If you have significant weight loss and excess skin, I think surgery is the only answer. I can't imagine even the best collagen supplement is going to tighten up inches of loose skin.

Collagen supplements are a waste of money.

You’re likely to get the same benefits (if any) from a healthy diet, rich in protein.

Thank you. It’s more preventative than restorative I’m looking for

I am using Wild Collagen from Ancient and Brave. I have no idea if it's doing anything but feel that I want to do everything I can to preserve my skin (there's going to be a lot!). I’m actually most worried about my face and neck becoming saggy and wrinkled (I'm 57) so will do all in my power to help prevent that from happening 🙂

I've been taking this with the hope it helps with loose skin, even if it is a little.

It gives you protein as well, so helps hit my daily protein goal.

I have a couple of scoops each day with a Nescafé mocha sachet and can't taste it at all

I asked one of the team who supply my medication and they advised that any collagen you use needs to be 'hydrolysed' for it to be worth buying.

Don't fall for the absolute collagen trap. I have 6 months in a Cupboard and it is YACK

soupfiend · 05/08/2024 19:42

Collagen is recommended by physios for supporting bone density as you age, just as important as taking your calcium and vit d

However it wont 'tighten' loose skin, it started making my skin a bit softer when I started using it but nothing will stop or get rid of loose skin if thats how your skin will be after weight loss (like mine)

Dress to cover it over and be happy that your health is much imrpoved by the loss.

Theoretically too high an intake of amino acids from sources such as collagen and other protein sources could make loose skin worse. High protein intake inhibits autophagy the process by which the body clears out cellular waste and recycles old proteins in the body. When your diet is abundant in protein this process switches off and switches to a growth cycle which boosts muscle growth. Now obviously we need this phase to build and maintain muscle but popping collagen all day and necking protein daily in the form of shakes, bars and meat or dairy means your body doesn’t get a chance to switch into that waste removal and recycle mode of autophagy.

These seems to be growing consensus that autophagy may help to reduce or shrink back loose skin because in autophagy old misfolded and damages proteins are removed and recycled by the body. Many high protein diets will advices use of periodic fasting to trigger autophagy and some even mention this has benefits for shrinking loose skin as it promotes the remodelling of the skin.

Another option is to focus on more plant based proteins like beans, pulses, tofu and essentially all plants contain protein to some degree but they contain far less of the specific amount acids which trigger the growth pathway than animal based proteins and so they do not inhibit autophagy to the same extent.

This is just some extra info, for what it’s worth I eat both animal based and plant based diet myself so I’m not trying to persuade anyone of anything this is just some additional perspective.

As for collagen powder? If your diet is extremely deficient in protein then you may get some benefit from taking it but the body will break down all the peptides to their amino acids just as it would if you age cottage cheese, tofu or a lamb steak. Most of the studies done on collagen powders were funded by the manufacturers and don’t state the other protein content of the participants diets nor were the tests done in comparison to say a protein shake or a normal protein containing diet. What you take in collagen powder was previously a worthless waste procduct which is now a multimillion dollar industry, which is impressive marketing if you ask me. Getting your protein from real food with a range of other micronutrients is probably better than powdered waste products.
