Do you tell people?

Well, just that really.
There are strong opinions flying about re: these injections, with the implication that it's somehow cheating to use them.
So, I'm interested to know what you all "admit" to, re: your weight loss?
And for those who tell people what they're using, what sort of reaction do you get?
And for those who don't want to tell others (and after all, it's none of their business but people will comment) how do you explain your success after years of struggling?
I can't decide what to do, if and when I take the plunge.

I'd disagree that it's always obvious. I know many people who have yo-yoed for years. It's just here she goes again, what is she trying this time?

woulducouldushouldu · 17/09/2024 20:17

Have told no one, not even DH. He knows I struggle with my weight but would go ape shit with me even though he's complimenting me on my weight loss.

I'm just running out of excuses why I'm not hungry/don't want much and have to justify if/what I've eaten that day. The worst is when the tiredness hits me after an injection. Then I get the "if you ate more the you wouldn't be so tired"

There I've now told someone (or probably more likely 100s of people) 😉

20bloodypounds · 17/09/2024 20:28

I've not told anyone, not even dh. My body, my decision.

I lost a lot of weight 6 years ago and though I didn't discuss it much with anyone my own brain was obsessed. Firstly cutting out sugar, salt, milk, caffeine, alcohol. Followed by intermittent fasting. Followed by low carb. It was exhausting and every slight blip upwards made me anxious.

None of my restrictions were bad choices, I was eating enough and all healthy low processed foods, but still people chose to comment negatively.

I'm doing a lot of the same restrictions now, but MJ is enabling to do it with a quiet mind. So much better for me and my mental health.

My friend has an NHS prescription for diabetes but has lots of side effects. I don't think it woud help her to know I am choosing this for weight loss and have few side effects.

Sleepyquest · 17/09/2024 20:34

I haven't really told anyone because I feel like I'm cheating even though I'm not, because I am eating less and moving more. I just have less desire to eat which helps massively. It does feel like a dirty secret

PermanentTemporary · 17/09/2024 20:44

I've told my partner and have asked him to keep quiet. I'm only going to tell people 1:1 if they ask me. A friend who looks a ton healthier did say to me that's what she was doing, and that, along with gaining over recent weeks when I felt I was in a good place to lose significantly, has made me think, sod it. I'm 55, I'm obese, I've got the money, and I need to do something for my health right now. I'll worry about the theory when I'm at less risk of a stroke.

Boidont · 17/09/2024 20:48

I ended up telling my brother because the sounds my stomach was making were extraordinary and could no longer be avoided 🤣

WeGoSlow · 17/09/2024 20:52

I've lost 100lbs on Wegovy. I've only told my DH, my sister and one good friend. I regret telling the friend as she has made disapproving comments, which surprised me given her own weight loss battles.

I've been asked lots of times about how I'm losing weight and I answer truthfully that I have implemented a whole range of lifestyle practices including counting calories, eating very healthily, cutting out UPF, gym 3xweekly, walk 10-15k a day, C25k, weekly Park Run, cycling to work.

I don't mention taking Wegovy as many people are stuck in the dark ages with their outdated beliefs about obesity and weight-loss and I don't want to have to explain my decision to the uninformed and be judged for a decision I've confidently made with my GP's support. I've changed so many parts of my life to aid weight loss that I don't list all the things I do when asked and Wegovy is just one of the many things that has helped me achieve my new figure.

I've noticed a few other colleagues and acquaintances have lost a lot of weight recently and my guess is that they are using weight loss drugs too as part of their diet too.

Crysti · 17/09/2024 20:53

I’ve only told my hubby and grown up children

I cba with other people putting their two bit in tbh

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2024 21:16

I've told a few close friends. No one is noticing yet but if anyone did ask I won't hesitate to say I used MJ.

I'm pretty much an open book.

unsync · 17/09/2024 21:25

My view is that the meds switch off the chatter / compulsion. Whilst that makes it easier to stick to an eating plan, If you don't change your habits, it will go back on when you stop the meds. It's the choices you make that drive the loss.

I'm losing about 1 kg a week on 1594 calories a day. I would probably lose the same amount without the meds the difference being, the compulsion is not there. I'm also exercising a lot more than I did before. Its not the meds making me do this, I took a conscious decision to do these two things. I will continue to do these things once I reach my target weight. I have worked out why I feel the compulsion and am working on that too.

Do I tell people? Some I do if they are genuinely interested. Others, no, mainly because I can't be arsed. I don't have to justify anything I do to anyone. It's about time we all stopped judging women on appearance whatever that may be and encourage others to be healthy and happy.

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2024 21:43

@unsync I agree with you.
However I think the MJ has affected exercise for me too. It seems to be connected with the brain chatter. Now I just go to the gym happily when I can l. This is a total change of attitude. Mind you it's early days so maybe it won't last.

And being 10kg down exercise is more enjoyable too. So while it 100% a positive choice I am making, I can't help but feel somehow the MJ has something to do with it.

unsync · 17/09/2024 22:17

@RobinEllacotStrike I started going to the gym four months before I started MJ. It was the gym that kickstarted the healthy eating for me. Food was always my nemesis so I kind of reversed into it via the gym!

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2024 22:33

I'm really thrilled to be getting more into the gym. Nice side effect.

Roosnoodles · 17/09/2024 22:45

Hi was just wondering why would it be seen as cheating when having plastic surgery isn’t. Plastic surgery is just considered plastic surgery. Surely it’s just different strokes type thing as long as you feel good in the end.

PonyPatter44 · 17/09/2024 22:47

I tell people. I don't care if they judge me, that's their problem, really. I've told a few people at work who have asked about my weight loss, and they've all reacted really positively.

There'd be no point in hiding it from my DP - he's on it as well!

MelainesLaugh · 18/09/2024 07:00

I’ve told a couple of people who I know will be supportive. My parents know because my Dad is on it for diabetes and helped encourage me to just go for it. But I’m not shouting from the rooftops or putting it on FB or anything like that

HaveYouSeenRain · 18/09/2024 07:09

SilkFloss · 17/09/2024 10:51

Trouble is, I talk too much and am honest. So, having bored the pants off people in the past when I'm on a weight-loss journey, I'm sure eyebrows will be raised if I start losing loads and don't bang on about it.

Or maybe people will be relieved? Is it really that interesting for them to hear about your weight loss and dieting?
I lost two stone on Saxenda, nobody asked and I didn’t tell anyone.

Well done! You have implemented a lot of healthy changes. 100lb is very impressive

TidyDancer · 18/09/2024 09:03

I've told a couple of friends who are supportive and one is considering doing it herself. I did my research and I'm happy with my decision to be on Mounjaro so the way I see it is that I haven't told people because I'm not soliciting opinions on it.

I've only been on it a few weeks and so my weight loss isn't yet noticeable (nearly a stone so far but have a lot to lose so will be a while before anyone notices!). I'm not sure if I'll 'admit' to the injections if people ask further down the line. I may just stick to the 'healthy eating, moving more' line which actually isn't untrue. I'm just not up for the judgement that will be inevitable when I'm happy with what I'm doing.

raspberrymeringue · 18/09/2024 15:25

I think there is a misconception by many who haven't researched MJ, that you have the injection and the fat just melts off your body. Not that you still have to make lifestyle changes, exercise and watch what you eat etc.

LittleLlama · 18/09/2024 17:03

I haven’t told many people, partly because I haven’t lost enough weight for anyone to really notice but also because of the financial implications. I think some people might feel that if I had that much money spare every month I could put it to better use.

ChiliFiend · 18/09/2024 18:18

I think pretending weight loss is because of diet and exercise when it's really down to injections is really unfair on others - it creates unrealistic expectations and undoubtedly a great deal of self-loathing in people who can't meaningfully shift their weight that way. I don't know why we can't all just celebrate each other and support each other by being truthful. Its not a dirty secret.

SilenceInside · 18/09/2024 18:29

Ah excellent, another terrible thing that obese people who choose to use weight loss injections are responsible for.

SilenceInside · 18/09/2024 18:30

Also, it is because of diet and exercise. You can't sit on the sofa eating cake when taking weight loss injections. If you did, then you wouldn't lose weight.
