Extra dose - did it work?!

Cluckyyy · 18/09/2024 15:53

I've done 3 weeks of 2.5mg with no side effects at all, and lost 13 pounds.... husband decided to start too and took my 4th dose from my pen. I did the extra dose yesterday by buying extra needles and hard twisting with my teeth (!) to number 1 and it went slack ..... but my question is today I'm hungry, and haven't been since I started - did I do the extra dose right do you think, or am I just paranoid?! I can't wait until next week and move up to the 5mg as don't like feeling hungry!

I'm just finishing 10mg . I have hard twisted an extra dose out of every pen from 2.5 to 10 mg so get 5 weeks worth of injections each time . So am now in my 20th week. I've only suffered mild constipation in the week I increase otherwise it's been plain sailing.

I'm on Mounjaro. Nearly 4 stone down with one to go. May not increase as suppression still good on week 5 of 10mg.

Just want to add.. my BP is 123/78 from 158/87 .. so I am very happy. I did it for my health above all else.

SilenceInside · 18/09/2024 16:11

@Cluckyyy your husband needs to have a consultation and have his own prescription, rather than take your medication.

Cluckyyy · 18/09/2024 16:45

Oh I know, sorry I should have explained, he's got his own prescription, but finished my pen off before starting his own! (Men huh?!)

I'd be pretty pissed off with him doing that with something prescribed for me and that cost money.

Well if they are married then it's THERE money - so no problem..

SilenceInside · 18/09/2024 17:24

It might be their money but he's used what was allocated for her prescription for nothing other than impatience it seems. I should hope that he is prepared to agree to spending family money on a replacement pen for the OP.

Cluckyyy · 18/09/2024 17:32

Don't worry we share most things in life - he's got a pen waiting in the fridge!

The pens are meant for single users only. There is a risk of contamination if you are sharing, even with a new needle each time and regardless of how careful you think you are being in a domestic setting.

AboutVattime · 18/09/2024 17:44

Oh stop it !! Have you honestly never shared a paracetamol or an aspirin which he bought ???

AboutVattime · 18/09/2024 17:46

I'm sorry but no !! DO NOT SHARE NEEDLES .. which I'm sure you don't ! But otherwise don't stress . MN is insane with risk ... it's beyond negligible.. hope your DH found it fine ?

SilenceInside · 18/09/2024 17:50

No I've never shared my partners prescription medicine. Which is not at all the same thing as OTC painkillers bought in general for family use.

Then take back a correct dose for yourself from his pen!

Snozzlemaid · 18/09/2024 17:52

If the pen was completely empty after your dose I'm sure you have done it correctly.
Hopefully if you go up to 5mg next time you'll start feeling the effect of it again.

hoarahloux · 18/09/2024 18:33

I mean, was the pen empty? The plunger pushed to the end of the pen? You can see if there's medication left.

Cluckyyy · 18/09/2024 19:24

I didn't really look at the plunger to be honest, just jabbed it in! I'm sure it'll be fine, just don't like the "hungry" feeling as am not used to it!

MounjaroHereICome · 19/09/2024 13:40

You could simply finish off your dose from his last one as well, so you're both even on doses.

I don't think it's a 'men' thing though but I don't see it as a big deal what he did either.

it's her husband! i suspect they undertake other contaminating activities with nary a second thought

FGS. Maybe he can pay OP back when his pen arrives??? Stop creating drama.

SilenceInside · 19/09/2024 16:28

@StormingNorman never! I live for drama.

There is a huge difference between sharing body fluids and potentially injecting someone elses skin microbiome into your body, being married does not reduce the infection risk.

Amandasummers · 19/09/2024 17:08

How does one hard dose a pen?! I clearly have a dose left in mine but I don’t know how to get it out?!?

SilenceInside · 19/09/2024 17:22

@Amandasummers some people use the remaining liquid and inject it. You can either try to do a "hard twist" to force the pen to work in the same way as normal, hard enough that some people use pliers to give you an idea. Presumably, that forces the pen past a built-in physical block and allows you to inject the remaining liquid. An issue with that is you won't know exactly how much liquid remains, and so you won't know what dose you have taken. It might be more or less than the dose of the pen. The other method is to buy insulin syringes and needles to extract the remaining liquid via the red seal at the end that you normally screw a disposable needle onto. That way, you can measure the liquid amount and calculate the dose, or alter the amount you inject. The downside is that you have to self-inject with a syringe rather than the pen.

Obviously, both of those things are not the way that you are supposed to use the pen, the manufacturer and pharmacist instructions are to discard the pen once you've done 4 doses.

MounjaroHereICome · 19/09/2024 17:26

Can I ask what is the reason for that extra dose? Is there a medical or safety reason to have an extra dose in the pen that you're not supposed to use or is it incase you make a mistake with the doses you have?

SilenceInside · 19/09/2024 17:31

@MounjaroHereICome it's so you can prime the pen as necessary, to check the needle works, to remove any air bubbles and to check that the pen mechanism works. So there needs to be additional liquid for that. The amount that is used up when priming can vary, sometimes only a couple of drops come out, once I had a lot come out which surprised me!
