dose (by counting clicks on the pen) and see how that goes.

i know it’s not an official dose but I can’t see harm in having less of the substance.

I was generally ok on 2.5 apart from one week, but don’t seem to be able to tolerate 5mg, but 4mg works for me although my side effects do vary week to week. Its strange and doesn’t seem a wholly predictable or linear thing

Yes I have spoken to the prescribing doctor.

We discussed the issues I had when I was on it during the summer and had a couple of episodes of stomach pain and nausea / vomiting.

She advised me to get properly checked out by a doctor, which I did and it cost a fortune. I went to a gastroenterologist who was very pro mounjaro and said it just sounds like the usual side effects, but he'll check me out . MRI and ultrasound. All looked healthy and normal and he said I should just try again

I haven't spoken to anyone since I restated though because the side effects haven't included stomach pain really and I presume all they'll say is that it's a normal side effect and will get better with time.

Yes you're so right about the side effects varying from week to week and not being able to identify why.

I am going to try an even lower dose today as today is my injection day. If I get sick from that, I'm sadly going to have to stop, sadly. Because it really did help. But I've also really overhauled my diet and find that the less crap I eat, the less crap I eat. And the more crap I eat, the more crap I eat.

I would also avoid pasta and potatoes straight after the jab. If you want bland food, how about porridge, or even some vanilla protein shakes or Huel? Something low starch/low carb/high protein. I've also found that electrolytes are really crucial to feeling ok post-jab - Liquid IV are expensive, but have really worked when I'm feeling rough; also Phizz and other tablets, you can get them from Boots, Superdrug etc.

Don't you think protein is harder to digest than just simple carbs ? I just eat bland like that because it always settles my stomach when I'm ill. I can't really imagine being able to stomach protein when I'm feeling sick.
