Mounjaro and breastfeeding

Hi, has anyone any experience of using mounjaro for weight loss whilst breastfeeding? I'm feeding my 3 year old twice a day and they are not keen to stop.

I'm feeling guilty about possible side effects but also need to do something about my rapidly increasing weight/BMI.

I think that it's more important for your three year old child to have a healthy and happy parent, so concentrate on your weight loss using MJ and stop the breastfeeding.

The advice is not to use it while breastfeeding as there is no evidence it is safe.

LoobyLous · 17/09/2024 23:02

It’s not recommended. Mounjaro suppresses appetite and I wouldn’t want to be passing an appetite suppressant through breast milk on to my child.

I'm in a similar situation. I breastfeed my just turned 3 year old and my 15 month old. I have decided to wean them so that I can start mounjaro. As a PP said, a healthy mum is important and I don't want them growing up seeing the way I eat currently as normal or healthy. I wouldn't do it while breastfeeding though. I started weaning the 3 year old this week. We have tried cutting down gradually in the past but it didn't work well so are stopping and offering other comforts instead. Once I've weaned the 3 year old I'll start with the younger one but not sure how I'll approach that yet. Once they're both weaned I'll start mounjaro.

There won't be any research as its relatively new so I'd either stop breastfeeding (easier said than done I know) or don't take it. I've actually just stopped bfing my 26 month old and it was easier than i expected!

Late to the party. Science wise the chance of it passing through breastmilk to baby is very unlikely, it’s a large molecule and even if any is passed through likely broken down in the infants GI system. Those researching have said be cautious with low birth weight, pre term babies but otherwise it’s likely absolutely fine

No one has said it’s “ absolutely fine” , the BNF says no information available hence use with caution. The drug manufacturers themselves says it’s not known if any passes into breast milk. You could argue that prescribers should consider balance of risks if prescribing to a BF mum on the basis of likelihood due to molecule size and destruction by stomach acid of the infant, but that’s not the same as “ absolutely fine”.

Hello,

interested in what the above posters decided! I’ve got exactly the same quandary with my 15 month old.

thanks x

I'm in the same boat mine is 3 half years old and I was still breastfeeding her. I've gone cold turkey atm said .mummy's boob's are poorly took my first shot today. I feel guilty but she is 3 years old have to stop soon lol

Sunnytr · 12/08/2025 19:10

I’m also in the same position with an almost 3 year old and still breastfeeding and isn’t keen to stop either, in fact she will cry/scream if she doesn’t have it at night time or after nursery. Did you take injections whilst breastfeeding or stop completely and if so how did your little one cope? Did you use anything else for a comfort for them and did it work x

WeAllHaveWings · 12/08/2025 19:56

Providers will ask if you are breastfeeding and will not prescribe as it is against the prescribing guidelines. I wouldn’t risk it.

Cheesybiscuits01 · 22/08/2025 20:00

I've just seen this sorry. I did actually stop a few months after my post. My little one was surprisingly fine with it. I felt a little sad initially but now just proud of what I achieved. Did start mounjaro too after I'd stopped.

I did loads of research when I was considering whether to stop bf or not. Breastfeeding network state more research needs to be done but it’s unlikely the mounjaro molecules can pass to breastmilk as they’re too big and if they did, it’s likely to be broken down by baby’s digestive system. There is a reason it’s injectable I guess! I found a lot of Reddit posts where women had been prescribed it pp by their GP’s in America and continued to bf no problems. I believe due to the appetite suppression women were advised it could impact their milk supply if they didn’t consume enough calories etc. So probably not advisable early in the bf journey in particular.
