Avoid potatoes on MJ

This came as a surprise to me 🙈

Wondering if I'm the only one who didn't realise?

Certain foods can hinder your progress by causing spikes in blood sugar or by not aligning with healthy eating practices.

Here’s a list of foods to limit or avoid:

High Glycaemic Fruits and Vegetables: Avoid pineapple, watermelon, mango, overripe bananas, potatoes, and sweetcorn.

High Sugar Foods: Stay away from sweets, biscuits, cakes, and fizzy drinks. These can disrupt your blood sugar management.

Fried Foods: Foods like burgers, sausages, fried eggs, chips, and bacon are often high in unhealthy fats and can cause nausea or discomfort when taking Mounjaro.

If you limit or avoid most of those things you'd lose weight anyway

RaininSummer · 06/08/2024 13:01

If doing that I think that a person would naturally lose weight.

NewMJ · 06/08/2024 13:11

I agree with you both @Willsean & @RaininSummer

I added a baked potato to my diet on two separate days last week and only lost 0.5kg, have "normally" been losing nearly 2kg per week.

Could certainly be coincidental.

I wonder if that's carbs and water weight?

thursdaymurderclub · 06/08/2024 13:14

ive eaten a baked potatoe probably nearly every dsy since october.. and lost nearly 4 stone now!

most of that list is obvious things to avoid anyway?

i do find that dehydration affects the loss, so have tried to increase my water intake and i do admit to being addicted to diet pop! so trying to reduce that

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/08/2024 13:44

I have a fried egg (fried in olive oil) on sourdough toast every morning for breakfast. Zero side effects. Actually approved by a qualified nutritionist (and sports scientist) that it's a healthy breakfast.

Interesting, thanks for the link.
Oddly, (on MJ) I am perturbed to have lost nothing in the past 10 days despite hugely increasing my activity levels and eating ultra healthily mostly below 1000 calories…
(Probably not enough calorie intake for the exercise I was doing tbh)

But my meals have included peaches/nectarines every day - and I see via the Myfitnesspal app that it has surprisingly taken me over the daily sugar limit…

Carelesswispalover · 06/08/2024 13:56

I've lost nearly 3 stone since start of May and I haven't cut out any carbs, I just eat them in moderation now whereas before I would have binged.
Look up Nathan Joseph on Instagram, he rightly says that you have to be able to maintain this for the rest of your life, so don't make anything forbidden, because you will binge.
I have a chocolate biscuit with my cup of tea every night, if I fancy a takeaway (which actually i don't that much) I have it.
Mounjaro has taught me not to abuse food, but I still get to eat what I want.

daffodilandtulip · 06/08/2024 14:10

I've eaten watermelon, mango, bananas, potatoes, and sweetcorn most days and lost 19lb in 7 weeks. I imagine it's more the sugar and fat foods that you need to avoid.

Menora · 06/08/2024 15:15

There is a scientific reason for the scale change. Each gram of carb holds 3-4 gram of water. It’s not fat. Potatoes do not cause gain of fat on their own independently as part of a balanced diet. If you add things to the potatoes like cheese and butter this increases the calories. I’ve lost weight eating potatoes I just don’t eat an excessive amount or add extra calories to them that I don’t count. Food is not ‘good vs bad’ I lost weight still eating the odd biscuit or ice cream. I just didn’t eat them every day or in large portions and they formed part of a balanced calorie controlled diet. It’s best not to demonise food. Obviously very processed foods are best avoided in frequent quantities but it’s hard to avoid everything and live a normal life

SettingsOptions · 06/08/2024 15:19

Hmmm I think naturally it makes sense to avoid the high sugar list and the fried food list for weight loss.

I can’t lie though, I’d definitely eat pineapple, watermelon, sweetcorn and mango from the High Glycaemic Fruits and Vegetables list! I think I’ve read that bananas aren’t that healthy; and potatoes make sense because they’re a carb and often processed into chips which could make them less healthy. But the rest is a surprise to me.

I had 3 baked potatoes last week and lost 3lbs 🤷‍♀️

(more than I would have usually, I am playing with my new air fryer)

Cutting out staple items that are not "unhealthy" in a balanced diet is not sustainable.

Speedweed · 06/08/2024 16:15

"Cutting out staple items that are not "unhealthy" in a balanced diet is not sustainable."

This. There's no point cutting out any staples - bread, pasta, potatoes, fruit, otherwise it's a diet that's going to fail eventually.

Personally, I'm finding digesting cheap oil difficult (eg takeaway fish and chips, evenif I only eata tiny tiny portion ), and too much fructose is a disaster (too much being a single apple on an empty stomach, for example). Tomato based sauces seem to be an issue too, rather than the pasta they are with. But I'm not cutting any of it out, just eating less of it.

SettingsOptions · 06/08/2024 16:23

I think it depends on the person.

For example I’m 5ft and I easily put weight on with carbs so I feel like cutting those out would help me sustain weight loss without MJ. As I’m short, my daily BMR calories are quite low (1200 - it will be less than that with weight loss)

It’s completely possible that someone taller with more calories to play around with before weight gain, may tolerate carbs better so it’s more sustainable for them to have the balance. But for me, I think I’d cut back in an ideal world. I can’t lie though, the fruit on OP’s list was a shocker!
