Mounjaro and gallstones

KY2021 · 22/08/2024 10:15

Has anybody started Mounjaro who already has gallstones and can advise how it's going/where to get it? Most online places say speak to your GP first which I have done and she's give me the go ahead as long as it's all done properly.

TIA :)

I would try Oushk - they take a very personal approach so it wouldn't just be a blanket no.

Currently trying these now. 3rd time lucky 🫠 been rejected by Voy and Pharmacy2u so far. These are pretty local to me too so I can collect.

Just answer “no” to the gallstones question, as you’ve had the risk assessed and signed off by your GP.

Any joy?

I have a single large gallstone. I have only ever had two attacks, probably 10 years ago. Funnily enough mine had a little niggle, ie some slight sensitivity in that area, the week before I started MJ.
I have only been on 2.5mg for two weeks but so far I have not had any issues that I would put done to using MJ. I did not mention my gallstone when filling out the form, I do not recall them askig if I had existing stones come to think about it. As far as I can see the gallbladder issues they mention in the side effects would be due to extreme rapid weight loss. I think they are just covering themselves, as they should of course, but I have lived with my mostly silent stone for many years, he just grumbles now and then if I upset him. 😊

This was going to be my next option if I got refused again considering my GP is the one who has full access to my medical history and ultrasound report.

@NewLifter Yes! All approved and going to collect on Tuesday. I've been reading reviews on TrustPilot and the prescriber seems to be a specialist in Mounjaro/weight loss treatments so thank you very much for the recommendation ☺️

I love that the gallstone is a he. It seems very appropriate 😂

AHH I'm delighted. I'm going to move to them too!

Why dont you use one of the other types, Wegovy?

Everything I read claimed that Mounjaro was the most successful for weight loss so I wanted to exhaust my options with that first before exploring alternatives.

Yes, the statistics do say this, however given that you have different health needs perhaps, I would go with one of the others if it doesnt have contraindications for gallstones.
At the end of the day, the medications are extremely effective, so I would have confidence that if you went with one of the others you will still be successful.

From NHS UK
Gallstones are very common. It's estimated more than 1 in every 10 adults in the UK has gallstones, although only a minority of people develop symptoms.
You're more at risk of developing gallstones if you're:

  • overweight or obese
  • female (particularly if you have had children)
  • 40 or over (the risk increases as you get older)

I think it would be fair to assume, given the above info, that quite a lot of people who are using weight loss injections have gallstones, they are just not aware that they do.

KY2021 · 25/08/2024 20:30

@soupfiend I've been approved now so will see how I go but will definitely keep the others in mind, thank you.

My GP said exactly the same. She said she thinks those that really suffer with them as a side effect will almost 100% have already had them but now they've been exacerbated. I could well have had mine for a long time but I only started with attacks a few months after giving birth almost a year ago.

If you have gallstones you need to have your gallbladder removed. Don’t be fobbed off by the NHS. There is no cure / treatment for symptomatic gallstones other than gallbladder removal.

I had my first gallstone 6 months after starting Wegovy. My second 6 months later and immediately had my gallbladder removed. It was the simplest op with minimal recovery time and no pain at all.

This bears repeating on every thread about WLS or injections, or any weight loss programme which a lot of people are judgemental about or sneery about

All you hear is tons of posters saying 'you'll get gallstones'.

Weight loss in and of itself doesnt cause gallstones, it might make them niggle and grumble if they are already there. Most overweight women are likely to have them already but then get diagnosed after WLS or lots of weight loss.

This happened to me, theres no way I didnt already have those stones prior to my WLS

This is good to hear! I've been referred to have mine removed and based on my ultrasound my GP thinks I've caught it "early" so it should all be pretty straightforward 🤞
