Mounjaro when diabetic

BrownJenkins · 23/08/2024 20:08

I applied for Mounjaro through Boots online service. I answered all questions truthfully, including taking a low dose of Metformin for diabetes. Had a message earlier to say I was being refused the Mounjaro injections due to being on diabetic medication. Apparently, anyone who's diabetic or pre-diabetic, won't be allowed the injections.
I thought Mounjaro was prescribed for diabetes.
Is anyone here on weight loss injections and diabetic?
I feel so deflated.

I thought it was ozempic (sp?) that was for diabetic patients to use? I would speak with your nurse. I understand you might be able to get it on the nhs

BrownJenkins · 23/08/2024 21:52

Thank you for your reply.
I'll check with the nurse next week.
Not sure about getting it on the NHS though.

Ozempic can be offered by your diabetic nurse as an alternative to Metformin. You must not take both together, so you must do it under the supervision of your diabetes team.

SpanielPaws · 23/08/2024 22:08

You can't combine many diabetes drugs, it's a case of one or the other. Otherwise your blood sugars can drop too low.

I'm on metformin and semaglutide tablets together.

Metformin doesn't cause hypos.

At my last type 2 diabetes review appointment I was asked if I wanted to try Mounjaro. My answer was 'Yes please!'
I've been on it a week today and I've lost 9lb.
I'm also taking dapagliflozin and have been for a year or so.

How do you find the dapagliflozin@BigBagOfElbows ? Nurse prescribed it to me at my last review but the potential side effects really put me off and I haven't taken it yet.

The only side effect I've had is needing to wee a lot more. I've just made sure I drink plenty of water.

Thank you all so much for your comments.
I have never been offered anything other than Metformin. I will definitely make an appointment with the diabetic nurse next week. My latest diabetic blood test came back at 6.4 the GP said that was good.
I know Metformin doesn't cause hypos. The Boots online doctor said she wouldn't prescribe Mounjaro as together they could cause hypos.
I'm not asking to be prescribed on the NHS, I am happy to pay.
I'll update you when I have some news.

Again, thank you.

@BrownJenkins ... I'm on Day 5 of Mounjaro, prescribed by my Community Diabetes Nurse after 3 mths on Rybelsus - suffered with vomiting and sulphur burps.
I am taking Metformin & Dapagliflozin alongside..
My blood test in May was 9.3 and currently my BMI is 29

Fedupandstressed · 24/08/2024 21:56

I started Mounjaro 6 weeks ago via my gp referral to diabetes clinic. They advised me to stop sitagliptin and reduce gliclazide to once daily. Still on dapagliflozin.

I couldn't tolerate Metformin to the point that I couldn't leave the house without the risk of accidents. Barely any issues with mounjaro though apart from the godawful itching.

BrownJenkins · 25/08/2024 15:57

Hi, all.
Just a bit of an update.
I entered my details on the "Voy" website and they have accepted me. I haven't gone any further yet as I want to speak to the nurse.
I also entered my details with "Second Nature" and they've said I qualify too.
Just wanted to share with you. Looks like there's hope after all.
@Fedupandstressed
I only take 1 metformin a day and to be honest I have forgotten to take it a few times. My levels have never gone above 9. You mention itching, is it all over or just localised? I've suffered for years with an itchy back, nearly driven me mad at times.
Many thanks.

It's localised to the injection site. Like I said though, it's only for a few days so it's tolerable.

It seems to getting better as well as it's only a 1 inch patch this time instead of the last few weeks, when it's been 3-4 inch radius.

happygertie · 26/08/2024 08:08

I went with cloud pharmacy and told them I was prescribed metformin (for PCOS) - they sent me a message explaining there is a slight risk of hypoglycaemia and what signs to look out for etc. they still prescribed me MJ however, I have decided to stop the metformin whilst I am on MJ

BrownJenkins · 26/08/2024 21:34

@happygertie that's why I want to speak to the nurse. I need as much information as possible before going ahead with the injections. I'm expecting to come off Metformin too.

Finally got an appointment, not with the nurse but with a GP who specialises in diabetes. 11th September is the earliest appointment. Receptionist asked me why I wanted an appointment with the nurse, I told her, she then decided I needed to see the GP instead.
Watch this space but don't hold your breath 😀

I had my diabetic nurse review today, and asked about Rybelsus but apparently they aren't putting patients on it who are doing "well" on Metformin because of issues with ongoing supplies in the area. Well my blood sugars may be doing well but my poor stomach isn't.... she said it may change in the next 6 months.

BrownJenkins · 12/09/2024 14:24

Saw the GP yesterday. She was very understanding of my wish to go on the weight loss injections. However, she asked if I would try Dapagliflozin first.
Apparently, if my blood sugar level had been 7 or above, she would have prescribed me in injections on the NHS.
I agreed to the Dapagliflozin, collected them from the Chemist, just haven't dared to start taking them yet. The main concern for me is diarrhoea. I'm at home this weekend so at least any sudden happenings won't be as embarrassing as if I was in company.
The GP said to continue with the Metformin too.

Any tips or advice would be very welcome. Thank you.

Hi I'm on mounjaro and on Metformin and insulin I got the mounjaro injection prescribed by diabetic nurse 😊

BrownJenkins · 20/06/2025 18:59

@Bozzy1 Hi. That is good news.
Since being on the weight loss injections, my diabetes is no more. I still have some Metformin, just in case.
Good luck 😃

@BrownJenkins thats amazing about your diabetes! How did you get on with the Dapagliflozin though? Are you still taking it? Did you have any of the issues you feared? My DM (83) has just been prescribed it, but for heart failure not diabetes. I appreciate this is different of course, I’m just trying to find out more for her about what she might expect from people who’ve experienced taking it first hand. She is prone to low blood sugar if she doesn’t eat regularly and I knowing this drug can cause that itself. Anything you might be able to share about your experience would be really appreciated, thank you. Congratulations again on giving your diabetes the boot😊

BrownJenkins · 26/07/2025 22:34

@mumoflittlemice
Hi. Sorry for late reply, have been on holiday.
I did get thrush from the Dapagliflozin and I was going to the toilet more often but that was all. I think because I'd already made up my mind to try Mounjaro, I didn't really give them a serious chance.
My only advice would be to make sure your mum drinks plenty of fluids and always has something sugary to hand.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Good luck to your mum
