Does Mounjaro help with medication-induced weight gain?

Hello, I posted this in another thread on chat and there were no answers, so decided to create a proper thread for it here.

I have a question though for anyone who has an answer: For those of us who gained weight due to disability/medication and not eating/lifestyle, what does Mounjaro do? The appetite suppression thing isn't needed when you don't eat much anyway and you already exercise as much as you can given your illness. Will it help you lose weight still and how?

So for me I eat very little because I've had surgery and it still cuts my appetite and calories

I gain weight on 1000, MJ cuts my intake to 600-800 so I shift to losing

Is what you eat healthy? Because one effect of MJ is that you tend not to want to eat much junk food.

Yes I actually rarely eat junk food because of health issues. What I do eat which is very limited, I don't eat much of except occasionally.

It's why I wonder if there's any other benefit since what it does do is something I already do.

If it does cut calories of what is eaten, then that's helpful.

It doesn't reduce the calories of what you eat, it makes you feel fuller quicker and for longer. It suppresses appetite, it can feel like you've just eaten a massive Christmas dinner when you've had half a bowl of soup, and you also don't want to eat sugary, fatty, salty things.

So what it could help you with is to maintain a calorie deficit, according to your specific circumstances, whilst helping you not feel like you're starving hungry all the time.

Okay that makes sense too.

I think it might still help you. I started putting on weight after going on medication and found it very difficult to lose weight. I tried 18:6 fasting for example and couldn’t lose anything on that. On MJ I’ve been able to lose a slow and steady 1.5 lbs / week.

Is your BMI over 30 (or 27 iirc if you have a weight-related condition)? If so then I imagine you will lose weight.

MOUNtkilimanJARO · 13/09/2024 16:11

Yes currently 31 bmi. I've never been obese until my cocktail of pills. It's been 2 years now and I'm over it! Tried everything too but nothing worked.

I need to lose 4 stones to get to my normal weight. 5 stones to get to my ideal weight.

I actually lost a bit once I kicked up my exercise routine but doing that means I got into flare ups which made it impossible to do any exercise till I was 'normal' again. It's not sustainable for me to do any more than I'm already doing, hence why I'm considering Mounjaro.

I was the same BMI as you. For me personally I didn’t start really losing until month 3, while some people start losing straight away. My weight is very stubborn though because of the medication. I’ve been on it about 5 months and am down 1 dress size. You could try and send an enquiry to a doctor at one of the pharmacies that prescribe it and see what they say?

Good idea. Thanks, I'll do that.
